It is nearly that time of year when I spend hours looking at red dots barely moving on a map.
Looking at the competitors list it would appear that neither of last years winners, Pavel Paloncy and Carol Morgan, are competing this year.
-
Looking forward to it too, starting my packing now as I'll be heading up on 13th to join the safety teams O0
-
Sorry that I will be missing the dots this year and the company on this site as I'll be sunning myself in Lanzarote!
-
Hoping to catch the guys and girls doing the spine somewhere(dont no yet) around dinner time on the sunday, would have gone to the start again but double booked sat night, argh. I'm bound to get into trouble at work thru dot watching on my phone, so addictive!! Hoping sussamb will take plenty of videos/pictures to show us mortals how amazing this experience is!! O0

I've got a really full on week at work, don't know how much chance I'll get to dot-watch during the day this year.
Yes, looking forward to posts from our inside reporter.
-
I'll try to post whenever I can but will depend on how busy we are O0
-
Sussamb - hope you enjoy being part of the safety team, and you don’t have too much to do!
Dot watching is going to prove difficult for me at work too this year - we have someone new starting in the office that week and I’m training them up >:(
-
I'll try to post whenever I can but will depend on how busy we are O0
Any idea where you will be going and what your duties will be??
We wont be expecting live reports, just already cant wait to read your trip report and experiences!! O0
-
An idea only at this stage, I'm not arriving until Sunday evening so should join the team around Hawes. After that it could be anything, route sweeping, providing support at road crossings, manning the various huts, responding to 'man down' requests etc

Thanks for the link, s.
I will be watching with interest.

If you've not watched it before Richard then don't start, it is completely addictive.
-
Ridge is right, once you start watching you can’t stop ;D
It’ll be the first thing you do when you wake up and the last thing you do before going to sleep (and be prepared for some late nights!)
-
Now you've really got me hooked!
-

Probably a solo night shift on top of Shunner in freezing rain and fog. ;)
-
Just been looking at the results for 2018 - incredible that the Pennine Way can be completed in less than 5 days. And in winter.
And there are an awful lot of 'DNF's :o
-
Probably a solo night shift on top of Shunner in freezing rain and fog. ;)
Now that would really be drawing the short straw!
-
It means so much more when you have walked it remembering how long it took you to walk a particular stretch in the sun against how long it takes them in winter in the dark/cold/rain/snow/lack of sleep etc!
-

;D
I've been in worse O0

In 2016 Eoin Keith completed the race in 3 days 21 hours. This was a January with very mild, almost late Spring like conditions. Each years race is different due to the varying weather conditions. The race in 2017 was rough, mainly due to a lot of water and melting snow on the course.

I've been in worse O0
So have I but I was getting paid!

Me too O0

They are incredible athletes, I watch in total awe each year. I am ready to dot watch :)
As Ridge mentions it is very addictive ;)
-
Just received the latest deployment plan for the safety teams. Dave Lee aka Slogger will also be there, many here will know of his exploits and his past participation in the race O0
-
Wondered if he might be volunteering as his name wasn’t on the start list!

"Looking at the competitors list it would appear that neither of last years winners, Pavel Paloncy and Carol Morgan, are competing this year".
Pavel isn't there this year, Ridge, but Carol is running in the Challenger as is last year's long time full Spine leader Jim Mann, and last year's Challenger 1st and 2nd.
A great set of women in the 'big' Spine though including Jasmin Paris and Shelli Gordon. Two previous winners in the men with Eoin Keith and Eugeni as well as last year's 3rd, John Knapp. No big dumps of snow like last year yet forecast like last year, but there's time :)
I'm having a go at a completion in the "Baby Spine". I'm number 343.
-
Hi,
Time flies :D
Looking forward to watching the dot, plus seeing the competitors coming through my neck of the woods. Although it seems as though Eoin might have to take it easy this year! Unless someone will test the man. ;D
-
The weather looks unseasonably warm for sunday, could be into double figures. Long range forecast don't look too bad either so conditions underfoot should be perfect. I wonder if we could see records broken, esp in the challenger what with jim mann and wouter houtzing going guns blazing, it'll be like a sprint race! ;D . Can't see anyone beating Eoin. Will be interesting to see if Eugeni sets off like a man possessed or if he tries to stick with Eoin. Hoping to see everyone at some point on sunday and then monday/tuesday until they get too far north!!
-
Yes, I was hoping for snow but looking unlikely except possibly end of week
-
Yes, I was hoping for snow but looking unlikely except possibly end of week
Not me! Give 'em a chance.
Hope you are not needed as a backup and no competitors are injured. Although an experience for you anyway.
-
Pavel isn't there this year
I wonder why he isn't doing it this year? He will be missed :(
I'm having a go at a completion in the "Baby Spine". I'm number 343.
Good luck DinoF O0

Yes good luck, always good to have a dot number to follow!
-

With 40 mph winds at lower levels. On the tops it could be far stronger.
Good luck DinoF O0
-
Ready for this years dot watching.
I'm having a go at a completion in the "Baby Spine". I'm number 343.
Good luck DinoF. To quote an old saying but also relevant to all walkers
May the road rise to meet you, May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face.
-
Challenger just about to get underway, looking at the live feed it sounds and looks windy :)
-
Hooked already and have had the 1st nag from the wife, ha. Does anyone know what app what the spine race uses for the live tracking maps?? the detail is mega and i would love to get that or something similar for my phone!! O0
-
Wow, last year in the spine jim mann went past me at hern clough at abt 2h15 into the race! Looks like he's going to blitz that time, i no its the shorter challenge but no mean feat.
-
Jim's at Crowden after 2 and a half hours, he's flying!!
-
I was having lunch on day 2 just south of where he is now! And I thought I was doing so well....
-
I am having problems with tracking on my tablet. No tracking shows. I click on participatants and nothing happens. It is OK on my laptop. I am using the same web address. Is anyone else having problems.
-
Which browser? I had the same issue with Chrome and needed to update then it was ok.

Jim Mann almost at Ponden Reservoir O0
-
DinoF seems to be doing well
-
Addictive dot-watching time has arrived so I am glad I have found the thread for the sofa supporters. I have got a rather busy week of work - poor planning on my part. But I will do my best to keep updated via here, FB and watching those dots.
Good to know that sussamb and slogger are providing hands on support - always good to get the insider info. Wonder if there will be any controversies this year. I must say I was looking at some of the challenger packs and wondering how on earth they get all their gear in such small bags.
I love the snippets of film on FB - the runners always seem so cheery!!!
Happy dot watching!
-
So we took 5 days to get to Gargrave and the leader is already past there! Though to be fair we probably only walked until about 5pm ;D ;D
Does anyone know if they have to stay at the checkpoints for a minimum amount of time?
-
Good Grief - the leader has done 79 miles today and is almost at Malham - and here's me feeling pleased with myself for completing a 3 mile Parkrun! :o
-
Have all of those map view options always been available? I'm loving the aerial view option.
-
Does anyone know if they have to stay at the checkpoints for a minimum amount of time?
Only for medical reasons, including lack of sleep.I doubt if they would let anyone run without sleep for more than three days as its a dangerous environment and the runners are often on their own.
-
Some of the checkpoints are restricted to 30 mins ours is one of them not easy to get them warm and fed and back out in 30 mins but it has put an end to the crowding, it flows much better in here with the new restrictions. I`m looking forward to wednesday to early Saturday when they come through.
-
20 minutes in and they are starting to drop down off Kinder.
-
Have all of those map view options always been available? I'm loving the aerial view option.
No, that's new this year.
-
Looks like theres already a diversion because of the weather - the wind? Other than the first few, the challengers are now avoiding PenYGhent.
-

Fell was hit by 70mph gusts making conditions on the top too dangerous.A sensible decision considering the runners would be very tired at that point.
-
Jasmine Paris is right up with the front men. :o
-
Just had a look at http://sandctrust.org.uk/stayatastation/webcams/ribblehead.htm (http://sandctrust.org.uk/stayatastation/webcams/ribblehead.htm) and the wind sounds like it's raging even lower down.
Wouldn't want to be DinoF on the moors just now.
-
At CP2, Hawes. Just spoken to a DNF and apparently wind is horrific, knocking quite a few over. Don't get deployed til tomorrow so pics then with luck O0
-
Jasmine Paris is right up with the front men. :o
Only to be expected from someone who has done a 15 hour Bob Graham round and a winter BG in 18 hours (second only to Jim Mann). Most entrants to this race have previously had a trail running/adventure racing background and its the first time we have seen these elite British fell runners tackle this race.If Jim Mann's performance is anything to go on she is in with a realistic chance of winning this race.

