Title: TR Souther Fell from Mungrisdale Sat 12 Sep 20
Post by: April on 19:04:43, 15/09/20
Day walks again for us because the wind was forecast strong and increasing overnight, gale force at height. Not wild camping weather  :( We drove to Mungrisdale and parked in the village hall car park, paid our £2 and set off up the valley next to the River Glenderamackin. We were doing a new AW for Squeaky, Souther Fell.

The riverside path is washed away in places
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50342415581_7fa87bdef1_z.jpg) (http://)

One part of the path has been diverted over big stone slabs where there is little left of the riverbank path. There is still a short part of the route where you have to walk along stones in the river and care has to be taken on the bit in the photo above.

On easier ground

The path was very wet and boggy, wetter and boggier than I can remember here. We thought we might put this route on the banned list but thought that was too harsh. We opted instead to put it on the Only to be used if there is no alternate route list.

Bannerdale Beck

We reached Bannerdale Beck at the ford. There was a lot of water coming down the beck so we walked upstream to see if there was an easier place to cross. We crossed the beck just above centre of this shot above.

We stopped for some lunch beside the bridge. It was mostly out of the blustery wind that had been in our faces most of the way.

Lunch over we crossed the fb and made our way up to Mousthwaite Col.

There were a few spots of rain here but it didn't amount to much.

We got a few brief spells of sunshine that lit up parts of the surrounding fells.

On Souther Fell summit

The wind was strong here so we didn't linger long

We descended in a northeasterly direction to pick up the path that leads to Low Beckside. A mistake because we came to a big patch of bracken and we had to descend steeply through it to reach the path. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, a southerly route to reach the path would have been longer but with less bracken.

On the way down to Mungrisdale

We were pleased to reach the path and we enjoyed the last bit of the walk with a bit of sunshine now and again.

Our walk was Mungrisdale - River Glenderamackin - fb - Mousthwaite Col - Souther Fell - Low Beckside - Mungrisdale. 4.85 miles and 356m ascent.

Lovely pics, Souther is a great place for views of Blencathra.
Like the shot of Sharp Edge just teasing you with a quick peak like a burlesque performer with her fans.

Another lovely walk that one April O0
The Glenderamackin valley is another of those "only a mile from the road but could be in the middle of nowhere" type place

It is a nice valley just wish it wasn't as wet, muddy and boggy  :)

Great photos, April. I love the Glernderamakin valley - and I love the name. Sharp Edge does look ... sharp (never been up it).

I particularly like the forum during the early part of the week, wondering where you, Beefy and squeaky have been over the weekend. Same applies to other regular contributors.  :)

You shouldnt feed a pig leftover dogfood.
I am reporting you to the pig protection society (their motto: justice for piggies).

Yes - Glenderamackin is a gem of a spot - so secluded in its atmosphere. Lovel walk and photos as usual April. Interested in your route off Souther - we have always walked to the end and then had to go back on ourselves because there is no direct right of way through. It's only when someone else does something different that I spotted other paths on the map - although as you discovered they are not always that visible on the ground. hope you checked for ticks... :o

No ticks  :)  The path up the side of the fell from Low Beckside that is shown on the map is visible; it is the route to it from the summit that is pathless and it would have been easy out of bracken season.

We've walked that path from the bottom up with no problems but, as April says, it peters out towards the top. This is fine in ascent but I can see why finding it from the summit may be tricky.

It has come to my attention that a pig has been fed dogfood. This is a very serious issue.
If caught the perpetrators will be sent on a pig awareness course, involving having to dress and live as pigs for a few days.
I hope this will serve as a warning to all. Pigs have rights too.

This is not a laughing matter. Bailiffs will be sent if needs be, they will be in pork physical condition.

I think someone's telling porkies..  ::)

AAaaanyway, I enjoyed reading/looking at that.  I seem to think I've walked part of your route as a Blencathra circuit at some point and the beckside path was a bit dodgy then (before Storm Desmond I believe it was) - that view of Sharp Edge looks like someone's taken a bite out of it  ;D

You want to be careful Mel you could be in trouble with the militant wing of the Pig Protection Society.
They are the Porcine Liberation & Emancipation Brotherhood, though they are usually known by their acronym.
