newbie from scotland
« on: 09:22:03, 06/06/18 »
hi all,
I am a 44 year old male from Cockburnspath in South East Scotland.
Taking up a new hiking as a new hobby, use to cycle a lot but knees a bit too old for that these days. looking to get out for some short hikes later this month with my brother who is also new to hiking with a more experienced friend to show us the ropes and guide us in what gear to buy.

Welcome!

Your comment about changing from cycling to hiking because of your knees is interesting

I am in the Backpackers Club; several members have changed from hiking to cycling because of knee problems; looks like you reach a stage where knees will complain whatever you do.

Many of these new cyclists use Brompton folding bikes. By using lightweight gear and careful packing you can carry a Brompton on a train as hand luggage
Thus you can travel further afield than hiking or cycling would normally take you

I did try switching to a full carbon race bike for a while and had gear ratios changed to help the knees. But the mountain was always first choice.
