Best views, etc in the UK
« on: 19:48:16, 09/12/18 »
I was in the pub last night and was asked what are the best views, etc that I've seen in the UK?

That question really put me on the spot! So after thinking for a couple of minutes I offered High Cup Nick, the Falkirk Wheel and seeing Hadrian's Wall for the first time as I hiked The Pennine Way, north to south, some years ago.

In that moment, I was just into my second pint and that's all that came to mind.

Reaching High Cup Nick on the Pennine Way was certainly one of the biggest "wow" moments when I first saw it.

Whilst I would agree with High Cup, turning the corner and seeing Cauldron Snout for the first time was exceptional.

The other one that really sticks in my mind was when walking the SWCP.  It was a red hot day and just before Woolacombe I saw a peregrine falcon perched on a rock, as I turned the corner Woolacombe beach was before me with surfers catching the waves.  A memorable moment I guess more than a view but the one that reminds me a wonderful 630 miles!

The view from Monsal Head in the Peak District

Seeing the Crowns Engine Houses perched on the rugged cliff face at Botallack on the Cornish coast, one of the highlights of my walks on the SWCP

In Sussex the view of the Seven Sisters from Seaford Head and seeing the Beachy Head lighthouse from the shore

The best I have ever seen it was with a cloud inversion  filling it to the foot of the cliffs but with no cloud out of the valley and snow on the tops to add the finishing touch.

Suilven and the Assynt hills. No landscape quite like it in the UK.

I also love looking across from the west of Orkney on a clear day, and seeing the distant hills of the far North stretching out towards Cape Wrath - Ben Klibreck, Ben Loyal, Ben Hope, Cranstackie/Beinn Spionnaidh, and sometimes even the hills near Cape Wrath if I am lucky.

The Falkirk Wheel is amazing, but The Kelpies took my breath away the first time that I saw them..

From the top of Draycott sleights, looking out over the Bristol Channel, then round to Exmoor and the Quantocks, then the Somerset Levels and Glastonbury Tor.

With the sun setting it is just unbeatable!

Y Garn in Snowdonia on a clear day has to be up there, Snowdon and its train to the west amongst others, Tryfan, the cantilever, Llyn Idwal and Ogwen to the south and the Carneddau to the east.... shame that Elidir Fawr is obscuring the view of the whole of Anglesey to the north. .. Its only drawback in my opinion.

Have to agree with High Cup Nick. Lets not tell too many of the “general public” about it though! The view of the Border Hotel in Kirk Yetholm is a pretty good sight too!  ;D