Thanks for the info. My daughter is now hooked on this too.

Well done DinoF terrific run. maybe try the big one next year?

Question - what happens to the times of those who went over Pen y Ghent before the diversion was put in place? Or is a time penalty added to those diverted?
-
Well run, DinoF, it must have been horrendous over Cam Fell.
-
We were wondering how diversions affected times as well. They seem to be back to going over Pen y Ghent again now.
-
Congratulations O0 DinoF.

I keep getting updates from my daughter.

I keep getting updates from my daughter.
:) It is very nice seeing a woman in the lead :)
-
Not surprised. She arrived at CP2 looking far fitter than Eugeni or Eoin. Stopped briefly for food, and was off. Very impressive.
-
:) It is very nice seeing a woman in the lead :)
Looks like she has got Eugeni going hell for leather up Shunner trying to catch her.Perhaps he is in panic mode and worried about not having a guide tonight? ;D
-
:) It is very nice seeing a woman in the lead :)
Definitely April! Doing it for us girls O0
-

Don't believe there is any penalty O0
Edit: Just checked and no penalty as it was a diversion due to safety concerns
-

Thanks, was wondering how they handled that.
-
The pace at the front is unreal, almost sub three day pace.Eugeni and Jasmin are near Tan Hill (124 miles).Looks like Eoin has been dropped.
-
I'm wondering if they will pay for the fast pace later and Eoin will catch them up?
The leaders have covered 136.6 miles with only an hours rest in total since 8am yesterday. Incredible.
-
Eoin hasn't updated for a long time so who knows where he is.
-
He has just been tracked at 18.15 about 7 miles behind the front two.
I have lots I really should be doing but I have decided to dot watch instead :)
-
Eion had a little sleep
-
Yes, a good hour. May help him later as the two leaders will need to rest sometime, won't they :o
-
Yes, a good hour. May help him later as the two leaders will need to rest sometime, won't they :o
You would think so but half way in 33 hours is as impossible as barely resting.
-
The leaders must be going to stop for a while at Middleton, surely?
Comparing my mileage since Jan 1st to what they are doing is laughable :)
I've managed 34.5 miles in 13 days.
-
Just catching up on progress. Gosh they go like the clappers, don't they?!
Can Jasmin keep it up, I wonder? I can't remember a female competitor
leading the main race before.
-
I love the little icons under the numbers on the dots, especially the spanner. Imagination boggles!
-
I was wondering what that one meant :)
I am assuming the one at the moment on Eugeni and Jasmin's means they are out of contact? I see Eugeni left Middleton 15 minutes before Jasmin. How far will he be ahead when they reappear on the tracker? I hope Jasmin catches him up.
-
She's less than a mile behind at High Cup Nick.
-
Told you that you would become addicted to this Richard.
-
Sad, isn't it. :)
-
She's less than a mile behind at High Cup Nick.
I've been reading about her past competitions. Crikey she is amazing, I think she might be able to win this, I hope she does O0
-
Jasmin 8 mins behind arriving at Dufton.
I hope she can take this too April it would be amazing.
-
I'm now at Langdon Beck YHA having got here at 0200, had to rescue a few walkers who'd taken wrong turnings off Cam Road and a couple who had hit the wall coming off Cam Road into Hawes.
Jasmine right behind Eugenie at Dufton O0
-
Jasmin must barely have spent 10 mins in Dufton.
-
She has caught him up outside of Dufton.I feel if she is going to make a break it will be over the next three miles as she is very strong on ascents as you would expect from the current British fell running champion. All credit to Eugeni though as he has gone way beyond what he has done before and made a race out of it.
-
Gripping stuff - neck and neck with Cross Fell coming up - but I am going to stop looking at dots for a while and take the dog for a walk down in South Ronaldsay before the weather closes in.
-
Was thinking it'll come down to that last couple of sections from bellingham upto cheviots, if they are still together leaving bellingham then it'll be game on. O0
-
Don't want to hijack the thread while we're now all watching the main event, but just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their support on my baby Spine run. Lots of fun out there!

Not at all.Its good to have someone on the forum to follow, especially as Slogger is no longer competing.

I've just been reading her blog. She has a baby just over a year old and her latest entry on 5th January ends with:-
"my intention to complete the weaning process over Christmas suffered a big blow when Rowan got two viral infections back-to-back and refused to take anything except breast milk for 5 days. Now I’m trying to work out the feasibility of pumping at every checkpoint to keep myself milked... "
Maybe that's why she was 15 minutes later than Eugeni getting out of Middleton! ;D
And well done DinoF :)

She is an incredible athlete. I was disappointed not to have Pavel to watch this year but Jasmin is more than making up for it. :)

Well done Dino!
-
Yes well done Dino, sorry we didn't manage to meet up.
I'm now at Dufton waiting for John Knapp, his tracker has stopped working and I have a new one for him. Jasmine is fed up with Eugenie, who we know cannot navigate, as he's letting her do the hard nav work. She's hoping to get away from him shortly and my money is certainly on her winning O0
Edit: She's left him sleeping at Alston O0 O0
-
Jasmin runs whilst Eugeni sleeps! Hope that she gives him the slip.
Edit - She has a 4 mile lead.
-

Glad that you are getting John a new tracker as his wife is not on Facebook and I've had to be updating her from the updates there. Good work!

I hate Jasmin Paris. She makes me feel so inadequate. ;D
Eugeni has got tackle the ground before Hadian's Wall alone.Should make for an interesting evening. ;)
-
He's set off now, I wonder if he can pull any back.
-
Glad that you are getting John a new tracker as his wife is not on Facebook and I've had to be updating her from the updates there. Good work!
He's just arrived here. Stopping to eat and top up water. New tracker is fitted and should ping up once Race HQ activates it.

