Title: The Spine Race2018 - List of competitors
Post by: harland on 20:39:04, 12/12/17
See the following.  I see that Pavel is in again as well as Eoin Keith and Tom Hollins - last years 1st male.  I wonder if Pavel is "just" going for the win this year or to set a new record - or both.  Looks very competitive again!

https://thespinerace.com/rosters/

Carol Morgan, last years 1st female is also in again.  Good luck to all and great respect to all for taking up this challenge.

No Dixie this year?

If I remember correctly, were the rules going to be amended for this year so that people would only be "supported" at the check points and nowhere else? I seem to remember the winner last year being supported so this should make things a bit more even. A few familiar names.

No supported racers this year, wonder how that will affect Tom Hollins?

Lots of UK competitors as you would expect but 1 from Indonesia. He may be a random person that I choose to follow.

Next years race might be the toughest since 2013.The long range forecast is for a very cold January.
Title: Re: The Spine Race2018 - List of competitors
Post by: Slogger on 18:59:14, 15/12/17
It should be a very competitive race at the sharp end.
Tom Hollins, Pavel Paloncy, Eon Keith, Eugenie Rossell, Carol Morgan and Dragons Back & recent Cheviot Goat Ultra winner Jim Mann. I think Jim is going to take some beating. Another one to watch and previous Spine competitor and going even stronger this year is Offa's Dyke Ultra winner Greg Crowley, Tom Hollins came a few hours second.
I am race number 176 and just hoping to finish so I wont be seeing any of the above after the start.
Cold is good and preferable to wet, the worst is cold and wet.
There is already a short detour on Kinder Scout taking us more to the left (West) avoiding the more boggy area.
There is also likely to be more diversions avoiding very wet farmers fields (complaints this year) in certain places before Malham, especially approaching Gargrave.
Its certainly a different race compared to the early 3 years (2012, 2013, 2014) with intermediate CP's and cafes etc opening up for 3 days solid day and night especially for runners. I aim to try and avoid using them, going back to my similar tactics of 2014.
It is unsupported for everyone and how Ive always done it, however with the above there is extra 'official' support.

Good luck Dave.  I'm sure as before they'll be many here watching your progress with interest.  How the hell you guys manage it I don't know, I was pretty much wiped out having taken just over 14 days this year in relatively good weather  O0

My money is on Eoin, provided he dosen't fall over again. He ran the entire length of Ireland last May in record breaking time, something like 300 miles in three days. :o

Thanks for the best wishes. Training as such hasn't happened, in fact not done much at all this year. I had a failed attempt at a non stop Dales Way, but still managed 65 miles in 23 hours, a failed Offa's Dyke Ultra managing 70 miles in 25 hours then carried after a rest with a 38 miles in around 15 hours. A few 25 milers and many 4 and 5 milers. That spread over the last year, not done anything for a couple of weeks, been too busy with work and too knacked to train afterwards.
3/4 stone above my 'fighting' weight and failing at shedding any of it, so going to do the marathon last 7 days diet, that I used to do before road marathons and hopefully get rid of a few pounds.
Injuries have again gone from one to the other without any of them clearing completely, but I won't bore you with them and just hope for the best.
This is most likely going to be my last competitive event, but I will still continue to attempt my own non stoppers like I always have done.
Slowing down, I am, it has taken me a long time to accept that fact, but things are definitely becoming harder and harder as I try to continue being as active as possible.
Don't expect me to be anywhere other than near the back of the field, especially during the early miles of stage one. Hopefully I will be able to use my experience to work my way through. My target for CP1 will be sub 18 hours and if I get to CP2 Hawes inside of 55 hours after having some reasonable sleep, I will be going well. CP1 in more than 19 hours and CP2 Hawes outside of 56 hours and I will be struggling.
Unlike this year I won't be having around 6 pints of Guinness in the Ramblers followed by around 6 bottles of beer back at the YHA the night before, missing my alarm, waking up 15 minutes before the time I was picking the other Chorley lads up, to take them to the start. No time for foot preparation, absolutely dehydrated with a slight hangover! Talk about taking it seriously!

Cheers!
tonyk, yes I am the oldest git again! Trying once more to set an all time over 70's FKT (Fastest Known {verified}Time) In fact as far as I am aware there has only ever been one other over 60's starter for the Winter Spine. That was in 2015, he was 64 years and did finish (with some assistance) however that race was officially put down as an exception, as due to strong winds, Pen Y Ghent, and Cross Fell were diverted around and the Holds at two CP's were that long it became a stage race  with everyone re-starting at the same time when released.
Another 71 year old started the Summer Spine Fusion but was tailed off that much he stopped around Thornton, before Gargrave.
Hopefully as years go by more over 60's will have a crack.

Dave, there was a guy in the 2013 race who was 73 but from what I can recall he didn't make CP1,retired somewhere near Harrop Dale.

Red jacket and blue pack on the right.Perhaps you remember him as it was a small field,at least compared to the size of the field over the last few years.

Thanks for the best wishes everyone, much appreciated. I have decided that I will try and raise some funds for Prostrate cancer research, following the recent passing of my brother in law and the fact that the guy who gave up his place in the Spine race for me, has in the last few months been diagnosed, operated on and been given the all clear but still receiving after care treatment for Prostrate cancer.
Tonyk, Yes I know the guy he was in fact 68 years, a member of the LDWA. Some time later he asked me if Id like to partner in long distance events, I agreed but have not heard from him since.

