Multifunction or single blade?
« on: 12:51:43, 22/07/19 »
I have been asked what I would like for my birthday.
New multifunction tool or single fixed blade knife???
I am leaning toward fixed blade.
Opinions please?

Opinel number 8.Single blade.
Light as a feather.Sturdy as an oxen.Sharp as something which is extremly sharp and keeps it's edge.
Too little, too late, too bad......

I  carry a Leatherman Juice when backpacking.
It is relatively light and has all the tools I might need

A leatherman would be rather nice.
Their not cheap, but blimey their handy items, and beautifully made, so i recon its money well spent.
Its not like blowing money on a gimmicky gadget, that seemed like a good purchase, but collects dust in a draw.

Like the Swiss Army knives, Leatherman have multiple uses.

Indeed ... or in a cupboard  ;)

For hiking I carry an Opinel wood handled folding knife in my pack. Useful for cutting string, cheese and sausage.  The blade locks out and is probably a tad long for the old bill's liking.
For skiing I have a Leatherman multi-tool in a pouch on my salopettes.  Useful for cutting string and fixing bindings.  Not that great with cheese or sausage though - blade is too short.

If you want a single blade Opinel are cheap, light and isn't the end of the world if you lose one.   No 5 if you want it for slicing food etc and the No 8 or 9 if you want a 'proper' knife you can use for prepping materials other than soft cheese.

Failing that the Leatherman Squirt is excellent, light and versatile, and the Leatherman Style CS is a simple scissors and knife combo which is, in fairness, 90% of what I ever use it for.

Thanks all for your ideas.

UPDATE

I (OH if I'm being honest) have just found my old Gerber Multitool, I broke the blade on it several years ago and had assumed I had binned it. Whilst discussing your ideas with OH she produced the Gerber and enquired if it could be fixed.

So I have decided to buy a fixed blade knife to complement the broken bladed Gerber.

FURTHER UPDATE

Just spoken to Fiskars (Gerber in UK) who have told me the blade may still be covered by it's 25 year warranty! Happy days.

Cheers once again.

What a result!
Fiskars are unable to replace the blade on my old Gerber multitool.
So they are replacing the whole tool under warranty!!!!!
I cannot praise this company highly enough, no quibbles just great communication and customer service.
Now I can stop looking.
Cheers everyone for your input.

 O0 great service!

For short trips I just take a very small and ancient pipe cleaning pen knife, for opening packets, cutting cheese etc.