O0 Thanks for this sussamb, I did wonder who was doing the nav :)
Eugeni has got tackle the ground before Hadian's Wall alone.Should make for an interesting evening. ;)
Yes this is area is featureless just about, I have been there during the daytime in clear weather and I remember thinking I wouldn't like to come over here in the dark or clag.
COME ON JASMIN O0 O0 O0 O0
Sorry, getting a bit excited :)
-
Nowt wrong with Jasmins nav skills O0 She did that bit over Hartleyburn Common seemingly with ease. I wonder if Eugeni will do as well?
-
. Jasmine is fed up with Eugenie, who we know cannot navigate, as he's letting her do the hard nav work.
Fell runners dislike trail runners/track runners who can't navigate and tag along with them for an easy ride. The usual opinion is if they can't navigate they shouldn't be there.
-
Comparing my mileage ...... to what they are doing is laughable :)
I've managed 34.5 miles in 13 days.
Maybe, but their TR photos will be nowhere near as good as yours O0
-
Just a 'novice' question from me - is Jasmine (and others) likely to be stopping at Billingham ? The distance from where she is now looks horrendous, you have to marvel at their fitness.
-
Jasmine is planning to get some sleep at Bellingham then run to the end O0
-
Thanks for the update sussamb O0
Maybe, but their TR photos will be nowhere near as good as yours O0
;D Thanks but I wish I had their stamina.
Eugeni seems to be doing ok with his nav over the Common. I thought he might struggle a bit. Jasmin seems to be 6 miles ahead of him atm. I don't envy her journey through the forested bits in the dark on the way to Bellingham.
-
Weather update from Byrness cold drizzly and windy. Perfect spiney weather
-
Thanks for the update Forest View, keep us informed.
My daughter is absolutely hooked on dot watching and is now reading this thread.
Hi, Ridge daughter!
-
A lot of us ladies are watching more closely this year I wonder why?
-
My daughter is absolutely hooked on dot watching and is now reading this thread.
Hi, Ridge daughter!
I should really be doing my coursework but this is much more important.
This is all your fault, Ridge
-
A lot of us ladies are watching more closely this year I wonder why?
It is fantastic that a woman is leading the race. If Jasmin wins I wonder what her time will be?
I should really be doing my coursework but this is much more important.
You are quite right RidgeDaughter O0
Hello and welcome to the forum :)
Ridge is a bad influence, he has tried to entice pleb into the same addiction :o
-
Even Mrs pdstsp is showing interest.
-
I certainly don't envy the man who is heading up Cross Fell right now.
-
It is fantastic that a woman is leading the race. If Jasmin wins I wonder what her time will be?
Probably around 3 days 20 hours or less.So far she has averaged 3.3 mph which is very fast.No man has ever averaged over 3mph in this race.
Eoin seems to have faded this year but perhaps that is down to his experience in the brutal Barkley marathon in America.
-
EEEE! Eugeni is closing in as Jasmin finally gets a nap at Bellingham. O.o
Got to be a wise move to finally rest up, tho.
Check that--it was a break, but she's moving now that he's at S*itlington Hall. Hrm . . .thoughts on whether to censor that wonderful place name or not?
-
Thanks Tony, I thought it seemed to be very fast. Yes, Eoin hasn't been able to keep up, neither has Eugeni :)
It is ok to write [censored] Hall, staggeringdragon ;) But it will be censored by the forum thingy :)
I was already so impressed by Jasmin's race so far, now even more so. She only had 1hr 27 break at Bellingham :o She is unbelievable!
-
Jasmin has had less than 8 hours rest since she started. It is amazing how they do it.
-
Jasmin has had less than 8 hours rest since she started. It is amazing how they do it.
Indeed. Only 1h27 last night - and she's running whilst Eugeni sleeps. 6 mile gap now.
-
She is a machine.
So - predictions when she will finish...
Is the course record in danger?
Got to go out to work now - wish there was an audio stream so I could keep up in the car!!!
-
Course record in big danger of being smashed, in my opinion - she's got less than 30 miles to go by my reckoning, at 3mph that's 10 hours.
So my prediction - 82 hours!
-
Time that Eugeni got out of bed!
Edit - he's on the move now.
-
I'm at work and will be trying not to check this every few minutes and actually get on with things.
She is doing amazingly well.
Time that Eugeni got out of bed!
He's got a fair gap over Eoin and there's no way he is catching Jasmin baring a disaster so he may as well sleep in.
-

Fair point - he's 9 miles behind Jasmin. But I'm sure that he will be driven to do the best that he can, and to beat Eoin's record.
..and it's great being retired. Trading money for time definitely recommended. 8)
-
I wish I didn't have to work either :(
At work now but don't start until 9 so I can dot watch until then. From Byrness it is 25.9 miles approx. I worked out earlier she may finish before 5pm, don't know I this is accurate mind! There is snow forecast for overnight tonight so it looks like she has timed it well, the other racers will have a more difficult time of it.
I hope I manage to "watch" her finish.
-
I think that feels a bit quick April but who knows with the way she is motoring. I will just have to time my journey home so as not to miss the finish.
-
I think that feels a bit quick April but who knows with the way she is motoring.
I made that calculation based on the mph she is averaging. I think she has about 28ish miles to go @ 3.3 mph = 8.5 hrs = 17.15pm. I hope she takes longer so I can "see" her finish, I will be travelling home at 5 and don't get home until 5.50pm (all being well with buses and traffic), so a bit slower will suit me.

Perhaps we could ask forest view to ask Jasmin to slow down a little? ;)

She is about 15-20 mins away andI have the kettle on and a meal ready but 30 mins stay is the max here.

Please tell her she has a lot of people cheering her on and addicted to dot watching

Jasmin has had less than 8 hours rest since she started. It is amazing how they do it.
Perhaps this is where having had a baby is helping, she’s probably used to hardly any sleep!
-
Why do they miss out the section over padon hill?
-
Why do they miss out the section over padon hill?
There’s often a diversion there for the Spine race, I think it’s pretty boggy there at the best of times.
-
There’s often a diversion there for the Spine race, I think it’s pretty boggy there at the best of times.
Yeah it was easily my worst section of the p w, had me screaming out into the forests just thru pure anger. But blenkinsopp common wasn't much better and that doesn't get diverted and is always wet!! Just want to understand why one bit is avoided thru conditions when others are not.
-
Tree felling caused lots of diversions around there during 2018 season. Possibly that possibly just not safe, there is a permanent solution underway courtesy of rural funding.
-
Jasmin been and gone fed and watered and in really good spirits. I have seen pennine wayers in much worse states having done the 16 miles from Bellingham. It is unbelievable that she has just run 241 with almost no breaks. She is brilliant.

A strong backpacker can cover that section in 8 hours. For someone who has done the BG round the ascents in the Cheviots should be quite easy other than the inital slog up to the ridge.I would tend to agree with you and go for a finish time between 5-7 pm,though probably nearer to seven. On the descent to KY she will probably be averaging around 5 mph as its downhill and easy ground.

Just been looking at jasmin's and eugeni's split times from bellingham to the start of the road diversion before padon hill, it took jasmin 2h35 ish and eugeni is gunna do it in about 2h10, if eugeni doesn't need to stop anywhere for sleep and jasmin does in one of the huts then it will hopefully be more tense a finish. O0
-
Jasmin snatched 24 minutes rest at Byrness - this will stand her in good stead.
And she's just about completed the steep slog up Byrness Hill.
-
Posting as Slogger. It's 11.30am and Jasmine has an 8 mile lead on Eugenie and a 29 mile lead on Eoin, she is going to smash the record for sure, which is really no surprise given her extrordinary achievements last year. We went to watch the races at the start and over that weekend, that first day across Featherbed Moss before Snake Pass would have had ordinary mortals retireing fast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTVuyHP9Jwk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTVuyHP9Jwk)

