New Facebook page NoGogondola
« on: 23:18:27, 13/08/18 »
There is a new facebook page see below

https://www.facebook.com/nogogondola.org/

The address is Thornthwaite so it looks like it has been set up by the villagers themselves. Please like and share their page to show them some support.

Thanks for the link April.  There was a guy from Thornthwaite at last week's Friends rally - he was very passionate and quoted the NoGo Gondola message.

Good luck to them.  They don't seem impressed with the offer of a free go on the gondola!!

I have a soft spot for Thornthwaite. The second time I came for a weeks holiday in the Lake District it was in a holiday let at Thornthwaite. It is a very pretty village, peaceful and quiet and this is how it should be left. Except for a gallery and teashop there is nothing else, no development, very like Thirlmere really in that respect. The footpath from Thornthwaite to Braithwaite that passes through Ladstock is a favourite of mine and I am horrified by the idea of gondolas spoiling this walk, spoiling the village and the whole of Whinlatter forest if the gondolas are going to be extended further. The people who live there must be so worried, I still can't get my head round this; it is the LDNP who are putting this idea of gondolas forward.

It's all part of the Local Plan Review by the LDPNA, so I can only assume that the ideas are coming from them.

Part of the plan is to "Showcase"specific areas of the Lakes, including places such as Keswick, Windermere, and Whinlatter.

More info here about it here:

Thanks for putting the link up Lakeland Lorry  :)

I wonder which company they have in mind to build and run the cable cars if this goes ahead?

I can think of one  :D

The idea that this is to relieve the traffic through Braithwaite is ludicrous. I just cannot see anyone paying to park in Keswick, then having to wait for a shuttle bus to Thornthwaite and then paying to get on a cable car. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to drive in a car to Whinlatter and there is ample parking at Whinlatter. They have an overflow car park there. When we have walked through it, it has never had more than a few cars in it.

Could the answer to that question have anything to do with a certain Mr Turnip Head, I wonder?!?!?  :D :D :D

Does Turner have that much financial clout?  I don't know what the costs are projected to be of building the gondola, but about 20 years ago I was told the cost per km of building a chairlift in the alps and it was an eye watering amount.  I suspect a bigger operator than Turner would be needed.

However it is also possible that this is a red herring designed to distract attention - certainly Douglas Chalmers mentioned this at the rally as a possibility.

Will like and share this.  Are they trying to turn the Lake District into a theme park? I think the powers that be want to get more people out exercising and they think that this sort of thing is the way to do it. It’s not! Get out and WALK (although not too many, we don’t want crowds of people spoiling our enjoyment!  ;D )

You could put money on that. How long would it take for this thing to pay for itself?  If the object is to lessen traffic through the area they could just run a shuttle bus up to the visitor centre.  Or are they suggesting there is a tourist demand to take a trip up to the summit of er.... Hospital Plantation?

The more I think about Thirlmere, about stringing wires across a low-level flight path, the more I'm pushed towards the conclusion that no sane person could ever have thought that was a good idea.  But TTT, having been kicked out of Patterdale, tell us they spent three years resarching before deciding Thirlmere was the 'perfect place' for that operation.   I'm not buying it.

:) He is at the top of my list of would be Lake District Destroyers

It might be a joint venture between Turnip Head and an unknown Potato Head?

I remember you mentioned this when you came back from the rally. Why on earth would the LDNPA do this though? It makes them even more irresponsible, if they don't think this will ever happen, why cause so much worry and stress to the village of Thornthwaite and to all who go walking there and up to Whinlatter?  :-\

Will like and share this.

Article in The Times today

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/whinlatter-cable-car-plan-rocks-the-lake-district-zgmwhc6mx

Probably being naughty but I've copied and pasted the wording below.

Whinlatter cable car plan rocks the Lake District
Campaigners claim that a cable car meant to improve access for visitors would spoil views from Latrigg, overlooking Keswick in the Lake District
Conservationists in the Lake District are preparing to fight plans for a ski lift-style cable car only months after defeating proposals to build a zip wire. The Lake District National Park Authority argues that a cable car would allow more visitors to access a beauty spot near Keswick without clogging nearby roads with more cars.

The cable car plan is part of the authority’s “vision” for the national park over the next 15 years but is strongly opposed by Friends of the Lake District, which warns of “wholly inappropriate aerial infrastructure . . . visible from iconic viewpoints such as Latrigg and Dodd Fell”.

Annual tourist numbers in the Lake District have risen from 15.8 million in 2009 to 19.2 million last year. Friends of the Lake District says that the cable car would attract even more visitors, ruining the national park’s tranquillity and threatening its status as a World Heritage Site.

The authority’s draft local plan refers to “significant opportunities for intensification” of an existing visitor centre at Whinlatter Forest, which is popular with walkers and mountain bikers. It notes that the extra visitors could have an impact on Braithwaite village and to avoid this a “gondola” could be built from the A66 to the visitor centre.

Visitors would be able to park in Keswick, four miles away, possibly reaching the cable car via a shuttle bus.The document adds that the new “mountain centre” might include viewing stations, a dark-skies observatory, cycle tracks, and leisure accommodation.

Douglas Chalmers, chief executive of Friends of the Lake District, said: “There has been concern for some time that the Lake District National Park is becoming too commercialised. This feeling has increased in recent months.

Campaigners in Grizedale say the government’s plan to sell off Forestry Commission land will threaten the environment and economy
The landscape and the experiences [that the Lake District] provides are the attraction, and many tourism businesses benefit directly from this. It is what brings millions of visitors and supports tens of thousands of jobs, and those numbers continue to increase. Artificial attractions will not benefit, but actually will threaten our environment, our economy and our local communities.

“The government has recently launched a review of National Parks to ensure designated landscapes are fit for the future. They were set up for the wellbeing of the nation and that need may be even greater now.”
Steve Ratcliffe, director of sustainable development for the Lake District National Park, said it was working on the plans for Whinlatter with the Forestry Commission, which owns the land. He said a feasibility study was being conducted “to assess the potential impacts and benefits for the environment, communities and the economy”.

He added that the development “will need to be successfully assimilated into the forest landscape”.
The authority will publish a revised version of the 15-year plan next year and adopt it in 2020. Mr Ratcliffe said it was “critical for that plan to be forward-thinking”. He added: “I am particularly excited about alternative sustainable transport modes being put forward as part of the visitor experience.”

Friends of the Lake District said the cable car was “a tourist attraction in its own right rather than a radical traffic solution”.

It feels like coverage in the influential press and both saying it is ridiculous.  O0

I sometimes think that the LDNPA see their job as the preservation and promotion of the LDNPA.