Very excited to follow this year's race and good luck to Dave.

One interesting development this year is the number of runners from this year's and last year's Tor des Geants (also sponsored by Montane). The 2016 winner (Oliviero Bosatelli)is running, and there are a couple of women (Daphne Derouche and Harrier Kjaer) who were in the top 20 females in the 2017 race. Will be really interesting to see how they fare against runners who have more experience of Pennine Way type conditions!

I'll be cheering on Jim Mann and Carol Morgan though :)

Extremely tempted to go to the start on sunday, has anyone any experience of going and is it a mare to park? Also how long will it take them to get to snake pass? Fancy going up devils dike for a watch on some technical muddy sections and wondered roughly how long a wait i'd have!  O0

Well the challenger race is underway and they are starting to spread out, Jacobs Ladder will stretch out a few more!  It is a good idea to start the two races a day apart but I would have liked the Main race to start first and see whether any of the Challengers could have caught up before they reached Hardraw.

Does anyone know why the Challenger finish has been moved to Hardraw this year?
And I wonder if this means that the Hawes CP has been moved to Hardraw too...
Title: Re: The Spine Race2018 - List of competitors
Post by: harland on 08:56:06, 13/01/18
Not sure why they have moved the Challenger finish but perhaps it is the amount of room required to accommodate both races.  The Hawes CP for the full Spiners remains at Hawes, from their website:-

"Fields and lanes have to be navigated on the edge of Hawes, then (for full Spiners) a sprint down the high street, west, towards CP2 at the YHA.  Spine Challengers have another 2km to the finish in Hardraw. Cross the high street and follow markers on some short road sections and through fields, to the race finish in tiny Hardraw."

No experience with the parking on race day but it should take the leaders around 2 hours to reach the snake road. The Challenger started around an hour ago and the leaders are now close to Mill Hill (0920).

That is about 62 miles from the start so I guess they will be there very late this evening if averaging 4 mph.  However the winner last year took 28 hours to get to Hawes i.e. 106 miles so you may be spending the night up there however, from memory, the conditions were particularly bad last year.  So keep a look out on the tracker nearer the time.

Either the route has eased or they have sped up (or I calculated wrongly last time) but I make it that they are going at over 5mph.  Just over 28 miles in 5 1/2 hours!

Must be slowing up now. :o

Just realised the diversion @ East Marton along the canal and road to Gargrave. Cannot see why as the official route isn't that boggy. :o

Third place 372 Ian Magee has taken the wrong route!! There is a diversion there along the canal and road to Gargrave. He has kept to the official PW. Hopefully he will not be penalised.

6;00AM. So did the fourth placed the phenomenal lady 354 Emma Hopkinson who seems to be pulling back the above's lead over her.. Brilliant. O0

Quite a few others sticking to the official PW not the diversion. Don't blame them a bit shorter. ;D

A gap opening over Penygent! 436 Wouter Huitzing is going for it. Already 2K in front of 314 Simon Bourne. He must be gunning it to open up a lead of 2k over Fountains fell and Penygent..

Now over 5k off Penygent into Horton. The leader must be running bloody fast even after 22 hours. 14.6 miles to go should finish by 10am. Would that be a record? Considering the diversions et al adding to the routes length,

Victory in sight unless a tragic mishap or navigation error happens. Doubt the latter at this stage.

Plus two doing a pav and heading down the road to Elslack. Should have been up there in hindsight to direct them.  ;)

And a couple have missed the turn off and continued along the road.  I think that a few did this last year and then returned by a path a little further along the road via Wood House which would be a bit further.

Oops me too!

Just caught up with the 5 in Earby and put them on the nearest track to regain the PW. They seemed to be pretty strong so should finish. My good deed for the day done. ;D

Third place 372 Ian Magee has taken the wrong route!! There is a diversion there along the canal and road to Gargrave. He has kept to the official PW. Hopefully he will not be penalised.

Few more doing so now, suspect there will have to be a penalty.

He expected to be near the back of the field, good effort even to start:-

"Don't expect me to be anywhere other than near the back of the field, especially during the early miles of stage one. Hopefully I will be able to use my experience to work my way through. My target for CP1 will be sub 18 hours and if I get to CP2 Hawes inside of 55 hours after having some reasonable sleep, I will be going well. CP1 in more than 19 hours and CP2 Hawes outside of 56 hours and I will be struggling."

Even more going the PW route to Gargrave across the fields rather than the diverted route via the canal.  Surprised that there isn't a diversion notice on the stile, the canal route is much longer.

Yes, wonder how the organisers will deal with it, hopefully they'll ensure the 'Spine racers' will be properly briefed, or maybe even a diversion sign put up.

Also just noticed (I'm slow this morning) that there is a diversion at Lothersdale, which adds quite a bit of distance too, anyone know why?  Some seem to be ignoring that too.

According to my live mapping there is not a diversion at Lothersdale. Do you mean at Cowling or Ickornshaw? Can't see a reason for that detour unless the path has ended up with a "Health & Safety" notice slapped on by NYCC. :D

Too many replies to wade through but.....

Has anyone mentioned the fact that there has been no tracking signal from Eugenie Sole since just after the start? I seem to recall him finishing 3rd last year so I'd expect him to be up with the leaders, if his tracker starts working.

