Steeple to Scoat Fell Arête
« on: 13:50:21, 14/10/18 »
Planning already for 2019.

I’m terrified of heights, my partner hates scrambling.

Going up from Ennersale to Steeple looks fine, BUT from Steeple to Scoat Fell is seriously worrying me.

How is the scramble from Steeple down to the ridge and on the ridge, how’s the exposure, and how close to the edge is the ridge.

Thanks for any help and advice

This is so subjective.
We did out and back across the arete this summer with no problems, though neither of us are particularly worried about heights or scrambling. It is definitely steep but not scrambling to me and you are not right on the edge of the drop, it is definitely not Sharp or Striding edge.

As Ridge says - very subjective.  I have walked across it a few times from Scoat Fell to Steeple and love it, but Mrs pdstsp, who is scared of heights point blank refused to cross.  There is no scrambling and the path is well defined, but there is an airy feel in places.

I should say that Mrs pdstsp is very very scared of heights - years ago we stayed in a hotel overlooking the Niagara Falls and she wouldn't come into the room for half an hour - she looked at the view from the hotel corridor.

I have been across the arete a few times and it is challenging if you don't like heights. It is over quick, the route is short. You will not know if you will be comfortable with it unless you try it.

A man fell 260ft from the arete this year and he died sadly

https://www.grough.co.uk/magazine/2018/07/16/man-dies-in-260ft-fall-from-steeple-during-lakeland-challenge

So although it is not as long or as exposed as the more famous edges, a fall here can have dire consequences.

Many thanks everyone.

Coming down to the ridge from Steeple, is there any feel of exposure?

Is the ridge right next to the edge?

I realise it's very subjective, and everyone's views are different.

I read about the man falling at the time - I think it was in the dark, which I certainly won't be doing!

Steve do you mean the ridge going down to Ennerdale?

If you do, you can keep well away from the edge so you don't have to look at the drop.

If you mean the other way up on to Scoat Fell, there is a bit of a drop to look at on the right as you descend.

From Steeple to Scoat Fell.

Planning on going from Ennerdale up to  Steeple, then Scooat Fell, Haycock and Caw Fell, and it's the Steeple to Scoat Fell section I'm really worried about

It is difficult to advise you because what is ok for one person isn't to another. You just won't know how you will be unless you try it.

There are some good photos on this report. Great website if you don't know about it.

Finally did this on Saturday.

Very nervous about the Steeple to Scoat Fell arete from what Iv'e read and seen.

Couldn't believe how tame it was. I was expecting having a panic attack, and crawling across, but never even felt a heart flutter.
I was expecting a large dose of exposure, but in my opinion, there's none whatsoever.
I might hav efelt a little different if it had been wet or windy, but it was a beautiful day Saturday

Thanks everyone for help and advice

Good for you Steve  O0

I have done it quite a few times and sometimes I find it ok and other times find it intimidating. I'm not sure why!

You may want to try other routes that you thought might be out of your comfort zone?

I think next will be Yewbarrow via Dropping Crag, which I believe has some exposure and a little scrambling, which I love, but my partner 'has short legs', so isn't always keen.

Then to Red Pike (avoiding Stirrup Crag) and Pillar.

Hopefully the next time we a have free weekend when the forecast's good

That's a cracking route - particularly if you finish with a pint in the Wasdale Head to finish!
