Last Saturday saw me return to the Mournes for the first time in three months as restrictions started to lift in Northern Ireland. I had decided that Bernagh was going to be my first post-lockdown walk for quite some time. Blessed with glorious sunshine I parked at Meelmore Lodge and headed toward the Trassey track to the Hares Gap. Following the Mourne wall I reached the summit of Bernagh two hours after leaving the car park. It was quite a popular summit even though I started quite early. Bernagh is actually a twin-peaked mountain, the 4th highest in the range with great views in every direction. The only sub-range that can't been seen from the summit is the Slievemartin range. Dropping down to the saddle Bernagh shares with Meelmore I picked up the Trassey track before crossing the river back to Meelmore Lodge. Total distance was 10km taking three hours.

Wonderful stuff, Henry. I don't know what it is about the Mourne mountains, but I find them really appealing.

Gorgeous!
I was lucky enough to visit the Mourne Mountains one day in 2012.  We had a fantastic day climbing up the river from Bloody Bridge to Slieve Donard (yes, I know we could have taken the path, but climbing over the boulders was much more fun).  I never got to the top to be honest, the blokes went on, but me and my mate went back down to the road set up lunch.

Your photo's remind me so much of the area.  Wonderful.   O0 O0