If anyone has mentioned it, sorry but too many posts  :P

just looked on the twitter account and it says...

Jim Mann looks to have forced a small gap ahead of Pavel Paloncý, Eoin Keith and Eugeni Roselló Solé. Carol Morgan is flying, too, with John Knap also close and Tom Hollins not far behind

So, he's still running and in contention. Think I'll trust twitter more than the tracking, lol

Went for a watch up hern clough and got the leader wrong with eoin( both have red jackets and dark hair oops). He was sure putting some effort in to try and open up a gap, had about 150m on pavel who seemed to be taking it steady over the niggly streams and eugeni was his constant shadow, eoin looked to be putting in some effort to keep the leader in sight. The leading lady was flying along and had a cheery smile! The later runners and walkers all seemed in high spirits and some even managed a smile for the camera. Took a few videos and pictures so will try and upload(if allowed) with the wifes help. Once back at the crossing the later runners were told to make heed and get upto hebden as soon as, they were predicting ALOT of snow in next 48hrs!
Im now mega addicted and will be trying my upmost to attempt this great event.

Whilst I enjoy "pushing myself" and enjoy a challenge especially if someone says "you can't do that" I am sitting here in the warm and thinking (knowing) I couldn't - no actually I wouldn't do that.  I could cope with the hour after hour in the cold and wet, tired body and brain but it is the lack of a good nights sleep that I couldn't cope with.

I think I know why other people do that as they also enjoy the challenge of pushing themselves both physically and mentally but way beyond people like me, their sense of achievement must be enormous.  Whilst I dislike the phrase that gets used nowadays but "respect" to them all.

Jim Mann going like the clappers through Thornton in Craven @ 10:00PM. Eoin 55 minutes later and seemed a lot slower. Maybe pacing himself. Started to rain heavily and did not realise the other front runners were near to Eion so took of home on my bike and missed them. Should have stayed in hindsight to see them through.

Morning all.

If you are on FB they are loading up quite a few live videos this year -some of the runners our in the field, others at checkpoints etc. I find them v interesting espce the checkpoint/ half checkpoint ones. Fascinating to see the mood of the runners, plus their routines etc

Anyway at one of them they mentioned that runners are being diverted around Pen y Ghent. Just wondering if Jim Mann was diverted too or was he too far ahead for that?

Carol Morgan indicated meeting someone around Malham Tarn having GPS problems. I think it was Pavel. She had got him back en route. There were language problems between them. She said her pace was quicker than his and she left him in a place of safety. The organisers indicated that they would check out his GPS but als indicated that he alsways has GPS problems!!

Fascinating event and great to get more of an insight with the technology available.

Shame about Eugeni - but the race is very much about navigation as well as the running.

How's a person meant to work when there's all this excitement out there?! Glad I haven't got a busy day/week!!!

Yes, when the trackers update simultaneously the distance seems reduced.  Will Jim Mann's cat nap hold him in good stead.

It's a battle at this stage. That could demoralise and  hurt Eoin being overtaken by Jim. But there are a few miles to go yet and if the snow is still predicted, the race will be a test of their skills in those conditions and who knows which of them will be more successful...? Do we think Pavel and Tom might make up time/distance?

It is hard to judge others by my standards!  If Jim had overtaken me after leaving him asleep at Hawes then I would be really demoralised but "perhaps" Eoin is pacing himself.  Pavel and Tom seem to me to be off the pace and unlikely to catch both of the leaders but both will no doubt have the endurance but will they have the pace of Jim?

More contestants need putting back on the right track at Thornton-in-Craven/Earby.

They have spotted their mistake and going across to pick up the correct path.

Change of mind it now looks like they are now taking a different route to Thornton-in-Craven via Booth Bridge rather than return to the PW.  Now traversing back to the PW rather then continuing to Booth Bridge!

When I first walked the Pennine Way in 2005, I know that was a long time ago, I arrived in Lothersdale quite late but the B&B owner phoned them and they kept some food for me notwithstanding that from memory they stopped serving at 9.00.  I guess that may not be a good recommendation re cost but they helped me out and I haven't forgotten so every time I walk or drive through Lothersdale I repay them in some fashion.

He must still have about 7 miles to get there, whilst they may still be there when he arrives they will be well refreshed and if their previous walking/running speed is anything to go by then I don't think he will be able to overtake them unless they have a physical problem.  What I want to see is Eoin waking up and getting an hour or so on Jim and then see what transpires.  Even with an hour I would put my money on Jim.

I wonder if he will get a time penalty for going off route as it was a short cut, albeit made in error due to the conditions?

It could be lack of sleep that is starting to catch up with Jim and causing him to make nav errors. As far as I am aware he dosen't have any experience of these multiday non-stop races and its new territory for him.Eoin is comfortable going without sleep for days on end due to his six day race experience.

Eoin has pressed on, Jim's tracker not working as presumably still in the stone built Greg's hut.

Tracker now working but behind Eoin, we should be able to see now whether it is fatigue/injury or lack of knowledge of the route that has been affecting Jim.

