Title: What walks have you got planned?
Post by: MartinN on 12:37:20, 04/10/06
For myself I'm off to the lake District in November and then next year, probably Jan or Feb off to do the WHW. In the summer would like to get back out to the French Alps for a week to do more of the GR5 or explore above Cham.

What have you got planned for the next 12 months?

I would be interested to know if you do any training for your trips as well?

Thanks

Martin

Well hopefully were going to do the Ribble way at some point either this year or early nxt year but just done the Yorkshire  three peaks at the weekend and this weekend were of to do Thor's Cave which should be good. Than after that were off to do Cadir idris so got a few things planned also fancy doing the cuckoo way which is only 46 miles from chesterfield to West Stockwith if you fancy a short walk and only got a few days to spare. But that about it just a few things

I haven't really got much planned until next spring.

I'm planning to do a week of walking in Snowdonia in April, and then going on an organised holiday in Morocco in July.

I'm looking forward to both, and considering the week in Wales as "training" for Morocco.

I'll be trying to do a few weekend walks over the Winter, too, to keep my fitness up.

What sort of training do you do?

I plan to do Cautley Spout and the Calf (Howgills) and Blencathra (lakes) next week. Over winter I will mostly be walking locally, Thievley Pike, Lad Law, Pendle and that kind of thing. I will be going to the Alps skiing and cycling and swimming to keep fit. Next summer thinking about Hadrians Wall and lady Ann Clifford Way

Hi Windyport

Sounds like you've got some good trips planned.

As for the training that rather depends on what time I have available. At weekends I try to get up onto the Ridgeway twice for around 2-4 hours at a time. During the week if its light enough when I get home theres a hill close by that I reps on. Always take my 60L rucksack packed full. Sometimes try to run at lunchtime at work, (which is not nice as there is no shower) and now trying to get back into bouldering.

Just over a month until I get up to the Lake District, can't wait.

Just done the three peaks (Yorkshire).  Hopefully going to do the ribble way and the cuckoo way also would like to the ridgeway at some point within the next year i fancy camping on top of Ben Nevis for a few days in the winter time which should be fun.

Hi,

Well I'm quite lucky as I live only 20 minutes away from a beautiful National Park so I can often go on many spur of the moment walks.

I haven't done much walking in the UK as I moved out to Hungary a few years ago, I love it here....it is just so beautiful. I wish everyone could come and see it and realise what a gem it is here, quiet, not to many tourists, clean, good fresh air and untouched.

If you need any more info please just ask.

Anyway, I will be back in the Uk in the summer and would like to do a 3-4 hour walk somewhere within an hours drive of Northampton. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks
T

Next walk is again an easy one. Taking in a few caves and stone circles. Plus it's about 90 minutes on the western leg then back to the car, then about the same on the eastern leg and back to the car. So should be able to travel light.

Harthill and Stanton moor is the location.

We're varying things at the mo, to get some walking where there are other things to see as well as the challenge and the views.

Working well so far.

Edale and Castleton after that and later in the year the North Yorkshire Moors and Dales for a week. Still not decided on the Ladder yet for Edale and Castleton.

Dazza, you lucky devil!

I'd love to be able to take in a walk that links up stone circles, but not much of that around Yorkshire way.  I did a strange little walk last weekend (around Flamborough, East Yorks) that linked a stone monolith with an 18th C 'temple' (Carnaby temple, folly built in 1770), a nice amble.

Next bank holiday weekend, I'm taking a pal of mine over the last forty miles of the Wolds Way, I'm hoping to do 20 miles a day - for me this is some achievement, but I only have three days to play with and want to have at least one day to recover before going back to work.

Am out this weekend as well, a circular walk, only 8 miles or so, but I'm taking my two little boys with me (4 & 6) and so want to do something mild :)

Tracey777, there are plenty of good walks around the Northamptonshire area (I live in Northampton).  The Lyveden Way is a good 9-10 mile jaunt (detailed PDF here http://www.gnn.gov.uk/imagelibrary/detail.asp?MediaDetailsID=127354).

There's also some intesting walks around Naseby (lots of history etc) too.  You also have the Grand Union Canal and I can recommend walking some of this (Blisworth to Cosgrove is a good stretch) although it really depends on whether you're looking for a linear or circular walk.

Give me some more detail and I'll try to recommend something.

Ive got the West Higland Way coming up in July, really lokking forward as its my first long distance walk. Planning to do it in 5 maybe 6 days then Ben Nevis and Carn Mor Deag at the end if we're not dead ;D

Had a weekend in Northumberland earlier this year - did some pretty awesome walks around the Border Ridge and Windy Gyle. Beautiful part of the world.

Dazza - Edale and Castleton  :) :) love it.

I'd love to be able to take in a walk that links up stone circles, but not much of that around Yorkshire way.

Am out this weekend as well, a circular walk, only 8 miles or so, but I'm taking my two little boys with me (4 & 6) and so want to do something mild :)

Living slap bang in the middle of the country does have some advantages. Derbyshire Dales practically on the doorstep, South Yorks not far either. The lakes obviously are a different story.

