West Highland Way
« on: 17:50:27, 29/12/16 »
Well that's the West Highland Way arranged for our LD walk this coming year. Planned for the first week in May.
Long daylight days and no midges! First stop after leaving Mingavie will be Glengoyne distillery..............their 15 year old is perfection in a bottle! Four of us on tour............May seems a long time away!

I really enjoyed the West Highland way when I did it last February. Definitely no midges then but plenty of snow.

I think it was may when I did it, well part of it. They closed Ranoch moor due to heavy snow.

Have had to shift my dates. Now 11 to 21 May (including flights). Are midges likely during this period?

Well the thought used to be that midge season begins towards the end of May. However the little blighters in recent years seem to be extending their activity. A lot depends on the weather too, they love quiet damp morning and evenings in particular, but they hate the wind.
When we get ready early morning after parking up or clambering out of our tents, we try to keep on the move as much as possible, as they target you immediately you stand still. they are usually not a problem once you are walking as they don't like going far, tending to swarm around and stay together. The worse ones are really minute, barely a couple of millimetres and more like a gas than a swarm of flies.

Slogger, you're right with regards to keep moving.........they won't bother you when you are walking.
Midgies are also territorial..........they keep to their own space. Very nutritious for you too!

Done it twice. Once in heavy rain and once in heavy snow - both times in May - no Midges except the one I took with me.
