Title: Viewranger's 2017 Walking Challenge
Post by: Mel on 14:14:55, 27/12/16
Riding on the back of the Country Walking 1000 mile challenge, Viewranger are doing something similar (http://my.viewranger.com/challenges/walk2017), with a choice of 250, 500, 1000 and 1500 mile challenges.

They admit they were inspired by Country Walking's Walk 1000 miles after reading someone's blog who used Viewranger to log and keep track of their distances.

All you need to do is sign up to your chosen challenge, track record every walk you do using VR and the app/site does the rest, including adding you to a leaderboard.

Might be of interest for anyone who wants a goal for 2017 but feels 1000 miles is beyond them  :)

... And no, you can't take 12 devices with you and track 1 walk on them for the mileage to be multiplied by 12  :D   ;D

I've just got in from todays walk and uploaded the track to Viewranger as usual to find that during 2016 I've accumulated almost 961kms. I am particularly miffed as there have been a few walks that I failed to record and I'm unlikely to clock up a further 40kms before Sunday.

But isn't the 'challenge' miles, not km. No matter, you have done an awful lot more than many on here (including me ::)).

I don't know, I wasn't even aware of the 'challenge'. Doubt whether I could chalk up 1000 miles in a year.

I 'signed up' for the easiest Viewranger  challenge (250 miles equals approx 400km), recording only when I went out for a proper walk, and I've just realised I am not going to achieve even that apparently easy goal :-[ .  Only 4 more days and I am still 60km short and I won't find time for a walk of any length before Jan 1st...  My Fitbit (OK I'm a saddo) tells me I have walked a total of 3,120 km in 2016 so if I had recorded every shuffling step I would have easily achieved the VR challenge. This leads me on to a New Year resolution.  In 2017 I will try to do more genuine and enjoyable 'proper walks' and less aimless shuffling around!

Happy New Year!

I'd be out a walk 40km at once.. Couldn't miss a target by such a small amount while there was still day light and breath in my body. O0

Well done either way.

How does the technology work?  I still write my walks down on a spread sheet.  Even the lunch time ones.  Every mile counts.

Don't know if this pic will work but my (recorded) mileage this year is pathetic  ;D

Having said that, similar to Glyno and JohnWalker, I've not recorded every single walk I did, such as walks to the shops or round the block leg stretches, or even regular local walks.  I think over the course of a year all those "little" walks would add up to quite a bit to be honest  :)

BuzyG - You create an account on Viewranger (free).  You load the (free) app onto your phone.  Then sign up to the mileage challenge of your choosing (free).

Then every time you go for a walk you "record track" on your phone and save it when you've finished.  Then "synchronise" it for it to register on the challenge page  :)

I think I'm going for the 250 miles challenge so I don't over-face myself (or wreck my tendon again).  It'll encourage me to get out little and often I think rather than mega-yomps that leave me in pain (that pesky tendon again) during the walk and two or three days after.

Thanks Mel.  I will give this some consideration.  I log all walks on Dartmoor on the OS App.  Then add those to my spread sheet with other walks.  Still don't get how it knows where you have been walking if you spend a good deal of time out of phone signal range most walks I go on there is no phone signal for long stretches.

It will use the GPS receiver in your phone (doesn't need a phone network or data signal)  O0

Post by: DevonDave on 18:52:49, 27/12/16
Perhaps I'm in a minority, but I don't really see the point in trying to achieve a set number of miles in a year.  I go out for a walk whenever I feel like it, but there are days when either I don't feel like it or I have something else that needs doing, and I wouldn't want to feel that I had to go walking just to keep the mileage up.  I think in that case walking could become a chore and I would lose the enjoyment.

Post by: Glyno on 19:35:16, 27/12/16
I think the clue is in the word... challenge.
Title: Re: Viewranger's 2017 Walking Challenge
Post by: ninthace on 19:59:55, 27/12/16
I'm with DevonDave. I am not motivated by mileage or hill bagging although I do record both.  I publish new walks on haroldstreet.org and on gpsies.com so other people can enjoy them. The former automatically hill bags for you as a quid pro quo for publishing it  and both give distances.  I keep track of our mileage and ascent as part of a diary spreadsheet where I log each walk for my own interest. I also have all the walks I have done since I got a gps in a Memorymap file.  It's fun on the long winter evenings to look back on past trips.
I only bag hills that get in the way so for example I do not have a full set of Wainwrights, some haven't been on the route yet and some aren't worth it IMHO.
Good luck to those doing the Viewranger challenge though - if that is what floats your boat go to it but don't let it ruin your love of walking by making walking a chore.
Title: Re: Viewranger's 2017 Walking Challenge
Post by: Mel on 12:33:24, 29/12/16
I think, for some people, things like this provide the incentive to get out for a walk and not necessarily something to aim for.  If I wanted a challenge I'd go for the 1000 mile option.  I don't, I just want some incentive and motivation to get off my backside, so I'm plumping for the 250 mile option  :)

.... given that I only did 100 miles this year, even that's not looking likely  :D  ;D

Title: Re: Viewranger's 2017 Walking Challenge
Post by: Glyno on 16:08:57, 29/12/16
I too, am not motivated by mileage or hillbagging (which is why my signature has been 213/214 for many years ;)). I am motivated by my love of the great outdoors. Seeing just how far I've walked in a calendar year is largely irrelevant, but of interest just the same.