Given that Yorkshire is absolutely huge, the walk I describe in 'Right then' is a few miles south west of Sheffield. The walk we're going to do is further south (but not by much) near Darley Dale. The Nine Ladies stone circle is to the East and to the West is a less famous, but more impressive, one (pity it looks like you can't actually go right up to it). I'll post the pics when weve done it.

One walk around Lathkill we came very close to Arbor Low but didn't even realise!

If you haven't seen many stone circles I guess you've not seen many sights like below.

There was a campfire in the middle of the circle and it's near vehicle access so I guess they stayed the night. Obviously someone is wishing for a baby (thankfully they didn't leave any evidence of their attempts). The offering was left at the western principal stone so it get the morning sun. And if I've got that dead wrong apologies all round.

What on earth are they, little burgers or something?  ???

At first I thought they looked like the full moon, half moon and so on, but now I'm not so sure.  I'm all for alternative beliefs, but come on - give me something to go on!  ;)

At the stone monolith I visited last weekend there were several candles, but I just took these for a gentle display of homage ... but burgers??

We didn't touch them but they looked to be made of some kind of meat.

IIRC the moons represent the maiden, mother and the crone (or the other one as Mr Pratchett call it). The circle of life. The other figure shouldn't need much explanation really being a pretty famous fertility symbol. The moons are a little unformed but them I suppose making symbols out of raw meat isn't high on most art courses agenda.

Not seen candles yet, but then we went probably a week or so before any meetings.

Dazza, excellent stuff, mate ...

Post more pics in the "Photography" section when you do your Darley Dale hike.  If you get one of a trail going past a standing stone then that'd be great (hey, pictures to order!  ;D), you know something like Avebury.

You've got me thinking now about linking my walks with interesting land features and oddities.  I'm a bit of a dunce, so when I've learnt how to shrink my pictures so that I can post 'em on here, I'll post a few  ;)

I will do. The less fanous stone circle is probably the biggest free standing circle (arbor low have done what I do on Friday nights - fall over). Coupld of caves and standing stones as well. The nine ladies isn't quite as impressive. But yeah I'll post some pics.

With my walks, I like to have one set and ready to go (in my own case the last 40 miles of the Wolds Way over two days on the coming bank holiday), and one festering.

I'm thinking of a 20 mile hike over the Flamborough headland, from good ole Brid to Filey, but it's a little awkward for public transport.  Am doing it with a pal who can drive, and so will probably just park the car in Brid and catch a bus back, all depends really.  I like cliff walking, some really nice views, though I've not managed to catch of the "sea fog" that Summitzero referred to elsewhere.

Hm, I really enjoy coastal walks.  I love being exposed to the elements and the sounds of the sea, especially if the weather is a little fresh!

I've just managed to blag the Missus into going for a walk this weekend as well.  An eight mile circular in Nth Yorkshire, centering around a disused chapel (Cottam chapel for those of yuo who wish to Google it).

Think I'll do it in full kit, to practice for my longer walk next weekend.

Enjoy your trip this weekend, Dazza, and don't forget those pics  ;)

Hi

This  week I'm off with groups to Penne, Abruzzo, Italy.

Were hiking at high and low level.

Walks include seeing high level mountain lakes, Stunning mountain castles, and ancient roman fountains.

My training involves eating lots of Italian food, and getting out and doing those walks!

Well we did it, so I'll be posting to the peak district topic in the next day or so.

Fabulous weather, not as challenging as I'd have liked though.

Did you go up near Arbor Low?  I was looking at the circle on the net t'other day, and I see what you mean about having fallen over, interesting 'fan' effect, must've been quite something in its time.

I did a eight mile circular yesterday, linking a bizarre tower named Tatton Sykes Monument, and the deserted Cottam chapel.

Looking forward to your pics.  ;)

Got some very nice pictures which I'll be attending to soon.

I haven't been to Arbour Low for many years. It's actually fairly difficult to incoporate into a circular walk without large road sections, and you can't really park there either.

Will maybe visit it on the way to something else.

A bit of a preview. The entrance to Stanton Moor is below.

I was supposed to be hiking the last 40 miles of the Wolds Way last bank holiday, but my walking companion didn't feel up to it, so instead we hiked up the East coast from Bridlington to Filey, still a good 20 mile stroll.  ;D

I'm writing up an account of it now, but really want to include a map guide - could just say "keep the sea on your right", but it doesn't really have the same effect.  So I'll wait to see what I can come up with first ...

Thanks for the advice for taking regular breaks, worked a treat.  I would usually just flop onto the nearest bank of grass when exhaustion takes over, but this way, it would cast life back into tired limbs.

The main lesson I learnt from this experience was not to walk on stoney beaches!  A pain in all respects!  >:(
Title: Re: What walks have you got planned?
Post by: Dazza on 20:31:00, 08/05/07
Sounds good and I look forward to seeing the write up.

Stony beaches, yeah not my favourite surface (my favourite surface is the approach to a bar).

