19th September Ravenglass to Keswick day three
« on: 21:09:36, 22/09/20 »
Unsurprisingly after yesterdays exertions I slept pretty soundly, it was noticeably cooler though so the tent door were closed but I set my alarm so I wouldn't sleep through the sunrise
And it was a lovely sunrise.
My pitch with Great End, Esk Pike and Bowfell in the background.
I climbed to the top of Grey Knotts just as the sun lit up the High Stile ridge and Pillar.
Looking down the steep direct descent to Honister. On the way down I bumped into my walking pal Rod, who was out for a day around Great Gable and Kirk Fell. The steep climb to Dale Head awaits me but after yesterday this or any of the climbs today  didn't worry me in the slightest.
After a second breakfast of a bacon barm from the slate mine cafe I started the long pull to Dale Head, the views over open up as you climb With Scafell Pike in the right background, then Great End with Base Brown in front then Esk Pike, Bowfell Allen Crags and Glaramara.
.
Once at the top you are treated to the lovely view of the High Spy/Maiden Moor ridge above Newlands with Skiddaw and Blencathra in the background..
Another steep descent, this time to Dalehead Tarn.
The coolness of yesterday evening has gone now so it's a warm climb back up to High Spy.
Dale Head and the connecting ridge to Hindscarth seen from the abrupt cliff edge on High Spy.
Skiddaw again seen across the rugged and rough ground between High Spy and Maiden Moor. The people count was increasing now the closer I got to Catbells.
Maiden Moor and the first sight of Derwentwater.
And more of Derwentwater seen from the descent to Hause gate.
When planning my walk I realised that I would be climbing over Catbells on Saturday afternoon so would probably have company. I was not disappointed.
Lovely Newlands with Causey Pike and the Newlands fells above.
From Catbells I followed the Cumbria way through to Portinscale and then Keswick, passing Nichol Marina with Latrigg in the background on the way.
My route today was -
Grey Knotts - Honister - Dale Head - Dalehead Tarn - High Spy - Maiden Moor - Hause Gate - Catbells - Fawe Park - Portinscale - Keswick. ( about 9 miles 2500 ft ascent )

For some reason I can no longer see your photos, Karl.   :(
Can see photos in other people's reports, including my own.

Edit - I've lost them on Chrome, but can see them using Microsoft Edge. ???

Glad you enjoyed the pics April. O0
Much as I'd like to take credit I'm sure hundreds of people have walked from Ravenglass to Keswick by that route as it seems such a natural way to go  :)

Yet another great day. High Spy is a stunning fell - the views back to Dale Head and down into Newlands are something special.

What an amazing route and walk that you have created. Pretty sure you've got the FKT for it!

I should have set up one of those dot watching gizmos, although I think everyone would think it was broken as it moved so slowly  ;D
