I've one simple principle when hiking in the Mournes: when the skies are blue, climb one of the seven sevens. This week-end saw me take in the third highest mountain, Slieve Binnian, 747m. The route was circular. Slieve Binnian is also the biggest mountain in the range. Starting from Carrick Little I followed the path beside the Mourne wall to the south tor. Took me 1.5 hours to reach the summit. After admiring the views of the Silent Valley I headed across the broad ridge of the back castles towards the north tor. I think the ridge is best walked in this direction as you are walking into the best scenery offered by the eastern Mournes. Upon reaching the north tor, views opened up of Ben Crom reservoir. Turning right I made my way back to Carrick Little car park along a good track. Total distance was 11.5km.

Great pictures, Henry, as always - looks like perfect walking weather. Love the blue of the water in the reservoir and the vistas of the mountains are just beautiful!  O0

Yep, Binnian is definitely on my to do list but it now looks like it will be 2018 before I get there.

Meanwhile please keep the TR's rolling in Henry. Well appreciated.

Thanks Penygadair and adalard :) . Binnian is the best walk in the Mournes IMHO and is always reserved for a blue sky day :)

I had this photo listed as Silent Valley

Only been to The Mourne Mountains once, just checked my diary to see what we did.

First day we did Sleive Lamagan, Cove Mountain, Chimney Rock Mountain.

On the second day we did Slieve Binnian, Slieve Muck, Carn Mountain, Slieve Loughshannagh, Slieve Meelbeg, Slieve Meelmore, Slieve Bearnagh, Slieve Commedagh, Slieve Donard.

The place reminded me of Arran

Thanks April, couldn't agree more. Have you found blue sky days few and far between this year? I've yet to have a clear day in the Lakes out of six days this year and in the Mournes there have been far more low level walks than higher level walks :(