We usually take a break every hour or so for ten-fifteen minutes, depending. If somethings been strenuous (and it doesn't take much) then we'll collapse somewhere inconspicuous so we don't look tired and [censored] out when someone passes (cos you know we have our pride).

My next walk I'll try and get in shot (I'm more of a behind the camera guy), so you can run away if you see me coming.

In regard to pictures, same here, I feel silly saying to my mate - "Here, take a quick picture of me!"  ::)

I'm not kidding about the stoney beaches, they were a proper killer.  We were hiking up the coast, and asked a couple of walkers what the path was like a little further up - "Make it easy on yourself," they said, "stay away from the cliff tops and walk on the beach, wish we had!"  So we did, for 4 miles!  Nothing but stones (and the occassional fallen World War II look-out post).  I felt thoughroughly p**sed off by the end, which was a shame as it was the last four miles of the walk.  Oh well, live and learn.  :D

I'm at work at the mo, but I'll post a couple of taster pcitures when I get back home, might even post a picture of a seal we saw!  ;)

Well we usually take two camera's, so he's in shot on some of mine, I;m in shot on some of his. I'd post that one (set my avatar) but frankly that one is too embarrasing. Ofcourse getting someone else to take the picture solves that one as you get two cringeworthy expressions for the price of one.

Cool. Looking forward to it.

Well Castleton didn't happen, cos the car which was supposed to be ready early on wasn't. Still Castleton and edale aren't going anywhere soon.

As the weather looks a bit 'undecided' this weekend we're looking at somewhere else (plus have some approach shoes to break in, so nothing too heavy). Plus I'm not a huge fan of realy strong winds (I need to held onto whats left of my hair - at 35 as well it's a crime!)

Two possibles Froggat / Curbar Edge and Bigmoor or Eyam Moor with maybe a trip to the village after we've finished. We'll check the forecast and make a decision after a few beers Friday night.

Will do a report ofcourse.
Title: Re: What walks have you got planned?

It's disappointing when a walk doesn't come off, for whatever reasons.  I feel the same about my 40 hike that didn't quite pan out.  But as you say, the trail is still, it hasn't gone anywhere ..  ;)

I had a friend over last night, who's just moved to Leeds and has kindly offered to arrange a few walks in the Peaks, Dales and Moors, and so the Blister man might be walking west for a change .. will keep you posted on that  ;D

I'm a biy busy over the next few weeks, but I might (just might) be able to squeeze one more walk in.  There's a famous local walk, the Beverley 20, that begins virtually on my doorstep (well, the Humber Bridge anyway), and I might have a crack at that.  I'll have to see if I can squeeze a free day somewhere.

Alas, just not enough hours in the day or days in the week  ::)

I know what you mean about not enough hours in the day. I'd like to get out next week, but I'm on call unless some kind soul will swap with me.

We didn't complete the full walk we intended today, but I'll put a report up anyway. I was breaking in my NF Hedgehogs which aquitted themselves well, very comfortable. Was a little over 5 miles in total which is well down on what we normally do. You'll find out why when I post the report.

At some stage we'll be doing Curbar and Frogatt Edge. This was supposed to be a few weeks ago but weather (as we're all far too familiar with of late) stopped play. I'm on call now for a few weeks as well so unless we can get a week day in it'll be a while.

Instead I've posted a report a walk we did a while ago. One I rememebr very well as I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Well it's been two months or there abouts since our last trek out due to work commitments and the flipping weather.

So to break ourselves in gently we're doing a 6-7 mile jaunt on Kinder, going up the ladder.

If you see someone dying up there, don't worry it's only me. I always look like that.

Welcome to the forum kidstypike! Hope you enjoy it here.

After almost two months since our last walk (weather, work, and more weather) we did Kinder Scout going up the ladder (and down it again as it happened). So we've had two months off and getting unfit, so then we do that and walk much further than we intended to into the bargain.

When everything stops aching I'll post a report in the Peak District section.

Still my first mountain. So having celebratory drink or five, well it eases the pain. My excuse and I'm sticking to it.  ;D

Well we made it on Sunday. Not to exciting though. The wife wanted a valley walk but I managed to get her up Raven Crag (Thirlmere) first.

Now that the flood waters have started to drain away (still around in some areas of East Yorks  :-\), I'm planning on doing the 'Beverley 20' again. I cancelled it last time as basically, several of the villages en route were flooded out.

Either that, or I have my eye on the 'Minster Way'. I have crossed this path several times while being on other walks, and find it interesting. It starts at York Minster and travels the 50 miles of the Vale of York and the Wolds before arriving at Beverley Minster.  I have some time off work in the next couple of weeks, so I'll have to think about it.  O0

Hey, what about some short, but fast walks in the beautiful Goring Gap.
We have a thriving Health Walk group here with about 50 routes all starting from the same place - the village hall!
Lots of pubs, hills, great views AND both the Ridgeway and Thames Paths cross the Thames here. What more could you ask for?
The quicker walks are at the weekends. Why not join us?
Have a look at the web site. http://www.goringgapwalks.co.uk
