Title: Duke of Edinburgh route near Wetton
Post by: DrPips on 18:09:21, 28/02/12
Hi All,

I'm running D of E for the first time this year, and want to take kids out into the White Peak (restrictions on Dark Peak  :-[ )  I've got one route in mind for them starting at Tissington camping at Wetton and 2nd day walking out to Crowdicote.  I know the camp site in Wetton, and as this is going to be a regular thing, want to get in with a camp site and carry on using them.  Can anyone recommend another good route suitable for D of E that would also have Wetton as it's mid point (ish)

Thanks,

Dom

My advice would be to contact the Peak Expedition Network here - http://www.dofe.org/en/content/cms/leaders/expedition-areas/peak-district/ (http://www.dofe.org/en/content/cms/leaders/expedition-areas/peak-district/) - they may have a shedload of info to help you out.

I'm a little familiar with the area, but I'm sure some of the peaks experts on here will sort you out (pssst ask Sunnydale she'll know  ;) )

Dom,
A number questions:
What is the age range?
How far would you plan to walk in a day?
How strenuous?

Living in Milldale I see lots of knackered D of E's, overladen and bedraggled!

Hi Noel,

All the kids are 14.  Need to start them as young as possible so we have the possibility of doing Bronze and Silver with them.  The restrictions on the expeditions have changed since I did it.  It used to be 12 miles per day, but they've changed it to 6 hours per day.  This is to allow access to the award for people with disabilities.  So in terms of distance, looking at around 10 miles per day.

Oh, and knackered and bedraggled is what I'm aiming for!!  ;D

I have a few routes in mind some more strenuous than others, taking them on paths that minimise the use of popular trails.  Do you have a GPS device?  If so I can supply the routes in a GPX format.

Hi Noel,

I don't have GPS, but I do use a route planner that uses GPX files.  That would be great.

OK, give me a few days and I will sort something out.

Change of plan, we're camping at Hulme End now.  I've attached one walk that I intend to do as one day of an expedition.

Thanks for that.  I have wasted some time devising routes for your group based on Wetton, at the centre.  Given that you have changed your base, and have other routes in mind, I suggest that you sort routes for yourself, assuming that you are a qualified walk leader?

Sorry for messing you around.  I've not been able to get hold of the campsite in Wetton, never answers the phone so I've had to change our base.  Apologies for any inconvenience or wasted time.

Sorry for my comment - it has been a long week!  :-[  Have you booked the Hulme End site?  If so, I'll sort some routes centred around Hulme End.  Actually, the Hulme End base enables some more interesting options!  ;)

Not a problem, I appreciate it's annoying to waste time on things.  Always a bit of a chicken and egg thing to decide what to do first with these sorts of things, and if people don't answer the phone, then it makes things awkward!  The campsite at Hulme End looks spot on as well, and only 100 yards from the pub....if the kids go to sleep early...fat chance!

Highly unlikely that you will get to The Manifold!  However, I will plan some interesting routes, and get back over the weekend.  Would you PM with an email address for me to send GPS routes.

Hello,
I also run D of E at my school (in Derby)
Do you by any chance still have a copy of the routes that you planned Noel?
I would be very interested as I am in the process of trying to find a new route for our 2 day expedition.
Thank you
Alex

No idea whereabouts Wetton is, but recently stayed at the Roaches bunkhouse and there were numerous DofE groups camping just up the road from there, so might be somewhere useful to you.

Isn't the campsite closed?  Was last time I went through.  The farm looked empty?.

Having just made some phone calls, sadly the owner passed away, so it is now closed.
I have had a llo and there are 2 alternitive campsites, Mill Farm at Thorpe (near the enterence to Dovedale car park) or at he top end, Holme end.
Any experience of these sites?

Hi Alex.  If you have a look at the Leaden Boot Challenge website (leadenboot.org.uk) you will find a link to our route description.  Although ii is a marathon length route, it can be spilt into smaller sections and linking it to wherever you are staying.  The LBC route has several campsites nearby, some of which are used for DoE.  Get back to me if you need further assistance.

There's quite a lot of campsites in the White Peak used for DoE. The one that comes my notice is Mandale Farm, a mile or so east of Monyash.

But I'm sure there's quite a few more with equally good recommendations.
