TR - More Muddy than Mel's Meanderings
« on: 16:04:21, 31/12/20 »
31/12/2020 and I decided to get out for a last walk of the year.
This year I've done more walking than any other but most of it has been one of 3 loops from our house. I decided to do the shortest one again today and anyone who read my reports earlier in the year will see things that they recognise but now colder and muddier.

It was a bitterly cold morning and I wrapped up against the elements.
I've walked past these hedgerows when they were white with hawthorn blossom but now it is haw frost

The lake was frozen in Trent Park country park

The obolisque

It feels like ages since these bleak fields were bright with rape

Firs Wood was a bit damp I was caught between the very opposite of a rock and a hard place. In the end I, with difficulty, negotiated the rusty barbed wire fence to get to the slightly drier ground to my left. 2 kids is enough.

The tunnel hedge as I think Mel called it in one of my trip reports in the spring.

A lot of the paths heading back are hemmed in by two hedges or hedges and fences so there is no where to go but straight through the mud.

About 11 miles and my new boots have been well and truly christened.

Ha ha, that looks a hippos paradise!  Think I would have turned round at the tunnel path.   ;D

Happy new muddy year.

That would have made it a very long walk.

The mud with me was frozen first thing but as the morning went on, and more people walked about, it got worse and worse.

Happy New Year to you both too.

Good mud. Just back from an 8-9 miler, didn't take pics but frozen solid. No mud. Like going back in time to cold winters.

Thanks Mel
No autumn pics of the tunnel. We were a bit less locked down then so I ventured further afield including, for a few, brief, walk-interfering weeks, to work.

Boots all cleaned and put away.

You call that mud ? Yes indeed it is..Great report , and that bit about being hemmed into the mud..so true at times.
If ever we do have a heat wave I reckon all this will be missed.. :crazy2:

Those paths reminds me of The Hippopotamus Song by Flanders and Swann with its chorus line of "Mud, mud, glorious mud" sung many a time when ecountering Essex mud.

It's not so much a walk but a slip, slide and slither excursion

These boots are made for walking.... so long as the rest of my body agrees

I was a bit obsessed with an old Flanders and Swan record that my parents had when I was a kid, I think I probably still know all the words to the Hippopotamus Song

'A bold hippopotamus was standing one day on the banks of the cool Shalimar'.... etc.

More of a wallow than a walk! Surprising really - I would have expected the recent frosts to have frozen the ground; they certainly have here in the South Lakes.

PS - impressive alliteration, by the way.  :)

Though it was a frosty morning when I went for the walk we've actually not had it that cold down here.
If we do have a cold snap it is going to come as a nasty shock to the tulips, daffodils and irises which are well up in our garden.