Yes, game over, I got it wrong again. Mind you just shows that regular 5 mile local walking sprints as your main training is not really adequate for events like this!
Only two pints of Guinness the night before and a decent sleep in Edale YHA, once the student group had quietened down.
My main focus for the first stage was not to arrive at CP1 as late as last year, however I overdid it some.
With the best ground conditions including dry slabs, that the race has ever had the going was good, apart from a messy diversion before Bleaklow summit.
Just outside of my best at Crowden, I struggled up Laddow rocks (insufficient hill work this year) then the usual cramps started, inner quad muscles, very difficult to stretch out. Freqent spasms and walking slow on semi rigid leg muscles, being overtaken all the time. This bad patch lasted for around 10 miles, by which time a group had formed.
Quite suddenly with around 20 miles to go to CP1, my legs fired into life and I took off dragging the group behind me. They were suffering but they didn't have to follow. At Stoodley Pike Rob, Al and myself stopped to don waterproof leggings as the bad wet windy conditions were setting in.
Two others went ahed as they already were wearing theirs. We never saw them again.
We all struggled on the ascents from Charlsworth and we had to leave Al who was slowing. I arrived CP1 after around 16.5 hours a good 3.5 hours faster than last time.
I tried to get some slepp but couldn't with all activity going on, so got ready and left around 5.15ma.
Legs stiff straight away, but eased some after a few miles apart from ascents and descents. The wind and rain was unrelenting, my expensive Columbia Goretex gloves filled with water. All paths became streams, fields waterlogged, and numerous couses had to be waded so shoes were full of water too, apart from that I was well protected from the weather.
Eventually I met up with Alan Cormac and Michelle Payne and we walked a good few miles together before they pressed ahead.
The pain in my legs was becoming a problem. I could quite a pace going on the flat but anything else I was struggling.
With trying to raise funds for Prostrate Cancer Uk I was pushing myself harder than ever, but the last two descents were so slow and painful I feared being stuck in the middle of nowhere unable to move.
On reaching the Hare & Hounds in Lothersdale I reluctantly decided to retire.
The team were very busy collecting other retirees so I got a taxi to Hawes CP2.
There I discovered that all those in that group during the first stage had also retired. One of them suffered a seizure upon entering that CP and was ruled out by medics.
My pal Chris, came to collect me later and take me home.
Watching the trackers and the moving time etc of Alan and Michelle, I doubt I would have made the cut off at Malham Tarn and there was no way I would have reached there anyway.
To all those who kindly donated to my Just Giving page, thank so very much. I hope I haven't let you down, I really did give it my all.
Dave.

Went for a few hours watch up to the A66 crossing, snow on the ground about 2". One min its sunny then the next cloudy and then snow/sleet showers, nothing untoward. The few that i saw were all in good spirits, enjoyed their little cream egg handouts and most said the snow helped with seeing the path better and footprints and also seeing the wetter muddy bits to avoid better. When i came to leave about 3.20 it was a complete whiteout, heavy blizzard type which wouldnt help much.

Tom Hollins is still in with a shout I reckon, he was strong at the end last year  O0

Most certainly. He took the lead last year after Bellingham and knows how to pace himself. He seems quite comfortable to be unsupported and still in good spirits.

Mohd Puzi Dolhal must be having a rough time on the Cam High Road, tail end runner, probably facing blizzards, and only 2.5 hrs to reach CP2.No rest allowed either, straight back on the course and over Shunner to CP3.

He's gone back for snowshoes!  Wonder if that will now help him past Pav (who may or may not have some). Pav seems to be off route, if the snow is deep enough for Eoin to return for snow shoes I suspect nav will be very difficult!!
Title: Re: The Spine Race2018 - List of competitors

If Pav can get to the road I wonder if they will be redirected up the road to the west of Padon Hill as they did last year.  Then it will be through the forest that "may" make it a bit easier to Byrness.  If so is he then allowed, if available, to pick up snow shoes?

Pav is now back on track.  That section is difficult enough with numerous tracks through fairly thick vegetation (heather?) so with it all covered in snow it must be a nightmare!

Yes, that section to the road will be tricky in snow. Thereafter they are going along road/ forest road which at least is fairly level and safe even in snow..

It might work to Pav's advantage if the race is abandoned.Conditons will be similar,or far worse, than those faced by Slogger in 2013 so I would be surprised if they send anyone onto the Cheviot ridge tonight.Forecast is for 50 mph winds and heavy snowfall for several hours. The other issue is MRT resources as they are fully stretched at the moment dealing with stranded motorists and its unlikely  a helicopter could fly in a white-out and high winds.

By my reckoning he is slowly gaining on Pav, but once he hits the road and then track through the forest the going should be far easier, not sure snow shoes will then be much of an advantage.

Just heard an interview with Pav ... at one stage he says he was waist deep in snow  :D

Whilst I like the thought of them continuing to race, my preference would be at Byrness (if they are allowed to continue) that they walk the rest and finish together.  Neither deserves to finish "second" albeit they will be a winner in my book.

In 2013 the organisers along with the support crew buddied the runners up for safety I would anticipate the same this time but the support people are very experienced and will do what is required (and probably to satisfy the race insurers)

Eoin's snow shoes don't seem to be helping, the gap between him and Pav seems pretty consistent, and Pav is almost at the road, things will get easier for him then.

Perhaps the snow has blown off the hill and drifted down to the road/track.  He is making good time over the ground again.

The main problem with Paddon Hill is bogs and I should imagine they will be frozen.Perhaps snow conditions on road are worse due to drifting and he has stuck to higher ground that has less snow? Just speculating as its far too easy to jump to wild conclusions sitting here in a warm room.

