I have a tent which was purchased for this purpose. It’s a two man so the mrs can join in if she chooses. Buying a 1 man at this point would’ve caused more pain from her than the extra weight will.
I have a vango Nevis 200. Nice and green but 2kg.

Bivvy bag and tarp was only an option really because I have one from my time wearing a lot of green. I’m sure I’ll make use of it someday.

So tent it is. A green one  O0

Sleeping mats? Again I have one. Is this an unnecessary luxury?

Its a personal thing - a good night sleep cannot be overated.
If you are happy sleeping on the ground and don't suffer then do it.
If you wake up stiff and aching shoulders and hips (particularly if you are a side-sleeper) use a mat.

A mat will not only make 'the bed softer' but will also give insulation from the cold ground (not that, that's a problem at the moment)

I would suggest that most DO use a mat of some sort.

What Alan says. Insulation of some sort is important, and a bit of extra cushioning is always welcome.

I use an ancient (1984) closed cell foam mat that I have cut down to 120cm long, so that it just fits under my torso; weight 208g. Works for me, but others may prefer a bit more comfort. Choice of a good pitch is important too - I slept on this clifftop on short heather recently and it was super comfortable; and the smell was a delight: (edit - not heather, I've realised that it is crowberry)

So I’ve been and had a really great experience. Took loads of photos and learned a lot. Will post the trip report soon. Had to cut the journey from 3days 2 nights to 2 days 1 night due to family commitments but loved it all the same.