TRY AGAIN.
-
Nice vid Slogger - you wouldn't catch me out in that - might catch a cold!
I am in awe of these people.
-
TRY AGAIN.
Thanks dav. Link working now.
Looks like normal Orkney weather to me! :)
Not sure that I would fancy walking 268 miles in it though.
Edit - Jasmin must only have about 17 miles to go now. What a performance!
-
On my lunch now. I see Eugeni has just reached Byrness and Jasmin has an 8 mile lead. I can't see him catching her now?
-
Eugeni fed and watered getting ready to set off looks in pretty good nick.
-
Eugeni fed and watered getting ready to set off looks in pretty good nick.
Well he is still leading the mens race, lets not forget!
Is he on course to beat the mens record?
-
I hope neither of them finish until I get home :)
-
Eugeni fed and watered getting ready to set off looks in pretty good nick.
He has been very impressive and can obviously find is way alone if he puts his mind to it.
-
Well he is still leading the mens race, lets not forget!
Is he on course to beat the mens record?
Indeed.
I believe that he will beat the men's record - comfortably too, as long as he keep going.
-
On my lunch now. I see Eugeni has just reached Byrness and Jasmin has an 8 mile lead. I can't see him catching her now?
Absolutely no chance now - she only has about 13 miles to go.
-
I don't suppose there’s any chance of this making the national news tonight, especially with all that’s going on with “that which must not be named on here” today? Imagine if a woman not only beats all the men, but takes the all time record too, that would make news headlines in most sports.
-
I doubt that it would get a mention even if the nation was not pre-occupied with you know what. :-X
Shame, as what an achievement; what a role model for women! And Jasmin will not just break the record - she'll smash it!
-
I find it difficult to comprehend really - the news is full of braying idiots (of all persuasions), while the competitors in this show the true power of the human being - inspiring really.
-
Jasmin only has 10 miles to go!
-
Jasmin only has 10 miles to go!
Not looking good for April then, she might just miss the finish!
-
She’s nearly at the turn off for the Cheviot, perhaps she could nip up there and back first ;D
Every year I wonder why they take the low route into KY, isn’t the high route the main route?
-
Not looking good for April then, she might just miss the finish!
Perhaps April can have a POETS day. Pop Off Early Today's Spinerace day.
-
Well, she's at the top of Auchope Cairn now, mostly downhill to KY - only 8 miles.
-
For us mere mortals, that uphill bit when you get to the road is a bit of a killer.
Wasn't the low route the original one? Then they developed the high route to make a better end. But I may be wrong about that.
-

Yes the low route was the original one, maybe that's why they go that way

Just spotted that on the map. I've not done the Pennine Way, but I know what you mean. A similar hill, Ore Brae, was my nemesis near the end of the Hoy Half Marathon some years ago.
-
I'm hoping she stops for a rest at the Auchope Hut so I don't miss it.
I can watch it on the vid thing if I do miss it :)
I have about an hour before I get home, I might just make it home. Praying the bus is wifi so I can watch on my tablet :)
-
Still 7 miles to go - you should make it - just.
-
You might just make it then April! Hope the bus doesn’t get stuck in traffic O0

It should take her around 2 hours to get to the finish. There is a bit of a climb when you leave the hut to the summit of the Schill so that tends to slow things down a little. With such a massive lead and breaking the record by such a large margin will put her under far less pressure and she will be aiming to get home without any mishaps.
-
I am home and settled in for the final stint - hope you make it too April!
Jasmin is approaching Hut 2. Unless something befalls Jasmin, Eugeni is not going to catch her up.
-
I am thinking/hoping that she will finish at about 6.45pm which will just give me time to get home from work if I slip away a bit early.
-
Well he is still leading the mens race, lets not forget!
Is he on course to beat the mens record?
Eoins 2016 record is 3 days 23 hours 17 minutes, so Eugenie has to arrive at the finish before 7.17am tomorrow morning to beat his record, assuming they started on time at 8am last sunday in Edale.
-
Looks like she's not stopping at hut 2, she's going for the end
-
Posting as Slogger. Jasmine has just reached Auchope Refuge Hut 2 at 5.02pm. She may take a short break as an SST (Spine Safety Team) will be in place there. just 8 mile to go and once over the Schill it's mostly flat to downhill apart from the sting in the tale up that steep lane before the final drop into kirk yetholm.
-
Doesn’t look like she stopped off for afternoon tea in the hut! ;D
I’ve just emailed BBC News to suggest they cover it.
-
She has just left hut 2 and is on the home stretch.Seems to be going very fast.
-
Hush my words, yes she's shot straight past Hut 2, unbelievable! she's going to break Eoins record by 12 hours!
-
I just watched the video footage of her at Bellingham overnight and she said how hard she had worked to get away from Eugeni and felt it was important to leave Bellingham ahead of him. Presumably runners can be updated on others' process as checkpoints.
Hi to RidgeDaughter and Dav - looks like the SST were unable to catch Jasmin as she flew past them!
-
Yes Sarah, I bet they were disappointed not to at least have a chat with her.
-
:D
dot watching on my computer - does anyone know how to get rid of the annoying facebook film box - it's cheesing me off!

She's really galloping - only 6 miles to go.

Thanks Richard - you see I thought that arrow would link me to the film. Now if it had been a cross instead...

So how is the course work going, working hard?
-
So how is the course work going, working hard?
Only as good as your work is
-
Posting as Slogger. Here's hoping Eugenie doesn't make his usual mistake of taking the slightly North East most path from Hut 2 Auchope, instead of the slightly North Western PW route up and over the Schill. Twice he's ended up in the valley and had to climb rough ground straight up to get back on route.
-
Oy - no family disputes here - it's in the house rules! ;D O0
Every time I look at the map Jasmin's dot moves a bit. She is going like the clappers.
-
The race is on, will April get home before Jasmin gets to KY ;D ;D
-
It will be the only race I would win against her!
-
The race is on, will April get home before Jasmin gets to KY ;D ;D
The tension is unbearable ;D :D
-
Intermittent WiFi on the bus!
-
She's at the top of the Schill already. Time I headed home too.
-
Posting as Slogger. At the other end of the race, will James and Lisa reach CP3 Middleton in Teesdale before the 8pm cut off? They have just over 8 miles to go and 2.5 hours. I fear they will just miss it. The cut off time is the time they have to exit the CP, but fingers and everything else crossed for them.
-
I just watched the video footage of her at Bellingham overnight and she said how hard she had worked to get away from Eugeni and felt it was important to leave Bellingham ahead of him. Presumably runners can be updated on others' process as checkpoints.
[They dot watch and time their sleeps to allow them to be woken to keep the desired distance between them and the following runners]
-
I feel like I should go and run up and down the stairs a few times, been doing too much dot watching today, not good for my health!
-
I'm home O0
Brilliant I can watch the dot finish ;D

Glad that you made it April - still 4 miles to go.

Thanks all, your posts did make me laugh O0

Just finished yesterday's work - now I can watch the dot for a while in peace.

What about today’s work?
-
What about today’s work?
Surely that will be tomorrow's yesterday's work...? O0 :D
-
It will be the only race I would win against her!
Congratulations you did it.
-
:) For once the bus got me home early!
-
Today's work will have to wait - there's a dot to watch. ;D
-
While we wait for Jasmin to finish, does anyone know if she has competed in the Spine or Challenger before? She is clearly a very experienced and talented trail runner with excellent navigation skills.
-
:) For once the bus got me home early!
That must be a record, just like the one Jasmin is creating today
-
It is a record, for the bus driver who isn't normally the best at being on time :D
-
Just realised I should have got something quicker for dinner tonight!
-

The first time was in daylight as well.Forgiveable at the end of a race like this as he was out on his feet.Snow is expected later in the night so he had better get a move on.
-
She ran it with her husband North to South a couple of years ago but they were doing a more conventional run then ie. sleping in beds between massive distances ran.
-

She's not a newby; check her out on Wikipedia. Looks like this is her first Spine though.
-
Only 2 miles to go!
-
Now I have another dilemma ::)
I have a shopping delivery due between 7 and 8, they sometimes come a bit earlier. I still might bleddy miss the finish :D
-
Invite them in to watch it April!
-
I've got a dog to walk, but she can wait - and hailstones are rattling the window right now.
-
Invite them in to watch it April!
Excellent idea.
-

Another summers day on Orkney then.
-
Shopping delivery? How posh :D
-
Now live on facebook
-
Lol everyone, I was just about to say its live on fb too O0
-
FB livestream stared now - waiting for her to come in. I just texted my son that (another dot watcher) but he is watching parliament. Now what is more important - [censored]*** or Spine!
Ah - the live stream has stopped. Perhaps they were just testing it.

That censored word was Brexit with a few asterisks. I think the asterisks were censored!!!