Just looked at the tracker and Pav's speed seems to have increased on Paddon Hill.

Latest: The race has been stopped. Every competitor are to be held at their next CP.

"Pavel Paloncý is already soaking his feet in the big pot of hot water in Byrness. The race has been stopped for now. It means that everyone is held in the CP they've reached. The weather forecast is not getting better. Let's see how will the organisers decide for the rest of the race"

A sensible decision. One death or bad incident and the tabloids would have a field day and the sponsors wouldn't touch the race with a bargepole.Of course more people would have died that day in RTA's but they don't sell papers as they are so common.

He is only being "held" at Byrness, when/if the weather improves he will have to climb up out of Byrness with triple portions of mince and mash inside!

It doesn't need me to sing its praises as anyone who has stayed there since it was refurbished wouldn't stay anywhere else.  Run by people who know what you need after a hard day/weeks walk including cleaning your boots!  I wonder if Pav took his boots off or fell asleep with them on!

Yes I was just looking at them it doesn't look good up there at the moment.  I presume they are taking off the ones on the way from Middleton to Forest-in-Teesdale to the Langdon Beck Hotel rather than let them continue to Dufton.

Just looked again, it appears that they are bussing them back to Middleton.

From Spine Facebook - OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:

Due to a severe weather warning, the Spine Race is on temporary hold with immediate effect.

The decision has been taken because the safety of both the runners and the support staff is likely to be seriously compromised.

The forecast includes persistent and heavy snow fall, 45mph winds and extreme wind-chill.

Racers are being held at CP3 (Middleton in Teesdale), Dufton, Greg’s Hut, CP4 (Alston), CP5 (Bellingham) and CP5.5 (Byrness). The race clock will not stop, however.

The situation is being monitored closely and the race will restart as soon as it is safe to do so.

Looking at bbc weather forecast, its worse with winds and more snow around middleton/dufton/alston than it is up bellingham/byrness. Due to clear away or just cloud further north than say middleton, so if its put on hold for 24hrs would those at middleton/dufton have enough time to get to ky considering there would be more snow on the ground? :-\

A few of the contestants who are now near Long Man Hill after Greg's Hut returned from near the disused mine to Greg's hut with another individual who is still there before they continued.

The ones that were approaching Cross Fell are now safely in Greg's Hut.

The 5 after Cross Fell have about 3 miles to get to Garrigill where I presume they will be bussed to Alston although the going should be a bit easier if they are allowed to continue on foot. (now very close to Garrigill but 4 of the 5 trackers have lost reception).

172 only has about a mile or so to go to get to Bellingham (Now safely at Bellingham CP).

There are 4 that are near to Dufton although one of them has now started to drift behind the other three (21.50 three have now arrived at Dufton) (22.20 4th one has now arrived at Dufton).

The location of the ones near Falcon Clints are, as usual, unknown due to the lack of signal along here. (21.29 Three signals now received approaching High Cup). (Now on their way down).

The two individuals after Middleton will be bussed back when they reach Forest-in-Teesdale, hopefully it isn't too bad along that stretch. (Now only one, maybe in bivi as no reception for ages).

I note the organisers have not stopped the clock so the ones who had already left CP3 on time are now being being bussed back to CP3 and will possibly be disqualified for failing to leave a CP on time when the race restarts!

If you stop a race there are always going to be winners and losers.Pav is a winner because he gets a much needed rest whilst those at the end of the field have slogged their guts out for nothing.I suppose one problem is that everything has been hired till Sunday and it would be difficult to go a day or two over time.

Latest position before I go to bed, most safely in CPs.  The others should be OK now.  OK one more update those near Garrigill continuing to Alston.  And 158 now woken up, should be on way back to Middleton shortly.

Here is a, possibly sacrilegious, question which I don't know the answer to.

Should the race be run in January?

Obviously January is the most taxing month and it is supposed to be 'Britain's most brutal race' but it feels as if every other year it has to be stopped due to extreme weather and, as has been said before, that then favours some and penalises others. It then effectively stops being a race and becomes and endurance event. Though obviously, for the majority of the competitors, that is what it always is.

Any thoughts?

Title: Re: The Spine Race2018 - List of competitors
Post by: Islandplodder on 08:28:45, 18/01/18

Perhaps that's one of the reasons they started a June race as well.
But I agree, a long stoppage does take some of the point out of it.  Everyone has had a night's sleep now, so it isn't really the same race.
I imagine most of the runners are pitting themselves against the clock and themselves rather than expecting to win, but even so you think it would be more satisfactory to stop the clock and give everyone an overall time, even if they kept the Sunday finish and a few of the people at the back got timed out.

On FB there's a suggestion about it being to do with snow goggles. But I think that is in comments rather than anything official...

I have wondered though, when looking at the small size packs some of the runners have, how on earth they manage to get all the required equipment into them. The mandatory list is quite comprehensive... I expect they will select the most lightweight compact stuff they can find, but even so, some of their packs are miles smaller than my day sack.

