As the weather has been so dismal here in recent weeks, I was really pleased when I read yesterday's forecast of dry weather with decent visibility. Having walked the far eastern Mournes on my last walk I decided to walk the western Mournes this time. With the highest mountain in cloud, I opted for two lower summits of Slievenamiskan and Hen. Starting from Rocky river car park I headed straight into the valley before climbing grassy slopes onto Slievenamiskan. After admiring views into Spelga reservoir I descended the western slopes in the direction of Hen mountain, the final peak of the day. Hen mountain is probably the easiest mountain in the Mournes to climb. From the car park to the summit can be done in half an hour. I descended back to the path which led to the car park. Total distance was 6km taking two hours.
