Good base North York moors, no car
« on: 11:00:49, 05/10/18 »
Hi
Can anyone recommend a good town/village as a base for a weekend walking in North York with no car. Preferably with easy public transport links to York.
Thanks

I would take a look at the Esk Valley walk and pick a town along there. I recently did it and used the train service to get around.

I'll throw in Malton or Pickering.  Both are lovely little market towns and have good public transport services to York and the North York. Moors.

Agree with Mel, plus - possibly Helmsley or Thornton le Dale.
The latter is on the 'Yorkshire Coastliner' bus route with easy links to the coast & York and is nestled right at the foot of the NY Moors.
Only a hill but all of life to me, up there between the sunset and the sea.

I would recommend Rosedale Abbey, right in the heart of the North York Moors.

Spent an Easter weekend there many years ago; loads of good walking around.

Whitby, plenty of choices for accommodation & transport with lots of scenic routes nearby. but there again, I may be prejudiced. ;)
Retirement is like owning an old car, you must get as many miles as you can from it before it breaks down forever.