Nooo! You’ve said the word that mustn’t be said on here Sarah! :D

Why is it now of all times that the internet keeps flicking on and off!
Sorry, stupid place I live.....
-
I’m multitasking, peeling potatoes and dot watching :D
-
She's not a newby; check her out on Wikipedia. Looks like this is her first Spine though.
Its her first non-stopper at this distance. Her other races have mainly been stage races, faster running but only for 6-8 hours a day.
-

Makes her achievement even more impressive.
-
She is practically there - where's the live feed?!
-
on now
-
Facebook live feed is working now.
-
headtorches in sight
-
She's in!
-
A real achievement. My internet went down just after she touched the wall. >:(
-
Found it. Phew!
Amazing achievements. Shedding a little tear here - I am such an emotional lightweight!!!
-
Amazing
-
Great achievement, something to show her daughter when she’s older :)
-
I managed to watch her finish, shopping not here yet O0
Pdstsp - it is from Tesco, so not that posh ;D
Wow, must go and dry my eyes before the shopping does come.
Incredible she is that Jasmin, she looks as if she has been out for a stroll!

Glad I am not the only one sniffling away.
I love the community spirit here in our sofa support group!!
-
Live stream packed in,at least for me,as her head torch came into view.I am still baffled as to why she looks like she has just left Edale.
Bit annoyed with her though as I predicted 3 days 12 hours earlier in the week and she has gone and bettered it by 50mins! ;D
-
Here's a link to the Grough article (speedy!) with a few facts and figures

-
What an amazing woman, what an achievement. I'm glad I saw it happen - I can say I was there, virtually !
I think it will be a while before that is bettered.
Like how her little girl pulled her hat off - obviously didn't look like mummy with it on O0
-
It doesn't look as though the last two have much hope of getting to Middleton in time. Does anyone know what the other cut-off times are, if any?
-
I don't know about the cut offs, I'm afraid. I saw those 2 competitors were mentioned on FB too
Eugeni is approaching Hut 2 - looks like he would have beaten the record as it stood at the start of the week.
-
Eugeni is approaching Hut 2 - looks like he would have beaten the record as it stood at the start of the week.
I wonder how he is feeling? I think Jasmin probably has made him go faster than he might have done if she wasn't there?
My shopping has arrived and has been put away. I must do some chores before the next session of dot watching.
-
I wonder how he is feeling? I think Jasmin probably has made him go faster than he might have done if she wasn't there?
I agree. She has made him up his game and get to a new level. It tends to be fashionable to criticise him, especially about his nav,but I have been seriously impressed by him this time.
-
Eugeni is approaching Hut 2 - looks like he would have beaten the record as it stood at the start of the week.
I know it is probably no consolation but he'll probably get the mens record.
-
It's hard. If Jasmin Paris hadn't been there being so impressive and breaking all records, We would all have been amazed at Eugeni's times.
-
Yes, can't help but feel some sympathy for Eugeni. But he's still going to win the men's race, and set a new men's course record.
Edit - he's resting at the hut, so the men's record is in the bag unless something unforeseen happens.
-
It doesn't look as though the last two have much hope of getting to Middleton in time. Does anyone know what the other cut-off times are, if any?
They just made it, medics had to treat them outside the CP after they'd left or they'd have been timed out.
Think I'm off to Hen Hole hut tomorrow
-
They just made it, medics had to treat them outside the CP after they'd left or they'd have been timed out.
The tracker still shows them at the CP are they having to sleep outside in the open?
-
I agree. She has made him up his game and get to a new level. It tends to be fashionable to criticise him, especially about his nav,but I have been seriously impressed by him this time.
He certainly did navigate ok :)
He is still resting in the Auchope Hut, I will have to go to bed now so he will probably have finished by the time I wake up. Well done Eugeni O0
-
Eoin has just left also in good nick.
-
He certainly did navigate ok :)

Looks like he is ready to go and hopefully will be at the finish around 3am.
Edit:The tracker shows he has gone back to bed!
-
here comes the snow I knew it was too good to last.
-
The snow will make things more difficult for them all.
I see Eugeni had to retire 6km from the finish :o What a pity to not be able to finish when he was so close :( It would have been a great time.
Jasmin is on BBC Breakfast this morning at 8.30am according to the fb page O0
-
A great shame that Eugeni had to retire so close to the finish - he must have been in a bad way.
I see that Eoin is over the Cheviot, and is on his way down to the hut.
-
He pressed his emergency button and a team responded. He said he was cold and out of food, although he'd received help at the Hen Hole hut. Doctor who saw him wasn't concerned with his condition so why he quit is a bit of a mystery.
-
Baffling when he was so close.
From the Spine Race facebook page:
"We can confirm that racer 205 Eugeni Roselló Solé (https://www.facebook.com/eugeni.rosellosole?__tn__=K-R&eid=ARC7y8tIsWJ_cRaMMpRIDjIbjjo0RdWdCe70ynizHygt5AwZeSkZ0bOYKgo01Y3x3zrDB53oIF6VNrIe&fref=mentions&__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARCIagqaLOX_q08UKMHq-9vUEFePkn395qGyFWaG2N-pKU1GEJZoMjQiIN__kPpN7up4_O4jtDRG9BxdNwRH1V57sPVO6CkNVfZ22U2vbUE9cMcbrVBRu5EaDAIwjHvyn_u9p8DfiLd7Oivy63jJn4aribavCq_0jC5mLMJnACqxSTqKo3j0GqhiYhYgZjNN9tPnp14wyTnICn47mZRFb9aeit8XWZujbinaXzrsBf_xWVmt3f6GdUrXZs-tjTIcVkRNbQddX8ZdipvhjjnhjQlr0wy7kqEbKe37IJr69ue1oQ5-BCdavJD0sw8ggTflo5xDNOQP7WPpL4eHC7T9aVDKEw) has withdrawn from the Montane Spine Race with just 6km to go to the finish. The Spine Safety Team supported him off the hill. He gave everything he had, and after pushing himself to the limit, it's heartbreaking he was unable to finish after such a great pace all week. He's now warm, fed and getting some well-needed rest under the watchful eye of our team."
-
Eoin on the move again - he didn't stop long in the hut.
-
Thanks for the info all. That is shame when he was so close. I haven't walked the PW so I don't know how tough the final 6k are - would he have been over the Schil by then?
Perusing further on FB one comments indicates that one of his shoes was shredded and so his toes were open to the elements. Not sure how true this is - but it did make me wonder whether competitors have spare pares in their drop bags...
Come on Eoin!
-
Shocked that Eugeni had to pull out, he must have been in a dreadful state.
-
I think he must have been unable to carry on for him to stop so close to the finish. Perhaps he was mentally spent as well as physically?
-
Jasmin about to come up on the BBC Breakfast show.
-
Hurry up I’ve got to leave for work soon!
-
Probably still waking Jasmin up!!
-
Jasmin about to come up on the BBC Breakfast show.
[censored]**y BBC. Banging on about the 'B Word' now!
-
On TV she was trying to be so modest after such an achievement. Only right she should be on national TV.
-
Amazing :D
Noticed she wears the same running shoes as me! there any similarity ends ;D
-
Incredibly well done by Jasmin - blew it out of the water in her debut year. Must admit I hadn't heard of her before but she seems to have an incredible fitness level.
Also regarding Eugeni, there's a post on his facebook by what seems to be a family member, the translated version is below:
Sorry to inform you that Eugene has retired (or have retired it) when he was missing 6 km to reach the goal. It seems that I had some problem related to the heart due to the overexertion. Despite not having been able to get through the meth line for us it's like I did. We only rest congratulate you for the great race you have done and for having given everything and more. Everyone who elconeixem well we know what fighter he is and how much he strives. I've been seat it since he came out of the last place he slept, and I can assure you that the last 4 hours must have suffered a lot. Recover and much encouragement. You're a champion from head to toe. We love you
Which would imply he pressed the emergency button presumably fearing a heart attack? As someone who has done endurance events in the past (though nothing like the Spine Race) I can't imagine I'd jack it in 6km from the finish when I was on for a men's record unless I felt I was at death's door.
-
For what it`s worth he seemed fine when he was here although because of language issues I didn`t have as much of a chat as I had with Jasmin & Eoin but he ate and drank and chatted. It was bitterly cold last night even down here in the valley maybe that played a part.
-
Which would imply he pressed the emergency button presumably fearing a heart attack? ... I can't imagine I'd jack it in 6km from the finish when I was on for a men's record unless I felt I was at death's door.
I agree, he wouldn't have stopped without a very good reason. It must have been very scary for him in the dark and so isolated when he felt so ill. I hope is ok now.
Well done to Eoin, I see he finished earlier and John Knapp is at the Auchope Hut. I can't wait to watch the interview with Jasmin when I get home.
-
In equal measures I feel as pleased for Jasmin as I feel sorry for Eugeni. The poor guy, if it was in a film you'd think they were making it up for the sake of drama. It sounds as though he did the right thing.
Presumably they walked him off the hill - does anyone know ?
Hope he is recovering well and not just physically.
+1 for inov8 running shoes O0