When I was a keen cyclist many years ago Cycling magazine used to print a mileage chart as part of the cover of the first issue of each years.  Might still have some buried at the back of a cupboard.  Slightly bemused to think I usually topped the10,000 miles mark every year.  Really do not think of miles now just the pleasure which can not be measured in that way.  And how do you compare the miles along local trails with those over the mountains?
Title: Re: Viewranger's 2017 Walking Challenge
Post by: Mel on 20:39:01, 16/01/17
Just resurrecting this topic .... I'm off the starting blocks and have done 18 miles already  :)

I've decided I'm aiming for one mile per day .... which could equate to one mile per day or sit and do nowt all week and then 7 miles on a weekend.  Either option is achievable for me so I'm happy with that  :)

... And yes, I know one mile per day is going to add up to more than the 250 miles I've signed up for  ;D

Altirando, you are right, you can't compare miles over local trails with those over mountains.  This little challenge isn't about comparing miles, it's the incentive to get me out and actually DO some miles - I'll appreciate every one of them, be they short local mooches or tougher, longer days out in the hills.

Mebby  :-\   I'm still not having the motivation to get out onto hills though.  This mileage is purely from short, local, out-of-the-door walks of around 1 to 2 miles each (so in that respect it's pretty good going  :) )

I need to get some ascents back into my legs or else Moel Eilio is gonna kill me  ;D

I've only got 12.5 miles to go to reach my Viewranger 250 mile challenge goal  :)   Then after that I'll be aiming to carry on for my own home-made challenge of 365 miles in 365 days by the end of the year  :)

This subject came up during our lunch stop at Fur Tor yesterday.

The theme for the walk was Operation Market Garden, it being the 17th of September.

I mentioned that I had stopped chasing the 1000 miles a year target, I had set myself, having injured my groin doing so  and was now focusing on one or two decent walks per week, rather than the 3 miles every day, mainly on hard pavement, plus one on Sunday regime, that chasing the miles had created.

Another member of our group mentioned that she had totted up around 2500 miles in the past 12 months, but being retired she had more time, as a way of trying to make me feel better. LoL

We then started talking about Arnhem and Operation Market Garden and our walk leader, asked if any of the group was alive in 1944.  Turns out there was just one of the group around back ithen.  Yes you guest it.  She walks 2500 miles a year and has my total respect.  O0

Post by: Mel on 18:48:20, 19/09/17
If only I had the time to clock up 3,000 miles ;D   Roll on retirement  :-X   I think that's why I've shied away from the 1,000 mile challenges.... the focus would turn from just getting out and enjoying a mile or two a night with a longer one at the weekend if I feel like it (or don't have other commitments) to Must. Go. For. A. Walk. Every. Day. Come. Rain. Or. Shine. Or. Else. I'll. Fail.  Having that pressure on myself would take the pleasure out of the pastime for me I think.

Well done, Mel. I'm attempting the 250 mile Viewranger challenge and I still have 25 miles to go.  Should manage to complete it this year although I failed last year  :-[ .  But how do these (elderly) superwalkers manage 2500 miles  :o  . I'm chastened! (but a realist).

My sympathies Mel
Despite a complicated house move in August which got in the way of a lot of walking for 3 months and a knee injury in September it hasn’t been a bad year. Exactly 100 walks logged this year. Mrs N has managed 603 miles which is a personal best and I have done 713.
Hopefully, we will walk more next year; 10 days walking in Austria already booked for starters and, having given Exmoor and the SWCP a good seeing to since September, Dartmoor and Cornish SWCP is in the sights for 2018.

With just one day to go I've completed the ViewRanger 400 km challenge (it sounds better than 250 miles, don't you think?) :) .  It's pretty pathetic really as I reached 350 km back in September but so many things got in the way of walking. I had been trying only to log new walks but the holiday has made it difficult to get away (too much eating and drinking and not enough public transport) so I had to repeat a local Thames and parks walk (http://greenlives.org.uk/Historic_Twickenham.html) to reach my target today, just in time. ???
Must try harder in 2018....

Bri, you noticed  :o   ... and there was me thinking I was being discrete  ;D

It's kakkapants isn't it Jac    >:(   I think coughs should be on the Banned List.  I've not heard of feeling "viddy" before?  Autocorrect gone wrong? Or is it a local word?

Ninthace, your idea of "not a lot of walking" sounds like my idea of "a heck of a lot of walking"  :D   Well done for Mrs N on beating her PB  O0

Well done John Walker  O0   If I only logged my "proper walks" I'd be nowhere near 250 miles by now.  I logged everything ... and I mean EVERYTHING so I can't even quietly sit and think "oh, if I'd logged all my walks I'd have done it"  :(

I notice the VR Walking Challenges are back again for 2018 so I'm gonna give the 250 miles challenge another go, along with my own personal 365 challenge again.

In the meantime, here's something for the stat geeks amongst you to have a laugh at:

I did 338.97 miles in 182 walks. 83 of those were a mile long or less and were "functional" walks, eg. to/from the shops or job number 2 (see John Walker, they do add up so it's worth counting them!).
The majority of my walks were "out of the door" plods (hence, why people might only be able to see "private track" on the VR site).
My longest walk was 11.42 miles on a lovely sunny day in the Yorkshire Dales.
My total height climbed was 24,081ft.  The biggest height gain in one walk was 2,500ft on the "not quite Moel Eilio" forum meet back in March.
I spent a total of roughly 7.5 days walking.
My average speed was 1.84mph which, to be honest, is faster than I thought it would be.

So there you have it folks and folkesses.  That's me signing out of the VR 2017 Walking Challenge.  Thank you all for your support each time I resurrected this topic, it has been very much appreciated  :)
