The hip replacement must surely be the only way forward now. I've heard many tales of walkers being very pleased with the result and getting back to serious walking again.
I've also heard from several physiotherapists that really don't recommend cortisone injections due to the severe pain that sometimes results and often their ultimate lack of efficacy.

After years of working on building sites my father in law needed to have both of his hips replaced and his recovery was amazing.

Hooray - a result - hopefully the 5 months will pass without too much pain and then all back to normal. I've several friends with replacement hips, all walkers of varying sorts and all enjoying new lease of walking life. Way to go :)
So many paths yet to walk, so little time left

Thanks everyone, very encouraging. Consultant said maybe post op that i would have to be happy to settle for 45 mile non stop rather than 100. :)

I met a guy more than halfway up Glaramara  walking with the aid of two longer than usual trekking poles.  Turned out he had had a hip replacement just 3 weeks previously.  He asked me not to tell his surgeon. Good luck  O0
