Just did one in 30 seconds, 3 pictures taken from the top of Ingleborough in November. A doddle to use.

Does anybody here use stitching software to join digital photos together to create panoramic views? I've just started using microsoft ICE (Image Composite Editor) and am impressed with how well it works.

I've taken a few panormic images myself and use Hugin (not the current version though, v0.7.0.3082). I never use a tripod, just stay in one place and take overlapping images. You generally have to crop them after they've been stitched.

After an initial play Hugin appears to do a better job. ICE seems to mis-match a lot more, regardless of settings, and in one case couldn't stitch images at all. That said it is beta, so why not try both and see which looks better. Afterall they both cost nothing.

A couple of samples below. Obviously these images are greatly reduced in resolution.

MS ICE. Thirlmere from Helvellyn/ ICE couldn't match all images. So Hugin shows the full panorama.

Hugin Version

MS ICE. Swirall to Striding Egde

Hugin Version

Both have been colour corrected / balanced.

Still another new program to play with!

Nice one, it's great to see the photos all together to create one big scene isn't it? You suddenly see the view as you remember it, like putting pieces of a jigsaw together.

Thanks everyone for the advice and comments O0  It appears this technology has been about for a few years but it's new to me and I'm like a kid in a sweet shop. I've always been a few years behind though when it comes to technology.

A couple of tips, use your camera in portrait mode rather than landscape, will give you a bit more height in the final pano. Also try and over lap your photo's by at least 30% but I find 50% is better.

Excellent suggestion Gary. Though taking that many shots will only annoy the people I walk with. Oh well  ;)

Great pictures Dazza, will have to give the Hugin one a go too. I prefer the ICE shot on the Thrilmere photo only becasue it appears more vibrant and the hugin one looks a little over exposed, but maybe that isn't to do with the program itself. The ICE progam hasn't stitched the Stiding edge shot together well though has it. I guess it's trial and error.

The reason I was thinking a tripod might be a good idea is so that everything is at exactly the same level/angle and the foreground might match better and possibly require less cropping.

@cragster

ICE actually created two panoramas from the same set of photos. One very washed out and short, one very vibrant. The hugin one is more like the actual conditions on the day.

They're both free and will give different results depending on your photos. So try both. Whilst you wait for them to process - pour a beer! Win win I say.

@amneisacjimmy
And anyone else I suppose.

The best panorama I've ever stiched.

The forum can't host it, and it won't print on canvas (it'd be 6ft by 18") for a sane amount of cash.

This is a direct download of Inominate Tarn. Almost all of it, but massively reduced. Created using Hugin.

You'll have to zoom in to see it properly.

There's a local company that may do it but it'll be expensive I reckon. Though there are others I might have done instead. I still have some panoramas to stich just never seem to get round to it.

Following are some of my best Panoramic shots at full resolution. If you do have them printed on to canvas or whatever I'd be interested to know how they turn out. I'm not a professional (many on here are much better - Granty and GaryR to name but two) but I'd prefer these aren't used commercially without asking me first.

Full fat Panoramas. Note these images will be several meg in size to download (no more than 2mb though due to photobucket).

Approaching Magpie Mine. Original 4525x1333 3.7Mb

Actually not as full fat as intended. Photobucket can't manage them so it reduces the size. So I suppose if you do want an image to print, PM me and I'll see what we can do.

I'll update the other post with the original sizes.

Hi all,
Excellent photos, thank you. O0
I don’t pretend to know that much about taking photos but I have a good mate who is a fanatic.
When this subject came up, he gave me a good tip which is:-
If you have the options take the camera setting off auto and shoot with it on manual,
That way the camera won’t automatically adjust to the different light settings as you scroll round so you don’t get the different light / colours as the photos go from full exposure to the sun to nothing (depending on where the sun is when shooting)

He also has an absolutely stunning panoramic on his wall, its split into 3 panels,
He got it done on line from here link:-

http://www.canvas101.co.uk/

Don’t know the price, but did it all on line, downloaded the finished photo, picked the sizes and material, and then presto, it was delivered the next day.

I have a couple of really good panoramic that I will get done the next time we decorate (ugh) :( downstairs.

Also switch your camera's White Balance from Auto to Cloudy to stop the camera changing the colours. Cloudy tends to give the best compromise and colour is easily corrected.
If you shoot in RAW it doesn't matter.
