Derwent Edge in the snow - last Sunday:-)
« on: 14:55:33, 09/01/10 »
I've recently been taking people on guided snowy walks in the Peaks and on Sunday, I took a chap on my Derwent Edge walk.

We started off about half a mile from Fairholmes CP, as the road was just too snowy to get any closer! Apart from the amazing scenery, the highlight was seeing around a dozen Mountain Hares in their white Winter coats, running around on the snow covered moorland 8)

At one point, finding the path across the moorland was very difficult and we were trudging through thigh deep drifted snow!  I fell over...more than once....but at least I had a soft landing! :D
Once at the CP, we took the path alongside of the Ladybower Reservoir...

Then up Walkers Clough, with it's little stream...

Wherever I walk, I seem to have Robins following me! :) ...

Further up, a steep rocky part of the route covered with snow, with a gorgeous drift at the top. After sinking on the first attempt to climb it, we decided it was safer to skirt around it!...

The drift, simple but stunning...

The view from our path...

And the gentle climb ahead...

Snow Drifts on the moorland path...

Looking towards a snowy Hill End and Lost Lad...

Approaching Back Tor and the Trig Point...

Snowy rocks at Back Tor and a deep snow drift across our path...

Low clouds forming over the distant hills...

And looking back at Back Tor...

Along Derwent Edge...

Frosty snow rocks...

Snowy rocks and drifts...

As we came off Derwent Edge, the sunset bathed the landscape in a soft gold/pink glow...

Our Path back...

The sunset...

Hope you enjoyed.
Tracey. :)

WOW excellent pictures Tracy, all that virgin snow. Bet it was hard work walking in that lot. Was your client accustomed to this sort of walking or was it a new experience for them.

Thanks for sharing.  O0

Hi Micky,

Yes, it was very hard work at times and tough on the thigh and calf muscles.  Having said that, the experience of being there and doing the walk that day, is one I wont forget in a hurry.
My companion had never walked in snow like that before - and as he was over 6ft tall, I kindly let him cut the untrodden parts first!  Only trouble is, when I stepped in his footsteps, I went down a bit further than he did! :D

I'll be posting photos of more Derbyshire 'snowy' Edges soon 8)

That was awesome in the original sense. Thanks for sharing that. Where was it exactly? Is it far from Leeds? Fancy checking it out!

Hi Granty,

Nothing special really, just a Canon Powershot A530 4x optical zoom 5.0 mega pixels.
It's set on Auto most of the time - some shots work, some shots don't!
I've no idea how to change the settings and tend to just point and shoot when I see a shot I like!  Well, it works for me! :D  .....mostly.

I do have a posh Nikon thingy - known as a bridge camera? - but have no idea how to use it! :-[
I reckon I'd get great shots with that one! ;)
