Superb fritillary shots, SunnyD

Without the smaller creatures the big beasties would have no dinner :)

Thanks Jac....and without the bigger creatures, the small beasties would have no dinner either!.....

On the Llyn coast path last week, I developed a bit of a macabre fascination with some Burying beetles (Nicrophorus vespillo in this case), feasting on a dead shrew....

There were four of them feasting at one point, although this one ran off a bit quick after a bit of a scrap over some entrails!.... :D

I couldn't see the beetles to start with, as they were underneath/inside the shrew....but as I looked down at the poor dead shrews body, it started to lift up! Then out popped a beetle from underneath! I used my pole to gently turn it over, only to be greeted with a rather grizzly sight! :D

Like something from a Hammer Horror, beautifully caught though.

Fascinating - great set of pics - if you'd had the time to wait, I think they would have burrowed away underneath and then the shrew would have sunk mysteriously into the ground.

I found a dead shrew in wet weather in the Hafren forest, it had a large black slug on it's throat and it gave the macabre appearance that the slug had killed it. Posted it a good few years ago but it went the way of the bucket.

Great shots of the beetle.

On a happier note. Age and general wear and tear make my efforts to press the shutter button at the right time less frequent.
Anyone save me the effort of finding a butterfly book?   O0

Not sure if these count as I wasn’t out walking at the time.  I was killing time in Changi airport between flights

I took this photo in October 2017 and the moment remains one of the best I've had while walking because it was totally unexpected.

I was only four miles from Whitstable on the North Kent coast, which isn't exactly an area known for deer. I've lived around here for nearly 50 years and I hadn't seen a deer before (or since). I do a walk in that area most weeks and I've been on the lookout for deer for the last two years; I live in hope!

One of my favourite stretches of the North Downs Way is the bit between Chartham Hatch and Canterbury that we walked this morning.

In just a short distance the trail passes through the site of an Iron Age hillfort called Bigbury Camp, through an ancient orchard called No Man's Orchard, and it also passes by a wooded area that's home to some friendly reindeer...

...and equally friendly donkeys.