Item 7 is interesting and hadn't spotted it before.  If you must have a spare set of batteries AT ALL TIMES you'd need to carry two sets, or else you couldn't use one set as then you wouldn't have a spare.  Surely it should read something like a spare set when leaving any CP ...  :-\

No nor can I. I'd quite like a video tutorial from one of them to show how they did it. If I could carry such a small sack for my walks, I'd be chuffed. I'm sure 3000cal of food would fill my bag!!  ;)

It would appear the French women got a three hour time penalty for having the wrong kind of ski masks! Their ski masks were transparent cycling type and were not acceptable. At one point they were disqualified but after much discussion they got a time penalty instead. It would appear the kit list has no mention of full ski masks being a mandatory requirement so I wonder if its something the race insurers have insisted on and the organisers have overlooked it? Not too sure why Pav and Tom got three hour penalties but Pav did lose his map and failed to recover it so he might have got a penalty for this reason.

It was blowing 70 mph, I know Pav has many strengths but sprinting through deep snow after a map is not one of them!

Even with that 3 hours I can't see him being caught now barring some major incident.  Wish I could go at his pace, although actually maybe not as hardly worth doing the PW then  ;D

Spine Facebook shows "Race leader Pavel Paloncy has received a three-hour time penalty for a mandatory kit discrepancy. Two hours and 45 minutes of it has been served. Fifteen minutes will be added to his time."  So he should be OK, but we have said similar things before about other leaders.

Reading through that list of required items , unless there is a list of attached rules then some of it makes not a lot of sense. As with the spare batteries then for example the paracetamol, or the number of calories, once consumed do they HAVE to be replenished etcetera, or is it a registration checklist that can be used as and when required and not replenished?

I find this whole week strangely addictive. I am never at any time ever going to do anything like this, but having walked the PW can vicariously relive their exploits in wonderment.

They are checking the list as they leave each CP so I think if they loose or use something they would need to beg steal or borrow a replacement before they caan leave the next CP.
Pav has served most of his time penalty so he only needs to stay 15mins ahead of Simon & John.

The simplest answer is they don't.  Full winter kit takes up quite a lot of pack space, not to mention the runners have support teams who will carry spares for them. I imagine being able to strip out 1-3kg represents a few percent weight reduction for many of these guys.  Over the course of several days that will be the difference between a top finish and being in the pack.

Pav still making heavy weather of the final stretch, the worse bit for me was getting down from Auchope Cairn to Hut 2 - really steep, I went down sideways!  If it is thick snow perhaps he will go down on his backside.

I see Pav is at the Auchope Hut now. I've been looking at his mileage since 11am, about 14 miles. That is approx. 1.8 mph. The snow must really be deep and hard going, at least the exertion will keep him warm the wind chill must be well below freezing.

Crikey, he didn't stop long, he is on his way again! Incredible endurance.

I should imagine that is down to snow conditions being worse on the stretch to hut1 than they are on the ridge. Both those runners looked in good shape and good spirits earlier so it must be down to hard going rather than exhaustion or injury.Pav was very quick on the ridge.

That stretch to Hut 1 goes over quite a lot of broken, uneven land (esp if they went round the top of Chew Green). In deep snow that would be awkward ground to cover...ankle breaking stuff. Whilst the slopes are bigger on the ridge the path itself is more even pace for pace ( if that makes sense). Just had a look at the FB footage..looks tough......

Now, to coin an oft repeated phrase, it's all about second place. John Knapp and Simon Gfeller have been together for a good stretch now. The walkers/runners who have yet to reach Greenhead have got to average at least 1.8mph to finish by 0800hrs on Sunday.I doubt if its possible because they will have to sleep for a few hours and that will up the needed average to unrealistic levels of at least 2.08 mph.Hard to average over that terrain in dry conditions, let alone after walking 200 miles in a few days and faced with snow, ice and extreme cold.

She isn`t allowed they have changed the rules this year they must be in and out in 30 minutes. Pav could because it was an official hold for safety reasons. I think it`s because it is a midway CP ie. 5.5 it`s making getting everyone fed safely a bit frantic because we have to be careful when reheating the food. Still great fun though.

Lots of UK competitors as you would expect but 1 from Indonesia. He may be a random person that I choose to follow.

And he is still going, number 229. Almost at Greenhead just now.

I have plenty of admiration for Pav and Carol who were runaway/walkaway winners but I really take my (woolly) hat off to those taking part who stand at that start line in Edale knowing that they have not a chance of winning or even being in the top 10/20. Knowing that they will be out on the course for much longer than the winners and still going when they could easily have stopped and not 1 person would either blame them or feel that they hadn't tried.

Just to keep going when your brain and body is telling you that you might as well stop.....a better man/woman than me  O0

Well its good to see that thuis race has captured your imagination, its hard keeping up with all the posts. O0
Firstly thank you for your kind thoughts on my efforts.
Kit discrepencies - yes there have been a few. Its a lottery at registration whether they check your full kit or just partly. Just three of my items were checked.
Pav took the 3 hour penalty although I'm not sure what he was short of, my thoughts are that it was most likely cooking equipment.
The French couple laso penalised 3 hours were not carrying Goggles. turns out it was a translation problem as the description on the compulsory list translated to safety glasses in french. Goggles were quickly found and they were allowed to carry on.
Tom Hollins again I don't know.
Eugeni retired due to his two GPS's failing. he had maps and can navigate with them in a limited fashion. However in all his other international races he uses the GPS exclusively and in periods of bad visibilty and at night he lacks confidence without them. He made a very honest and open post concerning this and has regained much respect as a result.
Pavel, what can you say, he burned them all off didn't he.
Everyone on the Facebook Spine Group are all now rooting for the tailenders, the two behind the last two ladies are going to find it a struggle going beyond Bellingham even if they do make the cut off.
The two that I was with just before my retirement, Allan Cormack and Michelle Payne, I'm afraid didn't make it. Michelle was shivering in the cafe at Ponden and I feared she would go down with hypothermia, which she did and was pulled out by medics at Tan Hill. Allan battled on the Dufton where everything finally caught up with him and with Cross Fell ahead decided enough was enough.

