OK, someone has to do it, so here goes. I've started this thread as a continuation of Ridge's

A thousand is a decent target, Jac. In fact, anything is, as long as it poses a challenge.

I didn't have a target last year. This year I'm going to try to do 20 miles per week. I've not started as yet

If you are using a fitbit to record your mileage it will put another half mile on while you are bending your elbow in the pub.

Indeed
- much better to use a map. Only a GPS tracker stands any chance of giving a sensible reading.

I have found this not to be always right. When I recorded routes on my old tablet with Viewranger I found the mileage count to be quite accurate, double checking it with what Mr Wainwright said and me using my trusty bit of string and paper map. On my new tablet, even though I have the same settings as I did on my old tablet it doesn't record the mileage properly, the total is always about 10% less than it should be. So in short, I think it must depend on the device you are using.

If I want to be as accurate as possible, I use the 'Measure Distance' feature on Bing Maps.
