Yes, I agree Snowman, my comments were to the thread generally, not a question to the last (your) post specifically.
Anyway, I can empathise with your boggy walks totally, one in particular springs to mind - walking the length of Glen Sligachan on Skye on the wrong side of the river with no path - leaping from tussock to tussock to avoid going knee-deep into the morass - I did miss some gaiters very much that day! Waders might have been better though!

I also have a pair or two . one pair lives in the bottom of my rucksack rather an old tatty pair and the others fix onto my boots which are hard to get off so live on them most of the winter and only come off when all chance of wet waling has passed

i allways tend to carry my gaiters with me, they where one of the best buys i made last year and and have a lot of things going for them. i allways use them in light rain instead of my overtrousers as it tends to be the bottom of your legs that get most of the rain. and also it keeps the mud and dirt of the bottom of your trousers and as you properly no its a bad thing to keep washing your trousers all the time and nikwax tech wash ain't cheap.

Have to say I never even owned a pair until I started hill walking in scotland. It was then that I really started to appreciate there value. Since then I have I learned to appreciate them on on a few levels. For example in soft snow conditions where the snow can be above boot levels and very quicky seep into the boots. They also have a warming advantage in such conditions (I suffer from cold feet as it is).

On a preditably warm/dry day I leave them off but I do appteciate there usefulness and I would not be without them now.

I always take my gaiters when on walks but never wear them lol, im sure they have some sort of use.

I would say the best use if for walking though long wet grass, if you dont want to wear waterproof pants.

Last time we went out.  We saw some walker walking around a town wearing them.  Now that's sad i for one thought they forgot to take them off.  once they finished.

I started wearing gaiters on my typical field, meadow, high grass rural walks when I got fed up of damp trouser bottoms spattered in mud. I don't think they're a fashion accessory.

Only point I'd make is: always buy a breathable gaiter, Goretex or the like. I made the mistake of buying cheap non-breathable gaiters in the first instance and they were very uncomfortable due to the condensation and heat generated. I now have an excellent pair of Goretex gaiters for the wet fields.

yeah, gaiters are very useful.  My mate had a pair of knee high gortex ones that fitted to the sole of his boot.  It was a nightmare to get them on, but once it was done he could wander through streams/wet heather and muddy tracks and remain dry.

I had a pair many years ago that used to fasten under the instep of the boot. I found that in snow this used to make a "build-up" so have never bothered since.

Always check the fit carefully. One pair i  had came free with some boots, and i didn't bother the try them, one of the plastic adjusters  ended up sitting on my ankle. I Slipped off a stone and took a wedge of skin off.

Personally i have always considered gaiters as a 'specialist' item. they have come out of my bag on a few occasions for specific obstacles, when crossing deep streams or shallow rivers for example. but they are quickly removed once they are not needed.

I Don't get the whole fasion thing, all the walking gear doesn't look attractive.

O0  i have and wear gaiters more or less everytime i go trekking as they do what they say on the tin, hahaha, but seriously they do stop bits of stuff getting down your boots and to be honest theirs nowt worse than stopping to un tie and take off your boots to shake a small stone or something out especially when your on one, my gaiters are the ankle version, ive recently bort a new pair trekmates grassmere/gortex,as im really just getting back into walking again.

O0 i totally agree, theres a time and place for all equipment, apart from the clothes you have to be in them, but yeh ive even seen walkers round windermere with their walking poles using them hahaha, i use poles when I'm struggling abit but cant say ive ever struggled round town hahaha.

this question is forever popping up.
i can see your point.... its aimed at the "all the gear and no idea" crew......
but my opinions is that if you cant appreciate their benefits as a seriously usefull bit of kit, in the appropriate  conditions, then you have obviously never strayed from the beaten path and ventured out into the wilds..... or 0nly walk on  sunny dry sunday afternoons.

water, ticks, twigs, stones, sand, forest floor mud, snow, bracken  etc etc etc... and keeps the trouser clean for pint in any pub you pass.....
next you'll be saying gloves are for girls too....

I walk with my feet at 10-2, if I dont wear gaiters the bottom of my pants get covered in mud even on the easiest routes, paid a little bit extra for the gortex type but they seem worth it,
