Last Saturday saw me return to the Mournes for the first time in three months as restrictions started to lift in Northern Ireland. I had decided that Bernagh was going to be my first post-lockdown walk for quite some time. Blessed with glorious sunshine I parked at Meelmore Lodge and headed toward the Trassey track to the Hares Gap. Following the Mourne wall I reached the summit of Bernagh two hours after leaving the car park. It was quite a popular summit even though I started quite early. Bernagh is actually a twin-peaked mountain, the 4th highest in the range with great views in every direction. The only sub-range that can't been seen from the summit is the Slievemartin range. Dropping down to the saddle Bernagh shares with Meelmore I picked up the Trassey track before crossing the river back to Meelmore Lodge. Total distance was 10km taking three hours.
