Walking 1000ft above sea level = harder?
« on: 17:08:08, 18/04/18 »
I used to live on parity with sea level, but recently moving away and 1000ft above sea level in the UK, I would like to know if walking is noticeably harder on the body as a result?

Many thanks!

No - you need to go higher than that.  If you make a rapid change from sea level  to around 6000 (say within 2-3 hrs ) you will notice an effect, e.g. increased shortness of breath if you run up stairs, but most people acclimatize reasonably quickly to the change, usually within 24-48 hrs for moderate levels of exertion.

Since it is the amount of oxygen in the air that causes any altitude effect , I thought it may be interesting to notice that the difference between sea level and 2000 ft is minimal.

Only time I ever noticed it was from 2000m (6K ft +) and upwards so no issues anywhere in this country.  Even on Nevis ;D

I looked into this when planning some hikes in the US last summer - it seems that people start to notice an effect at 10,000 feet so no worries in the UK.