That rule change is interesting - does that essentially mean that except for full CPs competitors are limited to stopping no more than 30 mins anywhere? eg huts, Is Dufton a full CP or not? And I wonder how that affects bivvying too...?

They can stay in the refuge huts as long as they like. The 30 minute rule is just for Malham Tarn, Horton In Ribblesdale Cafe, Dufton Village hall and Forest View Byrness.
They are going to be desperate for some sleep at Bellingham, so arriving late, i.e. with only a couple of hours to spare and knowing you then have no chance without bivvying until Hut 1 is going to mentally tough.

Back marker no. 173 Yan L'hostis has around 21 miles to go to Bellingham, with the terrain ahead and the speed he is moving its going to take him around 9 - 10 hours. If that's correct, it gets him in an hour or so before he's got to exit CP5.

Thanks for the explanation slogger.
Sorry your attempt wasn’t as successful as you’d have liked - but well done for being good enough to get on the starting line.

I also found your comments about kit check interesting - there has been a bit of speculation here about the mandatory kit list cf the size (small) of some of the packs.

This is in the FAQ on the Spine web site https://thespinerace.com/faq/

MONTANE® Spine® Race & Challenger
There may be up to three additional minor check points (Malham Tarn, Dufton, Byrness) but they aren’t intended as places for you to sleep necessarily, in fact Malham Tarn and Dufton have a 30-minute maximum stay rule. But they will all provide hot drinks, toilets, medical staff, weather updates and race information. Greg’s Hut (after Dufton, as you descend Cross Fell) is usually also occupied by race staff, who may well offer you noddles.

No reference that you can't stay longer than 30 minutes at Bryness. Have the rules changed and the web site not updated?

@ Ridge how did your Indonesian entrant do?

I see Ridge has went offline so I'll answer for him as I've also been keeping an eye on him. Hendra Wijaya, number 229 is still going and at the moment is approaching the bit where you cut off Hadrians Wall path and down towards the forest, which won't be much fun if it's as muddy as it always seems to be, even in summer.

Spine Race rules No.14. "Monitoring Locations such as CP1.5 (Malham Tarn), Dufton & Byrness are subject to a 30 minute maximum indoor stay."
The cafe in Horton is not included as pubs, cafes shops etc are allowed to be used.

From facebook: "Spine Safety Team 3 have been out checking the indomitable 'tailgunners' in the Spine race and have this to say...
'Phil Clarke and Jann L'Hostis in good spirits, buoyed by a local farmer and his wife who have been dot watching all day, popping out with a cup of warm soup for each of them."

Not sure if he will make the cut off but he is certainly giving it a go.

Yes I have just taken my first look of the day and be non surprised by how close the 2nd, 3rd and 4th women are. I was mulling over whether Sarah Kirsty Williams might just about be safe in second, with possibly 3rd up for grabs between the other two...

Edited to add I have just been catching up on the FB finishers videos and Matt Harman got down on one knee (impressive ensoufré after the PW) and proposed to his girlfriend - all caught on video! She was totally surprised and said yes - awwww, sniff,  :smitten: :smitten:

Yep, that's true but at least they'd finish even if out of time.  I know if it were me (which it never will be) I'd prefer to finish out of time than be timed out at Bryness, even though the thought of drinking your ale is a lovely one this Saturday morning  O0

Sharron is inside the last mile now to Byrness, so will make that cut off, however the two behind Andy and sarah Norman are going to have to get a 'wiggle on' (Sharron Sullivans expression) as they still have just over 4 mile to go and just over an hour left. Having said that they will be determined I'm sure and on that forest road you can get a good pace going. It's touch and go for them, fingers crossed.
Whether there is any allowance for the time they were held, I'm not sure. When we  were briefly held at Dufton in 2014, the hour and half was deducted from our finishing time, there was no adjustment to CP cut offs during the race.

According to the blurb the cut-off times will remain the same at Bellingham and Bryness.Four miles in an hour? Its possible as the ground is reasonably flat on that section.

Looking at Pav's tracker he didn't go anywhere near the Hotel, main road, he didn't even go across the stream until he got near to Forest View.  His tracker time seems to indicate, as would this couple, that the time is taken by the buildings just this side of ford leading into Byrness.  No doubt Joyce and Colin can put us straight when they have a bit of time to themselves.

Yes theres some confusion at to where the timing point actually is. All we were told as per documents is that it is at Byrness, so assumed it was the monitoring station at forest view, as that is what it stated in the docs.
Something else, some are saying that they may be given extra time as they were taken off the route and taken back to middleton due to the weather and have had to do that part of the route again??

Time is one thing but they had to walk about another 8 miles again. I have only checked Hendra Wijaya one of those due into Byrness before too long, he was one that had to re-walk to Forest-in-Teesdale.

The Norman's, who have just started up Byrness Hill, also had to re-walk from Middleton - I bet they wish they were now 8 miles closer to KY.