Yes it`s about to get exciting up here not much sleep tonight. Great fun.
-
I think Eugeni took the honourable way out. What man would want it on his CV that he finished second to a girl who was expressing breast milk at check points? ;)
-
Just spoken to the team that took him off the hill. He'd been helped at Hen Hole and felt he could make it, but lack of sleep ended up with him collapsing with 6 ks or so to go. On top of that his kit really wasn't up to the conditions, he was unable to get his stove going and was out of food anyway. He was warmed up then escorted off the hill.
Having said that I think what tonyk said is also pretty close to the truth ;)
-
Guess men might have to start getting used to such things
-
@ Tonyk and sussamb - ya pair of old cynics ;)
I have just watched the BBC Breakfast interview, she is so lovely :) So modest but best of all she pronounced "Cheviots" correctly ;D
I remember last year the bloke on the Spine Race facebook live feed pronouncing it incorrectly. I was correcting him all the time, saying its "ChEEviots" ya pillock!
-
@ Tonyk and sussamb - ya pair of old cynics ;)
The ignominy of not only being beaten by a woman but soundly thrashed by such a wide record breaking margin.
-
I think if you are winning you always have a bit more left in the tank than if you are losing. It must be very draining to be trying to catch up for so long, especially when sleep deprived, cold and exhausted.
-

Watched the interview myself and she does come across as very modest and nice.
-
Meanwhile the race goes on..... looking interesting between 3rd and 4th man, only 3 miles between them and then only 4miles to 5th place. Anything could happen!
-
I was just thinking it is almost 24 hours since Jasmin finished and only Eoin and John Knapp have finished within those 24 hrs. I know there has been snow up there, has there been enough to slow people down?
-
Not much snow at all it`s just very cold. You are all correct Jasmine is a really lovely young woman. I have met dozens of people who haven`t done half of what she has done who are so far up themselves they would need GPS to find their way out.
-
I don't envy Oriol Antoli Sarrau (104), just setting off from Byrness for a long night out on the Cheviots.
-
He is in good shape and very experienced, he was the first guy to crack an ultra run along the longest inland UK trail in the 14 day cut off (sorry I can`t remember it`s name but it`s 600+odd miles) and the first 2 years there were no finishers at all. He has DNF`d in the Spine a couple of years ago and wanted to sort that out which he is currently doing in fine style.
-
I have met dozens of people who haven`t done half of what she has done who are so far up themselves they would need GPS to find their way out.
This made me laugh :)
It is very cad here, east of Carlisle, I don't envy anyone out there on the tops.
It does look like you will be busy in the next few hours forest view, good luck O0 Thank goodness you are there for them O0
-
I was just thinking it is almost 24 hours since Jasmin finished and only Eoin and John Knapp have finished within those 24 hrs. I know there has been snow up there, has there been enough to slow people down?
No, just a light dusting O0
-

He'll be fine, he's a very cheerful individual who knows exactly what he's doing.

Not much snow at all it`s just very cold. You are all correct Jasmine is a really lovely young woman. I have met dozens of people who haven`t done half of what she has done who are so far up themselves they would need GPS to find their way out.
. I will think and maybes even inadvertently use that last phrase when at the various meetings I need to go to.
There was an article last week about a US long distance runner who got her husband to bring her beer and tacos on the last leg of a huge run which she won. I'll try and find it and post a link.
Search for Camille Herron on BBC Sport.

I'm sure he does, but I still don't envy him! :)
-
The ignominy of not only being beaten by a woman but soundly thrashed by such a wide record breaking margin.
And by such a 'slip of a lass' too ;D
I know I shouldn't compare, but her achievements and her whole demeanour are so exceptional - she is a great role model for everyone, not just the young. .... And for some reason, maybe it's just me, I find Mo so irritating (no, not Mowlem - the other one, the runner).
I know he is a brilliant athlete and his achievements are astounding, but ...............
She gets my vote for Sports Personality of the year anyhow.
-
I was just thinking it is almost 24 hours since Jasmin finished and only Eoin and John Knapp have finished within those 24 hrs. I know there has been snow up there, has there been enough to slow people down?
Most of them are going at a good pace.Second female,Shelli Gordon,is near Bryness and might finish faster than Eugeni did in 2013 when he won the race provided she can finish in the next 17 hours.
-
That made me look at past results. Does anyone know what happened in 2015? Did they have to abandon part of it?
It does make you realise how the whole thing has speeded up, I suppose they just get a lot less sleep.
-

The race was held several times in 2015 due to very high winds. As far as I understand the times represent periods that the athletes were moving rather than overall times. It was a bit of a messy result and not a very satisfactory race.Yes,you are right, the sleep periods have gradually reduced as the race has become more competitive.
-
The cold was taking it`s toll last night Shelli was freezing when she got here, the medic worked to get her going again she really needed some sleep but there is a 30 min limit here so when she had warmed up and had her feet sorted she went up to the 1st hut for some rest I think she is being fuelled by pure determination. Still it is warming up nicely here now blue skies and an almost Tropical temp of -6c.
-
The sleep at Hut 1 obviously helped, she seems to be going pretty well now.
It must be cold on the tops if it's -6 in Byrness!
-
Wind chill is -20 on top. Shelli also needed considerably warming up at Bellingham, she even had to borrow my sleeping bag. She's now nearly at Hen Hole where half of my team is together with a medic where she'll be reassessed to ensure she's safe to continue.
-
Hopefully she'll make it.
Not far to go now, and still a few hours of daylight.
-
Shelli has passed all the checks at Hut 2 and now starting the final few miles O0

Pleased to hear it.She certainly deserves to finish after that effort. O0

Good news re Shelli. Sussamb i really appreciate the behind the scenes info - gives great insight into the care that is taken.

She's over the Schill, mostly downhill now, and still more than an hour of daylight.

Jo Barrat has been retired off hadrians wall and is being warmed up in Sill YHA at Once Brewed.2015 is listed as a unique Spine Race, storms forced the race to be held a couple of times for many hours. Some of the leaders went over Pen Y Ghent, most diverted direct to Horton. Again some leaders went over Cross Fell, most diverted from Cow Green reservoir on a more direct line to Garrigill. It is going to be a very challenging night over the Cheviots, the SST's could have their work cut out.
-
She's over the Schill, mostly downhill now, and still more than an hour of daylight.
Only 1.5 miles to go. The end must almost be in sight.
-
Just that [censored]**r of a hill to get over leading into KY.....
-
Ooh I ‘ve never been censored before! ;D
-
Looks like she has just finished O0
-
Was she raising money as I heard talk of £20,000.
-
Well done Shelli, finshed just at the right time, me thinks.
-
Just noticed there's a defibrillator on the wall just by where they touch it to finish. Hope they don't think they'll be needing it!
-

Yes CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably). I believe her partner took his own life?

