Route up is follow the snow in the main gully

And the lake again

no need for crampons but you wouldn't want to slip

View of some mad (tiny) climbers on the ridge

The last tricky part near the top which JOester calls 'a little ' exposed

Even on the first day the top itself was busy mainly from Slovakia

great views though

and again

I'd recommend Zakopane and these walks for anyone it's a gorgeous place

Brilliant Trip Report, the Polish Tatras look excellent both with and without snow, though perhaps I'd choose the quiet season and risk some snow. Excellent stuff and definitely on my hit list  :)

Beautiful photos, Cogstar - it looks absolutely mint like that.
I think I'd have been quite happy with a bit of ancient, consolidated snow about.
As it was the week before, I'd had (paranoid) visions of this happening:

(and that's down to Morskie Oko lakeside!)

Much to read, but enjoyed every word. And some fantastic photos to illustrate. How did you manage to get a holiday without the kids? What a wonderful experience it must have been.

Many thanks!

How did you manage to get a holiday without the kids?

Very understanding grandparents and in-laws.  They get a 'Polish Night' of booze, cuisine and a slide show* as thanks...

Maybe you should organize a Polish night for the forum to see the rest of the photos! ;)

Thanks for this Joe. Considering this as a destination for next summer (with Emma). Not sure I like the sound of the hostels (I like my sleep!) Do you reckon it would still be doable to base ourselves in one of the main towns and do day walks?

Thanks all, again - really appreciate the comments.

I think the hostels would be fine on a weekday out of season, as it was, our two mad nights were the Friday and Saturday nights.  The Morskie Oko and Roztoka hostels on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights were tranquil.
The town of Zakopane would make a decent base.  You could get up Giewont, or anywhere on the Kondracka Kopa - Kasprowy Wierch ridge in a day.  A 30 minute bus ride takes you from Zakopane to Polana Polenica (where we finished our trek) where you can get the horse bus (or 10k hike) up to Morskie Oko.  There's plenty more of the Park to the west of where we were that we didn't get near.  If you went to Slovakia, you'd have about 4x the area to explore.  Cross border walking is allowed, so you could take in part of both countries.

Thanks for the info Joe, might pick your brains some more nearer the time if that's okay. Lovely photos. Is there no swimming aloud throughout the whole park? Would you say the area is pretty kid friendly?

Nope, no swimming.  You are unlikely to find any of the tarns secluded enough for a cheeky dip either.
You'd face a fine if caught.
I think you and Emma would be fine, though I'd steer clear of any routes with lots of fixed chains, they wouldn't suit little hands, and where there are steps cut into the rock, they tend to be an adult's stride apart.
There's enough in Zakopane to keep you occupied for a couple of non-walking days, including a water park.

I haven't looked at the forum for a while so have only just seen this.  Excellent report Joe, thanks for taking the time to post it.  O0   I was so overwhelmed with the amount of photos and days in the alps that I couldn't take on the task of writing a trip report.  Maybe I'll do it in darkest winter if the weather is pants.

guess who
