Footwear philosophy

I've always walked in boots but last year bought a pair of Merrell shoes with mesh side panels - fantastic! I'd never go back to the weight of even fabric boots again but obviously they have drawbacks in the rain or on boggy ground. Is this neccessarily a problem though? Apart from winter walking when it's cold does it really matter if we walk with wet feet (providing of course we take care of them and wash and dry them whenever possible) on extended walking trips. Also, is it worth having the G-tex lined version or would this just make them harder to dry out once water has run over the low cut uppers or defeat the object of having mesh panels re. ventilation?
