Title: Where to Holiday in Yorkshire advice please.
Post by: tenmilesplus on 00:47:08, 20/02/18
Hiya all.....

Well it's cottage holiday booking time and we would normally go to the Lake District from Basingstoke Hampshire but we have decided it has become too commercialised so we are considering a change after 12 years... What about Yorkshire she says... well why not ?? We do go walking in The peak District and East Wales / Gloucester / Wye Valley...

We have been flicking around 'tinternet and have seen a fair few cottages around which has led to more confusion, we are new to Yorkshire so are seeking some advice on where to stay to get a best vantage point.. We prefer to rent a cottage, park the car for a week walks from the door and get around using public transport make use local pubs / shops etc..

We have considered Settle which looks good in the pics but there are other options farther out of towns which make walks from the door more likely but the cottage needs to be within a short distance of a bus / train station.. Walking can be any type but a mixture would be nice.. I have read some posts on here that mention the Forest of Bowland but bus routes might be an issue  ??

So any advice on where to look first ? We are pretty poor ( for the South ) can afford around £350 a week, we are looking at going some time in March..

  Thanks for your help..

I can’t help with suggestions of an actual cottage as we have only stayed in B&Bs in Yorkshire. But in other areas we usually search for a specialist cottage company that is based in and only deals in that area. Or you could try airbnb. You mention about cottages further out of a town, but you can easily walk from the centre of most villages and even small towns in Yorkshire and you’re in the countryside in minutes. What about Hawes? One of our main considerations when booking is there a pub within walking distance to eat at night?  ;D

Settle is good because you have the train, and there are lots of walks you can do using the railway.
Another place to consider might be Kettlewell.  There isn't much in the way of public transport, not sure of the status of the dales bus these days, but I would think you could walk from there for a week, there are pubs in the village and others  ranged conveniently along the walks you would be likely to take.  And Wharfedale is lovely.  Not sure about shopping though, what we tend to do on that kind of holiday is a massive shop on the way in and try not to do much during the week.

I don't know Yorkshire that well but Settle is a place which I'd go to again, walks in every direction and the train of course.

Settle - although I'm biased cos I live there  :)

You have walks right from the door and as gunwharfnan says "in every direction".

Two railway stations - Settle (trains to and from Leeds/Carlisle) and Giggleswick (trains to and from Leeds/Lancaster).
Bus route to and from Skipton/Kirby Lonsdale - hourly service. Look at the dales bus website for more links to buses and trains giving access to Ingleton, Hawes, Sedbergh, Bolton Abbey, Kettlewell, Buckden. Settle to Carlisle line is good for walks from Horton in Ribblesdale, Ribblehead, Dent, Garsdale and Kirkby Stephen.

Supermarkets and shops to replenish supplies. Pubs, cafes and restaurants including fish and chip shops.

If there is a live do on at Victoria Hall, buy a ticket and go.

Loads of walks both low, medium and high level can be found either right from Settle itself or from within 20 to 30 minutes travelling time.

And if you picked a day like today for a walk here - heaven .... blue sky and sunshine  :)

If you want more info, then just post a request. If Peter sees this then I'm sure he will contribute his twopennorth to the walks on offer.

I would be inclined to go for Kettleweii. There are three pubs to go at for evening meals plus cafes and a shop. More importantly, there are a variety of walks along and at both sides of the valley. Settle is ok but the best walks tend to be only on the north side.

There are some free walk descriptions from both places on my website if they are of assistance.

You're spoilt for choice in Yorkshire  ::)  We toured with a caravan but loved Settle, Skipton and Bolton Abbey. We found Yorkshire people very welcoming to tourists and you can generally get good food at reasonable prices.

I would go for Settle. Plenty of walks in all directions from there including the Ribble Way which goes through the village. You could catch a bus or train from there to Horton in Ribblesdale or Ribblehead and explore the Yorkshire 3 peaks. Bus to Ingleton and explore the Ingleton falls path. Walk over to Malham Cove and Goredale Scar, to name just afew ideas.
