TR Geltsdale and Talkin Tarn Sun 3 Jun 18
« on: 18:36:40, 05/06/18 »
On Sunday we got the bus to Hayton Lane End, near Brampton in north east Cumbria. We had a long walk planned to make up for yesterdays disappointment of no wild camp. We walked through Gelt Woods from Low Gelt Bridge, always a pleasure.

The River Gelt near Middle Gelt Bridge

We had good views today, the low cloud from yesterday had lifted. There wasn't any rain either and hardly any wind. Not a bad day at all.

Castle Carrock Fell from the path to Greenwell

Once at Middle Gelt Bridge we carried on next to the Gelt on the way by Greenwell, a lovely little place, very nice houses and friendly people.

Beefy on the way through Greenwell

The bridleway through Greenwell

Lovely flowers in the fields

An orange tip butterfly

We had to google it to find out what it was, we had no idea. This is the male, the female has no orange tips

On the bridleway to Castle Carrock

Castle Carrock ahead

This is another very pretty place Castle Carrock and more nice houses

We stopped for some lunch just passed Castle Carrock before walking up the lane toward Jockey Shield and Geltsdale.

Fine views of Talkin Fell

We dropped down to Geltsdale and crossed the river at Low Hynam then reascended the other side of the valley onto the bridleway to Talkin Head

Bluebells at Low Hynam

The view from the bridleway to Talkin Head

A turkey at Talkin Head

On the way to Talkin Village more lovely houses and flowers

We turned right at Talkin Village heading for Farlam and the footpath to Talkin Tarn

We thought this sheep looked like The Joker

Lilies at Talkin Tarn

Nice reflections at Talkin Tarn

We stopped for a break sitting on a bench. The tarn path was busy with families and it wasn't a peaceful sit down! At the tea shop area we left the tarn on the footpath toward Tarn Road.

On the footpath by Wreay to Capon Tree

Back to peace again on this lovely footpath. A little rain threatened here but stopped after a minute. We got our bus at Brampton, we had tired legs but were very happy to have had such a nice walk. Nice weather although we could have done with some sunshine. The countryside in Cumbria is very pleasant, we normally only see these places in the winter, nice to see it in summer with all the trees in leaf and all the pretty flowers about. Our route was Hayton Lane End - Low Gelt Bridge - Middle Gelt Bridge - Greenwell - Castle Carrock - Jockey Shield - Low Hynam - Talkin Head Farm - Talkin - Farlam - Talkin Tarn - Wreay - Capon Tree Wood - Brampton.
21.4km with 300m ascent

Talkin head farm ? is that the one with the large automobile and the shotgun shack ?  I might go there  once in a lifetime  ;)  (sorry)

Lovely walk. Geltsdale is hardly ever mentioned but has some great walking. We used it as an approach to little visited Cold Fell.

That turkey be a guinea fowl methinks.

Debatable. I suspect it might be wood cranesbill, a species that has a northerly distribution and is absent from the south.

Some lovely photos, April, thanks for sharing. The bluebell appears to be the true native one and not the alien Spanish one.

A comment, though: if I click on any of the photos I see the little hand symbol but they don't enlarge, I get a message saying 'The address isn't valid, the URL is not valid and cannot be loaded.' It's one for the techs.

Bet you felt as though you were floating along with no heavy camping packs.

It was so easy! I'd even forgot to take my chair so my pack was so light  :)

I am ignoring your Talking Heads joke  ;D

Lovely photo of the orange tip butterfly

Thanks Dovegirl  :)

Geltsdale is hardly ever mentioned but has some great walking.

It really is a fabulous place, a very wild and isolated feel about it

That turkey be a guinea fowl methinks.

;D  Methinks you is correct. It is the first guinea fowl I have seen  :)

The bluebell appears to be the true native one and not the alien Spanish one.

Yes I think it is a native bluebell, they were in the woods above Low Hynam.

I have no idea if the cranesbill are wood or meadow ones, they were lovely whatever they were, they were in a meadow so they might be the meadow variety?  :-\

I am not a tech so I can't answer your question   ;)

Lovely photos, April - it's wonderful to see all the wildflowers and the blossom on the trees at this time of year.  :) O0

 ;D

I didn't do very well this weekend naming flowers and birds, David Attenborough's job is safe  :D

Sheer laziness on my part really, "it looks like a turkey" and "they look like lilies"   ::)

I googled the butterfly, I should have had a look for the bird and yellow flowers too  ;D
