Country Walking 1000 Mile Challenge 2016
« on: 19:18:53, 27/12/15 »
This was something Castaway has been doing this year and will also be doing in 2016. Needing some motivation for the New Year I decided to give it a go too. Since then Mr Summit and Shaun have also signed up, so figured that warranted a thread for discussion, support and record keeping.

Problem was, where to put it. This seemed the most logical place, even though it's not actually an LDW. However, Admins, feel free to relocate it if you think best :)

I'll be out for the first time (for a 'proper walk' on January 7th :) After that I'm aiming to be out at least one day a week where possible.

CW are also aware that a bunch of us here are doing this and have asked (and been given) a link to this thread.

I have a 12 mile walk planned on the 10 Jan but will definitely start recording the mileage before then.
Back to work on the 4th  so, as long as it isn't raining, I will be walking instead of bus and tube and in addition  the dog always needs walking :)

I have last month's CW and won't forget the Feb edition. I have been meaning to sign up to get it delivered but never get round to it

as a CW subscriber, I usually get the magazine a few days before it goes into the shops and it comes out just a few days after Trail magazine. I got Trail magazine on Christmas Eve so am hoping CW magazine will be delivered in the next few days.

I had already signed up so add me to the list.

They also had free Pedometres last year, not sure if this will be happening next year.

I looked at this last night, and thought it was a great idea.
Then I thought about it in relation to the walk I did yesterday, when we walked for 5 hours on saturated rough ground, through heather and bogs and peat hags, lots of up and down though we never reached 1000 feet, quite a chunk of it against a biting wind.  When I measured it on a map we had done less than 8 miles, though I was as tired as if I had done at least twice that.
I had visions of doing easy road walks at the end of the month to get my mileage up, even though I had expended far more than the required effort.  Still, it might be a way of making me go out and do a mile or so on a day like today when it's blowing a gale, and I could curl up in front of the woodburner with my Xmas books.  I'll have a think.

I totally get what you mean here. Ten miles some days will be many many times harder than ten miles another day. Over the course of the year I expect to me walking a fair mix of terrain and ascents (or lack thereof) so hopefully it will average out a bit.

I've signed up. Can you log all walking ie daily walking to work etc or just proper organised walks?

Good luck everyone

As far as I can tell, you walk 1000 miles in a year and it doesn't much matter how or where.

Personally I'm not counting my normal daily meanderings (such as around the house or at work) but if, for example, I walk to village shop and back (a mile round trip) I'll log that. So certainly walking to work should count (IMHO).

For myself though, I'm looking to get 1000 miles above and beyond whatever walking I am required to do in order to carry out my day to day existence.