What a ghastly experience for someone to go through and then go and compete in this race and finish it.
-
Yep, just intercepted her before the final downhill into KY for a quick hug before the crowds hit her. She's absolutely shattered but an amazing woman and great cause. No indication her husband was going to do what he did, very sad.
-
What a terrible experience to have to go through. All credit to her for doing something so positive.
Well done Shelli!
-
Going on past results its most likely the third fastest time by a woman, only Jasmin Paris and Carol Morgan who are both fell running champions have bettered it.
-

I thought the same. She looked as if she had given her all. What an achievement.

That was a lovely gesture to go out and greet her. I'm sure it gave her an extra boost.

He is in good shape and very experienced, he was the first guy to crack an ultra run along the longest inland UK trail in the 14 day cut off (sorry I can`t remember it`s name but it`s 600+odd miles) and the first 2 years there were no finishers at all.
The trail is called the Monarch's Way and is circa 625 miles following Charles II's escape route after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester. The race route is a slightly abbreviated version of the full trail.
-
Thanks I don`t suppose you know what the name of the Ultra race that is held on it do you. The guy who was telling me about it said it`s name but I can`t remember. The thing about being an armchair athlete is you can be as ambitious as you like.
-
It's called the Monarch's Way Ultra - the race only has checkpoints about every 50 miles.
It was regarded as impossible before Lee-Stuart Evans managed an accompanied run over the full route earlier in the year in appalling weather. He took 16 days 9 hours, and spent hours wading through thigh deep water - remember last year's floods?!
Lee became obsessed with completing the course after failing the year before, and spent 12 months reconnoitering the route in detail - it's much harder to follow than the PW - particularly in Somerset..
I met both Lee and Oriol on their runs through the stretch I'm the Minder for.

Had a hectic day, only just catching up this evening.
Looks like they all have a chance of completing.

She has had an lot of coverage in the papers and not only in this country. The last time I can remember this happening was when 61 year old sheep farmer, Cliff Young, who was in his first race, won the 1983 Sydney to Melbourne 533 mile ultra marathon in 5 days 15 hours and beat an international field. He knocked 2 days off the record and didn't sleep at all during the race.
-
There’s a lot of people heading out from Byrness this morning, looks like Joyce and Colin have had a busy night!
It’s lovely reading about all the people when they finish, such as Alan Purdue who is in his 3rd spine and has his first finish, that must feel good. And Paul Horsewood who is planning on doing a 10k cross country on Sunday! It means just as much to finish to those further back as it does to the front runners, maybe more.
-
Busy dosen`t quite cover it we met some great people just 3 more then ZZZZzzzzzzz........

No sleep for you just yet then.
Make sure you save some food for Glyn Thomas, it looks like he will need it.

There is no official cut off time from Byrness as it's not a full checkpoint.

Glyn has had to be taken off. Satoshi helped him and stayed until help arrived so he has been given extra time to try to finish. This race brings out the best in everyone.

That’s lovely to hear. Tell him we’re all rooting for him when he gets to you.

Well, the first Spine race that I have followed draws to a close. They're all heroes out there, not just Jasmin and Eugeni and Eoin. Even to make the attempt takes courage, and to have the determination to plough on through and finish....congratulations to all.

Having helped out on the Spine and Challenger this year I'm planning to do the Challenger in 2020, can't be this year as clashes with my C2C O0

I watched an interview with Satoshi yesterday and he comes across as a really nice guy, very polite and good humoured.I wish him well and am sure he will be able to get to the finish as the weather on the tops looks a bit more reasonable tonight...... minus 1 and 6 mph winds. O0

Not for me as it's just about all tarmac.
-
There is no official cut off time from Byrness as it's not a full checkpoint.
There is actually Sussam. You have to leave Byrness with at least 20 hours left ie: Midday today, Saturday.
-
Strange, our team leader said there were only advisories there based on how fast folks were moving etc
-
The 'Lantern Rouge', Satoshu Funakoshi (143), arrived at Byrness at 1315, and they have let him carry on after 1h15 rest - he's now heading up into the Cheviots; a long night ahead. Hopefully he'll dig deep and make it.
-
That should give him enough time, hope he makes it. There are medics at both huts and numerous safety teams up there now so he'll be watched and assessed carefully.
-
Ekimo Kwakami is showing a bed sign and seems to have been dropped by the pair she was with. She is at the point where you rejoin the border fence before Hut 1.

I have passed the message on. He looks tired but happy he`s having a meal then off he goes again.
Now you can have a nap

Not True - with all the flagging a greater proportion of the PW is paved.
Outside of Worcester at the start and Brighton/Shoreham and the finish the only major tarmaced stretches are through Birmingham and Bristol. The late Trevor Anthill who devised the Monarch's Way avoided roads wherever possible, sometimes zig-zaging wildly to do so.
Its use of minor footpaths is what makes navigation difficult in walker hostile counties such as Somerset - often there is no visible route on the ground. Landowners frequently removed all public footpath signs let along named trail waymarking.
The difference as you cross county boundaries can be amazing.

He appears to be moving very slowly, looking at his tracking points. 20 minutes to cover only 250 metres.
-
He's up the steep bit out of Byrness now. I hope he makes it having dragged himself all this was.

UP DATE, UP DATE, for goodness sake, UP DATE.

Am I the only one watching this evening?
I am looking in every now and again - but the laptop is about to run out of juice.
I'm a bit worried about Emiko - I assume she's bivvied down, but I'd have thought she'd want to be moving by now...
-

I hope he makes it but things don't look good at the moment.
As I understand it Emiko has retired at hut 1.

Is that where her tracker is now? I must admit to having lost track of Hut 1 this year!!!
-

I'm watching too. Don't think that Satoshu Funakoshi is going to make it unfortunately, he's just moving too slowly.
I'm a bit worried about Emiko - I assume she's bivvied down, but I'd have thought she'd want to be moving by now...
I think that there is a refuge hut there, so she's not out in the open. Edit - Lamb Hill refuge hut.
As I understand it Emiko has retired at hut 1.
That's a pity, tonyk. So close.

Painful to watch isn't it, poor guy.
I think that there is a refuge hut there, so she's not out in the open. She'll need to start moving soon if she wants to finish though.
She hasn't updated for so long either her tracker isn't working or it is not with her any more.
-
The section he is on can be a bit tricky to navigate in the dark/fog as you leave the border fence. He has got the right line so it indicates he is still thinking clearly which is a good sign. When people become hypothermic and walk very slowly they are often confused and have problems with navigation.
Emiko retired in hut one.
-
Thats my dot watching done for another year it`s been fun.
-
By my really rough calculations Satoshi is managing about 1km/hour at the moment.
-
By my really rough calculations Satoshi is managing about 1m/hour at the moment.
Its pretty slow stuff but he seemed to be moving okay in the earlier video that was filmed in the dark.He said both legs and a hand were giving trouble and pain killers were not working but he was determined to push on and was in good spirits. He has until 10am tomorrow morning to finish as he was given a two hour extension for staying with and assisting a runner who had collapsed. Its going to be tight but provided the medics don't pull him he might make it.
Edit:It seems he has retired at hut one. :(
-
I've just edited my post to say 1km/hour which is what I meant to put the first time.
-
Gees he still faster than me when I'm fresh. :D
Mel can you believe the speed this man is doing at the end of the Spine.
-
Just watched video 9 - such a shame that Satoshi wasn't able to finish; what a great guy.
-
Well that is over for another year. I thoroughly enjoyed it as I always do.
-
I'm hooked.
-
Thank you guys for introducing me to the Spine race, although I’d heard of it, thanks to the tracking link I’ve followed it on and off this last few days so a bit of a late comer.
I haven’t posted, not really knowing much about it, but have found it quite amazing.
Well done Jasmin Paris, what a fantastic young woman for winning, but also every single one behind her, I’m in awe of everyone who has taken part.
And thanks to sussamb and others for the inside info.
Also feel sad for those who didn’t make it such as Satoshi and Emiko who didn’t get to touch the wall this year.
I will be ready next year, possibly be on Kinder or Bleaklow to see them on their way O0
-
It’s been brilliant as always. Plenty of drama and totally unpredictable. Great to follow it as a group too, support any WF members who are competing and get the inside info from those in the support team.
-
It has been a fab race this year. I've especially enjoyed Jasmin's and Shelli's journeys, both inspirational women.
I didn't get to dot watch yesterday but from the posts on here it is a shame the two Japanese racers didn't finish :(
Does anyone know why Pavel didn't enter this year?
-
Our power went off last night so I missed the end. I'm glad Satoshi made it safely to Hut 1, things didn't look too good when the lights/internet went off.
Hut 2 must be like the Tardis. It's tiny but there is a hot food, safety team and runners in there! How do they fit?
Well done to everyone involved!

