Title: Signs that made me chuckle
Post by: MarkT on 17:58:08, 02/07/18
Walked another section of the Essex Way today, Horksley Heath to Coggeshall.  I have to say not the most interesting of walks but 2 signs I spotted did make me laugh and ponder.

First of all I had to be wary of very young drivers but no advice for us older people :) :) :)

And further up the same road I bumped into a very friendly and helpful farmer but one of his signs was a bit concerning, for those who don't abide by the rules.

You have been warned :)

For those using the trains to get out on the fells - beware.

And, if you get in trouble - here is the solution :

Seen on one of my West Highland Way walks, we have clever horses in the Highlands that can read....AND close gates  O0

Haha, love finding weird and wonderful signs.  This one outside a local pub says "free air guitar with each pint".  Mighty generous of them is that  :D

And a sign in someone's back garden in Kilham, E.Yorks.

I'd be inclined to put a sign pointing the other way underneath the "Corvette" sign - saying "Ford Cortina"   :D

... .go on MarkT.... you know you want to  ;D

Just North of Lincoln - there must be 'heavy spitters' in the area if they need to warn motorists.

For some reason the pic isn't showing AdeE but, if it's where I think it is, I'm pretty certain I drove through it on the A15 the other weekend  :)

Edit: Pic's showing now and yes, I did!

If there is only one sign, this is the lady who owns the house. Vintage Vixen is a blogger, in the West Midlands I believe. Her business is selling anything vintage.

Hi Ilona, the house was, if my memory's correct, in Southerness on the Solway coast.

Mel, no, I walked on....

I did a 6 mile walk around Belbroughton village today. It took a half hour longer than expected as there were around 6 of these signs which I studiously read....(http://walkingforum.co.uk/Smileys/alive/shocked.gif)(http://i67.tinypic.com/b6va0y.jpg)

Looks like the Worcestershire CC have air brushed out the nazi symbols and saved the text, because they are short of compositors.
I have to wonder where the horse riders are allowed, there are rights of way that they can use. If this is the tone of hospitality in that county and the direction it is moving then this is a sign that screams "We need the Scottish Land Reform Act in England's green and pleasant land".
And should we be asking, "Did those feet in ancient times be needy of a right of way"

I have to add though that the stiles gates and bridges are in excellent condition, at least those I accessed yesterday. The signs however just look a tad incongruous and are placed so you almost have to brush shoulders with them just to walk forwards.

When I got fiercely verbally abused, whilst squarely on a right of way, above Tregarron, I carried along my rightful way, with the landowners curses ringing in my ears and the all the gates on his land were well hung, latches worked perfectly, all oiled and in perfect conditioned. It was the occasion that first alerted me to be suspicious of the underlying hostility that was growing in the countryside.

3 decades earlier I would have been selling livestock to his father or other relatives in Welshpool Livestock auction, that was when I started to read the articles the landowners write that do not get onto the public platform.

The other curious thing was that good money had been spent on these signs but no where at this point (where this photo was taken) could I see a directional arrow to show me the footpath. I hesitated for a minute or two trying to figure out which side of a new fence I should be on..I had to double check the OS map.

I suspect that is a landowner's sign rarther than a Council Sign which tend to have a logo on them and the telephone number or web address of the Worcester Council would have been given.

I believe you are so right..On reading it again, It mentions WCC but doesn`t state it is posted by them.

It's one thing to put up a polite notice, and another to put up something that pretends to be official.
Make sure you deface it with a nice hard boot mark the next time you pass that way.

I might see if I can get hold of some of these..     https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/153215862440?chn=ps (https://www.ebay.co.uk/i/153215862440?chn=ps...............Blimey) they are pricey though..I would glue them to the front of the sign somewhere.

The sign is a fake as these are the correct rules regarding dogs on Public Rights of Way.
A dog does not have to be on a lead.

Do’s and Don'ts of Public Rights of Way

DosThis public right of way is meant for pedestrians only. You are allowed to walk your dog as long as it is under your close control. When walking a dog, you must ensure that it keeps to the public footpath and does not trespass into nearby properties. Prams, pushchair or wheelchairs can also be used on a footpath.

Returning to the OP, this sign was outside a sawmill I passed during yesterday's walk in the Chilterns:

I think there's a clue in that Worcester County Council doesn't exist. It's Worcestershire County Council.

I heard about this one rather than witnessing it myself. An outdoor shop called Richards of York had a sign in the window that read:

'Now is the winter of our discount tents'

I so want that to be true.
