Trying very hard not to buy a Suunto Ambit 3 Peak

After a long, hard, valiant battle I must report a failure  ::)   Next up a new pair of boots.
I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake.

Last month I got myself a new pair of Salomon X Ultra Mid 2 GTX Men's Hiking Boots - they were a birthday gift as well as necessity as I kept falling over in my Hi-Tec Men's Eurotrek Waterproof Hiking Boots. I've still not worn them  :-\  But hopefully they'll get an airing this weekend with a Ramblers' trip to Arnside - although exactly where we're going is beyond me  :D

Ok so not exactly a "kit" purchase but have just booked a place on a supported West to East crossing (traditional) Lyke Wake Walk in April.

Pair of Paramo velez trousers.
Got £50 towards them by recycling the old pair which were falling to bits, between thorns, fences and tripping
over a couple of times, once on that endless (and stony) road to Garrigill off Cross Fell.
Even more satisfying, the new ones are a size smaller!

Not strictly a purchase but an Aquapac for my phone FOC from Aquapac to help support my Pennine Way walk when I'm also trying to raise money for our SAR Team

Well, having purchased some Salomon x-ultras not too long ago I have given up on them as walking shoes for me. They are extremely comfortable around the house and for short walks but after about six miles my feet seem to be in a vice across the wide part of my foot across the toes and  my toes are jamming up against each other. So not too good for long distances. Went into a couple of specialist shops in Lincoln today and ended up (again) in Blacks where their trained fitter had me on the measure and after heaping praise on my Salomons then showed me the problem, he actually put the sole of the Salomans over the sole of another make and they were visually narrower. So I purchased some North face Hedgehogs Fastpack GTX. This has got to be my last purchase this year. (Merrels, no more given away, Salomons , keep for going down the street.) I still use my North Face Boots and have to say they are the most comfortable pair of footwear I have ever owned, just fancied some shoes for the Camino., since it is mainly on hard track and road.
Too little, too late, too bad......

New boots bought, plumped for some old favourites, a pair of Salomon Quest 4D 2 GTX and also thought I'd try a  pair of Mammut Mercury Advanced High II GTX.  It's been an expensive month :(

Just bought Mrs Ninthace some gaiters of her very own, my cast off Peter Storms were not cutting the mustard for her any more! Surprised that none of the Rab, Berghaus or Montane gaiters on offer in Go had zips. Good job we took her boots to try them on with as only the Berghaus GTX had hooks that could cope with the laces on her Altbergs. The hook on the Rab Latoks was way too narrow to engage the lace (as well as being the wrong way up for ease of attachment/detachment IMHO). The hook on the Montanes was attached by a flimsy looking strap and was a struggle to hook onto her laces. We considered the Trekmates which had a decent hook and a zip but recent reviews of them have not been great. The Higear gaiters were a non starter in terms of quality and durability.

I have these and you're quite right, I'm used to them now but they are a bit of a pain to get on, not sure why Rab do them that way  :-\

the 'upside-down' type hooks tend to stay in place better. Easiest way is to attach the hook under the lace before doing anything else, then fasten the front of the gaiter as normal.

Yep, that's how I do them but still a tad more difficult than my others that have the hook 'the right way around'.  Get your point about staying in place better though, my Rabs have never 'unhooked' themselves  O0

My latest walking kit purchase actually became a non-purchase! I was going to buy a Lowe Alpine warm hat (goes over the ears) in a Cotswold shop today, its the one with a short peak rather than the longer one, as on the Paramo version. I tried it on, looked in the mirror and thought that my face looked like a football with a nose poking out! I glanced to my left, there was a mum nearby looking the other way but her little 4-5yr old daughter was standing there laughing at me! I didn't buy it. I'll carry on looking at other brands before I decide for sure.

My own Rab gaiters have hooks the "right" way up. Never had any trouble with them unhooking either. I was very surprised that I could not get the circular section bootlace through the hook aperture. Had I succeeded there is an interior lip to prevent the lace coming out again. Must be a real faff to get the gaiters off again and thoroughly unpleasant if you have been through a lot of mud.

And an airing is what they got :) And these were without doubt the least uncomfortable thing that I have ever had on my feet. A great bit of intuitive buying on my behalf  ;D