Really sorry it has finished that way however as it was a mandatory kit discrepancy then I can't argue, the organisers really do need the competitors/contestants to stay safe.

I agree, but they really do need to get their act together and carry out proper kit checks at the start and make sure people really do understand what they have got to carry at all times.

Agreed.  I think the mistake some seem to make is the fact they have a drop bag, so believe kit can be removed/returned/replaced from that at will depending on what they think the next leg will be like, rather than understanding 'this is what you must carry at all times'.  Seems partly this time as well there have been some language difficulties.

It really does needs more clarification on when and where credit, and penalty times are served, as it looks like it is made up as they go at the moment and has been different in some cases in different years.
If penalty times are being awarded after the finish, then that is different to last year when Pavel and Eugeni served their penalty at the next CP, after taking to a road instead  of following the route across fileds.
The fact that credits were given for those that were picked up and taken back to Middleton, well that has never happened before so is a new one, and has obviously been allowed as extra time during the race, not after the finish.
Runners need to know all these things beforehand and I will make that point to Scott if no one else has done so already.

Daphné Derouch must have extremely hacked off, her time from clocking in at Byrness to Kirk Yetholm was 15 hours 22 minutes.  Sarah Kirsty Williams took 24 hours 15 minutes.

Jens Wackerhagen who reached hut2 then retired says that he ran short of food and lost a 600 calory bottle during a fall, which left him exhausted. He had to battle hard on low energy reserves and fight his way through sometimes waist deep snow, hallucinating badly,  to reach hut 2. He was wrapped in sleeping bags and gold foil where he slept for several hours. Its a bit confusing after that and it seems he retired upon reaching the hut. he states that upon waking he realised that he could have eaten in the hut and carried on to finish. However a photo of him being supported in the Border hotel in KY, gives the impression that that option was not really on.

He wouldn`t have been carrying the necessary number of emergency  calories as per the mandatory list to exit the hut as required by the rules and the guys in the hut couldn`t have given him supplies to take away as this would have counted as outside support like we could feed the runners in the CP but not give them coffee sachets to take away.

For what it`s worth the time penalties that I saw imposed were harsh but fair as they need to be when safety kit is involved. The conditions on the Cheviot ridge last night were truly brutal the kit on the list is to keep them alive.

Yes, I'd thought that too, but wasn't sure enough to mention it.  Back on track now having retraced his steps, 'Pav' if I recall correctly simply climbed up the steep slope!

Evening all. I had to go out this afternoon (braved the madness of ikea at the weekend) so I’ve been catching up here on the events. Agree with Slogger about the need for clarity and consistency about how the rules and time pénalités are applied. It’s puzzling enough for the sofa support teams -warm, well fed and rested. Must be hard to follow when you are fatigued, exhausted and your wits are on survival and route finding.

Off to dot watch for a while and catch up on the FB spine race page, plus support Phil Clarke as the tail runner. Hope he gets in safely -are they meant to finish by 8am tomorrow?

Yes its 8.00am. Phil is staggering on.

I have a spine race related injury. Having spent all afternoon dot watching I twisted my knee getting off the sofa, I can barely stagger to the kitchen for another beer.

Wish we knew a bit more about the kit they use, Pav's rucsac for example looks exactly like the one I would like, but can never find.  Anyone know what make it might be?

Daphné Derouch now placed 4th woman presumably after one 3 hour penalty, presumably the 1st 3 hour penalty had been served elsewhere.

Whilst he may not agree, as far as I am concerned, as long as he finishes the time doesn't matter.

Crazy how last sunday seems so far away but yet still only yesterday, don't now what i'll be doing from now until whenever to fill in my time( apart from trying to get fit). Congrats to everyone who took part and those that finished the spine this year, im sure along with me there will be plenty of people who you will have inspired! Hoping to take the full week off work next year to follow this great event, will maybe volunteer to help if they accept complete novices?
Once again thanks to everyone involved with the Montane spine race 2018, its my new passion!! O0

Did you see the interview with Phil Clarke at the end saying how slowly he had gone, this from a man who has just completed the Pennine Way in a week in January.

I have wondered (since I did it) about how long it would take me to walk it (not run) if I pushed myself and got someone to support me during an attempt. Walked it in 13 days.

Have you ever wondered how far you could walk in 24 hours if you had to and where you would attempt it? Certainly not the PW but maybe the Coast to Coast?

The final tally from CP 5.5   77 meals eaten by runners, safety team and medics. 26 pounds of Aberdeen angus beef, 3 packs of Quorn, 2 sacks of spuds, 1 sack of onions and 1 sack of carrotts. 4 packs of bacon and dozens of eggs. There was only one lady I couldn`t feed it was the last vegetarian through and we only had beef mince made and there was not time to defrost a veggie meal in time for her to eat it inside the 30 mins.  It beggars the imagination what the tally for CP1 would be as they have all of the starters from the challenger and the spine and with less time spread.

The 3,000 minimum calories as per race rules, for consumption on the route (not retained) were to be carried form the start, CP 3 Middleton and CP5 Bellingham. Food/water etc given by Spine support teams on the route is not counted as outside support, also runners giving other runners support by way of food/water clothing etc is not counted as outside support and such support is in fact encouraged.

It turns out that Jens can only consume Gluten Free food, which he had well run out of, and none was available at Hut 2, hemnce he couldn't eat there and continue on to the finish despite him feeling really good after a good sleep.
