Title: 48 run walk
Post by: di36mg on 18:45:29, 26/11/18
Hello... not been on the site for ages but really need some advice.

I've registered on a 48 hour running event next year. It starts at Haltwhistle. You have 48 hours to get as far away from Haltwhistle as you can. The downside is for the race, only as the crow flies miles count. So we are wanting to head towards Manchester / Birmingham direction. I live in Manchester.

Been having a think about routes. Utilising part of the Pennine Way is one idea but may be too hilly, and as such wouldn't help in getting the miles in. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of canal paths up there either.

So I wondered if any of you good people had some ideas.. once past Manchester..  If we get that far, we can use the canal network.. do you think heading onto parts of the PW is a good idea or is there a lower level route that any of you know about...

Thanks,

Dianne

I haven’t walked it but maybe part of the Pennine Bridleway would work for you?

Hmmmm... don't know that route, thanks.. I will investigate that option.

Its a tough challenge.I would tend to head to Brampton and then work my way south via minor moorland roads, first to Slaggyford, then Alston,Langdon Beck, possibly cross Stainmore Common to the Dales and then pick up more minor roads. This would be the quickest way but the suggestion of the Pennine Bridleway would also be a good option provided the weather is dry.
I honestly wouldn't worry too much about routes south of Manchester unless you are capable of a world class performance.Provided you don't stop for sleep it should be possible to knock up 150-170 miles in the 48 hour time period.
I presume competitors have trackers to stop people cheating?

Thanks Tony... I know some people who have done Escape From Meriden (see above) down minor roads and most tend to say avoid due to vehicles sometimes driving like idiots... but I think some are going to be unavoidable..

The Middlewood way is  10 miles long from Marple to Macclesfied Flat old railway track .
Also you could use The Macclesfield canal towpath to continue all the way to Kidsgrove in Staffordshire

What a fascinating concept.

How much ground do you think that you will be able to cover in 48 hours?

Its very interesting and something I will seriously consider in the future when I get more free time. Its very similar to the training my father did in WW2 although he was dropped around 200 miles from base without any food or water and had to find his own way back inside three days.

It is a real risk and something that needs to be considered carefully.I used to run on country roads and always got on the verge the minute I heard a car coming.Never trust drivers to see a runner or walker in the road.

Not really trying to think about it.. my mate is desperate to do 100 miles so anything over that is a bonus

They also had a race called convergence... you had 24 hours to get back to a certain point. So you had to pick a spot, a good estimate of how far you could travel in that time. Some people overestimated and didn't make it back. Others under estimated and got to base far too early..

Canal network Towpaths.

The Macclesfield canal Joins the Trent & Mersey canal follow past Stafford, onto the Great Haywood Junction .

From There head South westerly past Penkridge and Gailey To Aldersley
Junction  follow towpath to Birmingham

Re:
Canal  network towpaths.
I should have said The Macclesfield canal  (26 miles from Marple) finishes at,
Kidsgrove.
Where the Trent and Mersey Canal converges :
Follow the towpath South to pickup the Birmingham Main canal to the city center.
Might be advisable to carry a map & compass to Insure taking the correct route .
Good luck  :) ;) O0

Yes the point to reach was the Meridian too. Mark also does the escape ultra for pairs who are chained agained together. All his events are hard and timings between CP's mean that you have to run a lot, you won't make his cut offs by pure walking.
