Gilets, useful or not?

Whoa! i never expected such a varied response, thank you all. I now must buy a Gilet!

I like a gillet. If it is a bit windy but not cold enough to wear a jacket, a gillet keeps my body warm and I don't get sweaty because my arms are free. I like minimal clothing while walking and a gillet is easy to slip on when a jacket is not needed.