Ok, I'll have to have another look. When i was following the trackers during the Monarch Way Ultra, they seemed to be following country lanes all the time and i was thinking that they are going to have big foot problems with all that tarmac.
-
Strange, our team leader said there were only advisories there based on how fast folks were moving etc
Who was your team leader?Rule 10. MONTANE Spine Race athletes must depart our Monitoring Location at Byrness within 148 hours or will be withdrawn.
This 20 hour remaining rule was introduced during the race in 2016 when I was in SST in Hut 2, after some of the faster runners were taking almost that length of time in the deep snow to get to the finish from Byrness. 8 hours were added to the original 12 hour cut off. Several runners on the route to Byrness were not aware of this change and arrived in Byrness with less than 20 hours left and were withdrawn much to their dismay.
-
END OF dav, I'm back on as Slogger. Logged out of dav and tried once more to log in as Slogger and it worked!

Welcome back Slogger, though we'll miss dav, seeme O0 d like an alright bloke.
I've really enjoyed this year's race, some very inspirational people out there.

Jasmin was on Sky News this morning and said she dosen't take any notice of the gender of the runner next to her. They are just another competitor.Personally I think the media have made too much about her being a woman and I am sure she would sooner be called an athlete rather than a nursing mother running in a race. Its not the first time that a woman has beaten men in an ultra,in fact Shelli Gordon did exactly the same thing in the hardmoors 160 in 2015.
-
While I agree with you Tony, if Eoin had beaten Eugeni and smashed the record then it would have received almost no media coverage. The thing which is perceived as being 'news worthy' is that she is a woman competing in sport against men which happens relatively rarely. Of course the press are not the only people to make a big thing out of her being female and a new mother lots of the posts on here, including some of mine, mention it.
It will be interesting to see if the Spine website is updated to have a course record and a mens record.
-
It will be interesting to see if the Spine website is updated to have a course record and a mens record.
Not a chance! It would affect revenue as most of the entrants are men.I should imagine they will come to a compromise and have a course record, men's record and women's record.............in that order. ;)
-
To be fair there was a media circus when the first men became midwives. It is just human nature to be interested when something out of the norm happens. It`s not good or bad it just is what happens. I also think that people were just so glad of a terrific human interest story after days of nothing but the` B` thing that it got everyone talking. It dosen`t really matter what or why just that it has people who had never heard of Ultra running, the Spine or the Pennine way taking an interest in something that they knew nothing about and that has to be good for everyone.
-
O0 O0 O0

+1 O0 .

I will continue to think Jasmin was incredible, it is unusual for a woman to beat a man in a physical contest. Jasmin may be used to winning races whatever the gender of the participants in the race but I am not used to seeing or reading about it. I know the conditions weren't that bad this year in regards to deep snow and this contributed to her very fast completion time but she was still 15 hours ahead of second place Eoin Keith who had similar race conditions.
With all the coverage this year in the media there might be more coverage on the telly next year? I hope so :)
-
It would be nice if more women were inspired to take part in this kind of race after Jasmin's success, as well
-
I will continue to think Jasmin was incredible, it is unusual for a woman to beat a man in a physical contest.
Absolutely - Jasmin didn't just break the record, she smashed it. An incredible achievement - and she was still smiling at the end of it.
-
There was a good interview in the weekend's i newspaper (19-20 January) - page 15 if anyone has a copy.
If not I found an on-line version here;
https://inews.co.uk/sport/jasmin-paris-interview-spine-race-breastfeeding-mum-ultra-marathon-runner/
Richard's comment about Jasmin smashing the record is of course true and the word is used in the old fashioned sense i.e. totally obliterating the previous time.
These days a lot of athletic records are 'smashed' and when you read the detail it often means fractions of a second shaved off or a similar minuscule amount: with the suspicion that attention grabbing phrases used in headlines sells papers.
But 12 hours 'smashed' is just something else. Had it not been for you guys & this post I would have missed it and boy am I glad I didn't and what a time to come in on it. Thanks all O0
I think and hope, it will be some while before that time is bettered. Mind you, jac said she had the same running shoes ..... :D

Thanks for posting the link, Innominate. Some 'kick up the bum'!

I did notice the BBC website had one article (possibly Thursday) with a photo of Jasmin sitting on a bench outside one of the pit stops * with the caption " Jasmin Paris expressing ....... " I do hope it was purely a photo of her in a normal state with reference to her expressing, rather than of her carrying out the task at the time of the photo.
If the latter, it seems a gross invasion of her privacy.
* Re: pit stops - I guess she'll be trying to get them down to around the sub 5 second mark next year (F1 style) :D
-

Yes Stube, I got it wrong. I contacted the guy who's tracker I was folloing during the MW Ultra. He sent this reply to my question about the route. Sent via messenger hence the format.
Hi Dave, Sorry for thelate reply. I remember the route as mostly canal, tracks, not that much road as far as i remember. No option to move to road, have to stay on route. It's quite an isolated route, goes near some towns and villages but then turns away before entering. The GPX file is getting better and better and the route markers and maintenance has improved.

I couldn't get as excited about the summer ones somehow. With the Spine Race, the weather is part of the story.
I did watch some of the Cape Wrath ultra last summer though, just because the scenery was so fantastic.
-
There are just so may ultra races going on throughout the year it's hard to keep up, many do include event trackers whilst on others they are optional. This year see the return of a few biannual events like the Dragons Back and Offa's Dyke. Si entries publish a list of races that include ultra events but also many other distances.Dave.
-
Thanks Dave. :)

Not entirely Spine Race related, but the post does concern Ultras and some Spine competitors. So, not long back from a week in Gran Canaria which coincided with the Transgrancanaria series of Ultra events. In fact the original reason for booking to go to GC was to enter the Transgrancanaria 'Maraton', but dodgy knee (and lack of adequate training) put paid to that one.
I did though go down to Maspalomas to see some of the finishers in the Maraton, and there were also competitors finishing the 360 race. Now this 360 race is over 264km with 13,265m of ascent and in second place was Eugeni Roselle Sole (a regular Spine competitor and previous winner) with a time of 53 hours. Pavel Paloncy was a DNF.
Damian Hall (Spine runner and past podium finisher) was in the 128km event (7,500m of ascent), as was Janson Heath, a name I recognise from years ago on oe of the walking forums that were around then (might have been this one) - finishing times of 15 hours and 19 hours respectively.
The 360 winner, Luca Papi from Italy, finished in 50 hours and after finishing went to pick up his Bib No. for the 128km race :o He took his time with this one finishing in 27 hours 8)
As a matter of interest, when reading through the publicity blurb abut the events and named runners, the Spine Race gets a mention as one of the hardest Ultras around.
Pics from the finish line in Maspalomas on February 22nd - bit different to Kirk Yetholm on a cold and wet January night.
