If I want to be as accurate as possible, I use the 'Measure Distance' feature on Bing Maps.

So do I. Though, when compared with various GPS measurements from others in the walking group the Bing distance is always a  bit shorter. However, as none of the GPSs seem to agree anyway I'm happy with Bing.
So many paths yet to walk, so little time left

Are only including walks, or general day to day walking like back and for work?

Any miles that you do count, whether it’s a walk to work or a longer day walk.

I always thought it was for walks we've done. If it was general walking the mileage would be considerably more.

If we start counting any miles walked, that means I will have to work out my mileage every time I leave home. As I have retired I spend a lot of time around town shopping etc. It has to be day walks or a circuit that you may do on a regular basis or it means nothing. Does anyone else share my view?.

The one thing it isn't is a competition, it is to log your progress and to encourage each other.
So you can set your own target and decide for your self if that is every step you take or only yomping over trackless moorland.

When I joined the forum I thought it was aimed at like minded people that enjoy walking & backpacking the open countryside & trails. I'm sure if I post how many miles I have walked to Aldi & back each week not too many people would be interested.

They certainly wouldn't be interested in photos and a trip report  ;D  but neither are there many rules on the forum, it is up to you what you consider a 'proper' walk.

Mountain......molehill  ::)

At the end of the day, does it matter? Someone might do a half mile walk in the dark after work and someone might walk the same distance to the shop or to work, it’s still a walk.

As has been said, it’s not a competition so log what you consider to be a walk, whatever the distance.  O0

I never thought of it as a competition, just a record of people's mileage walking trails etc. Most of us have to walk during our everyday lives beit shopping or work. The idea of the Miles in 2019 seems to suggest totals achieved walking for pleasure, not nessesity. After this I really give up trying to explain myself. Perhaps a total for pleasure & a total for shopping & work would please all.
