Title: TR Brun Clough Reservoir circular Tue 9 Jun 20
Post by: April on 16:58:18, 10/06/20
The first half of the walk is in the Peak District boundary but the second half isn't but I've put the whole TR in the Peak District section  :)

Our walk started from the Brun Clough Reservoir car park on the A62 near Marsden. We headed east on the Pennine Way.

Beefy recorded the route on Viewranger.

We went right to keep on the Pennine Way on the pitched path.

It was cloudy but not raining and not much wind. Not a bad day at all.

Binn Moor is the high ground

The paving was intermittent but the ground was very dry when there was none.

That is Wessenden Lodge below West Nab. What a great walk, hill views, moorland, reservoirs and this path down and through the clough was lovely.

We didn't follow the Pennine Way here but we took a path right that led into another clough

This was a lovely path too
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49990949866_6872ed6ce2_z.jpg) (http://)

You can just about make out the path on the other side of the clough in the shot

Lovely waterfall in the clough

We crossed the stream above a weir, easy because there wasn't much water in it.

New chairs  :)

Out of the clough we had views of Wessenden Lodge, Wessenden Reservoir and West Nab and it looked like a good spot for lunch. We have treated ourselves to new chairs, Helinox Zero's. They are 500g and expensive but we figure we will enjoy the 320g less weight when we are allowed to go wild camping again. They are not as comfortable as our other chairs but you do get used to them after 5 minutes and we are both very happy with them.

Deer at Wessenden Lodge

These are farmed deer rather than wild ones.

Great and Little Butterly Hills
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49990425458_64bda7d54c_z.jpg) (http://)

I spotted the spelling is different to Butterley Reservoir and also Blakely Clough as opposed to Blakeley Reservoir. I wonder why the reservoirs have an extra 'e'?

Lunch over we dropped down to Wessenden Reservoir crossed the dam and met up with the Pennine Way again.

Rhododendrons
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49991190972_69224aff92_z.jpg) (http://)

A notice informed us they were clearing invasive plants here and the invasive plants are the rhododendrons  :o I've noticed a lot of rhododendrons during the walks we've done in the last few weeks, I assumed they were native!

A clough, not sure which one

We were now on the Kirklees Way but we would meet up with the Pennine Way again later.

I am not sure what this sign refers to
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49991190537_6fddb98528_z.jpg) (http://)

I've not been able to find any information about it on the internet. Anyone know what it is about?

The path went through some abandoned mill buildings and then into Marsden, a lovely town which is in West Yorkshire. Looking at the map now, we'd crossed into West Yorkshire not long after we started our walk but we were in the Peak District National Park. Confusing  :D We had left the Peak District National Park boundary at the end of the Butterley Reservoir. I loved the old houses in the town and it had a nice feel about the place.

Standedge Tunnel end in Marsden
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49990423463_f836ba1fc2_z.jpg) (http://)

We walked along Waters Road but there was an off road path that led to where we were going that we could have used. Only one vehicle passed us though and it was easier walking on the road, we were beginning to tire.

Close Gate Bridge
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49990947051_a2a6d1d210_z.jpg) (http://)

We stopped for another brew and some food next to the stream and enjoyed the rest. We had a bit of a climb to do before we got back to the start.

We said hello and thanks to the two men doing the work. I asked if they were volunteers but no they were paid by a conservation company, they said. Not a bad office, in nice weather mind! Hard work though the stones must weigh a bit.

Looking back on the way up Willykay Clough
(https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/49990422673_ffe5a835ec_z.jpg) (http://)

We saw some paragliders to the right of us, I did take some photos but they weren't very good.

Packhorse Road post

There were quite a few of these along the route. The paving was intermittent but the path was clear on the ground when the paving stopped. It was dry too, I imagine it isn't always dry underfoot. This bit seemed to last forever but eventually we met up with the Pennine Way and headed south to Millstone Edge

15 minutes later we were back at Brun Clough Reservoir, what a grand walk this was. The route was Brun Clough Reservoir - Black Moss Reservoir - Blakely Clough - Weir and Ford below Wessenden Moor - Wessenden Reservoir Dam - Kirklees Way - Marsden - Standedge Tunnel End - Waters Road - Close Gate Bridge - Willykay Clough - Northern Rotcher - Millstone Edge - Brun Clough Reservoir 11.46 miles and 593m of ascent.

Lovely pics. Love the waterfall.
I see Squeaky has her coat back on.

E2A searched for info on the strange sign and the only reference I can find is someone on Reddit asking what it is but no answers.

It was  :) Interest all the way, even on the moorland bits  :)

I see Squeaky has her coat back on.

It was a bit chilly, we had our coats on all day too  :)

E2A searched for info on the strange sign and the only reference I can find is someone on Reddit asking what it is but no answers.

Yes, that is all I could find. Very odd sign  :-\

What a lovely walk, really varied

It was smashing  :)

Nice waterfall.

It was nice. Beefy said there is another one near Wessenden Lodge that you can see from the path but it was totally dry! I've googled for pics and it is impressive. Just shows how dry everything is.

Great walk and pics again  O0
Each one of these walks in the northern Dark Peak has made me look at the map again to refresh the memory, I'd forgotten where some of these landmark sights and reservoirs were it's been so long.

I'll bet there is a lot more paving than when we were there last.

Lovely pics and write up April  O0   The weather might have been a bit iffy but the scenery looks fantastic.

That sign?  I wonder if it's similar to those "on this site in 1906 absolutely nothing happened" type signs  :-\

I find there is something very relaxing about canals.  Wish I had walked them more when I lived up country.
Like like your chairs, very, very, similar to mine, but lighter.
How long was the walk?

We had other chairs that cost £28 but weighed 820g, we've had them a few years. Beefy's chair had broken so we both got new ones. We got them here

Mine mas a mass about 900g, why I am changing the aluminium legs to carbon fibre.  Mine costs 20 quid though.

I like walks of 10 to 12 miles, leaves enough time in the day to do other things.  Depending on how this summer seasons goes, I will probably be limited to shorter ones because work gets in the way.

Changed two sections as a test and they seem fine.
Shall order some more when I have decided on my 'other project involving CF tubes'.

Just intrigued where the weight saving is with your chairs.  The frame looks the same as mine, canvas a bit different.

The new chairs are smaller than our other chairs, they have shorter legs and a smaller seat size. The material is much lighter too.

It's a nice walk that I've done a few times (usually ending with a pint in Marsden). The last time was last year as a night walk, led by volunteers from Marsden Moor NT, starting at 11pm. We didn't have much moonlight, sadly, but it was a great experience.

Wow! a bit pricey. I suppose in the wild camping season April and Beefy use them 1 or 2 days every week so it is an investment.

I wonder if I'll ever look at the title of this thread and not think it says Brian Clough at first glance.

 ;D

We use them on day walks too. We reckon we will really struggle with carrying the gear when we do go wild camping after what seems years so any weight saving is welcome and worth the price  :)

I wonder if I'll ever look at the title of this thread and not think it says Brian Clough at first glance.

;D You have done it now, that is the reservoir's new name  :D

It's a nice walk that I've done a few times (usually ending with a pint in Marsden).

We walked by a pub in Marsden that beefy knew, a micro brewery. We would have went in if it wasn't closed  :)

Lovely pics again April! And this time I do remember some of those bits of the Pennine Way, we must have had good weather that day!  :D  I recall we sat and had our lunch near the bridge down by the stream which is just after you turned off the PW after Blakely Clough. I’ve found the photo that we took after we'd climbed back up the other side. Oh to be there now!
