I have a 25l backpack and used to have a 2 litre Platypus which I filled about 2/3rds full.

I threw it though, as it started to look a weird colour and the water tasted less than great. It also took nearly a year of use to get rid of that new plastic taste. I've gone back to stainless steel water bottles and couldn't be happier. I wouldn't recommend Platypus on personal experience.

Always went with Camelbak for years as a mountain biker but recently got a 3L Osprey bladder and am very impressed, better than Camelbak in my opinion especially the opening system as the large 'porthole' in the Camelbak isn't easy to get into to clean. The Ospreys slide open top does allow easier access and the bite valve is better too. I have it filled to about 2.5L in a 35L Vango Boulder.

Would recommend.

+1 for Camelbak.

I have a 2 litre one for about 8 years. I never cleaned or sterilised it. The water still tastes perfect. I've seen friends throw away inferior ones because of horrible looking mildew/fungus inside. A lot of people complain about a plasticky taste from the water from inferior ones including, I think, Platypus.

It came in it's own outer sack with lots of straps and fastners which I think enable it to be attached to the outside of a backpack if space is at a premium inside. Never tried this.

I think it's called UnBottle.

Is it this one?

First one I had was a Platypus which was ok but not as good as the Camelbaks I've had since. Better bite valve, push fit hose and wide fill neck. US army use them I think.
Only place I've seen mould in the Camel was in the bite valve which turned black and was nigh impossible to clean out.
Maintenance is periodic soak with Steradent tablet. No side effects yet....!
Great forum, loads of good reading...
