secret cave near black moss pot.
« on: 11:43:14, 24/06/13 »
i only first heard of black moss pot last year when i picked up a hitchhiker who was on his way to Keswick, he also told me about the 'not so secret' cave. he only went as far as to say it was somewhere near black moss pot.

after googling BMP then locating it on my map i went for a stroll up there to see if i could find it as it's also hidden from view. anyway i found the pool, but was on the wrong side of the water to look for the cave, although ive now got a good idea of where to start searching next week.

i was just wonering if any of you folk had either heard of, looked for or found the cave?

i dont want directions as that would just take away the fun of hunting for it.   :)

EDIT; sorry i should have mentioned, i meant up Langstrath valley in Cumbria.

It just so happens (weird this is!) someone mentioned this to me yesterday. Apparently it is very difficult to find but it is on the right hand side of the beck as you travel from Stonethwaite. I'd not heard of it before but we were talking about wild camping, bothies, huts and then this cave in Langstrath came up. I didn't get any more info than that though, I hope you find it  :)

Trail magazine had an article about it around 10 years ago - I believe that led to some vandalism.

black moss pot, just a pity it wasn't a nice enough day for a swim, some idiots had recently camped, had a fire and left rubbish strewn everywhere. used what little room we had in our packs to take what we could but it was still a bloody mess.

this pic below is where I thought the cave was at first...

but I need to be heading slightly further up...

Smokie, I hope you have (or had) a goodtime and good luck finding the cave  O0

well April, i set off just after 12:30 and got there at 2:30 due to members of the blue rinse crew doddering along at 25mph  ::)

hunted around for 4 hours to no avail, i thought i'd found the back passage (ooer missus) at one point underneath a tree but it was just the entrance to a mini little cave thing where someone had built a little dry stone type wall covering the hole, swines  ;D .

id read that the cave was built into some sort of rock fall, and there's a big one at the foot of the crag so that's where i concentrated the search. i pretty much covered every inch of it so i can only assume it's further up but to be honest anything above there seems maybe a bit steep, who knows?

i'm at work now so im not sure if i can post pics from here, if not i'll do them tonight  O0
