Crinkle crags route
« on: 14:02:21, 09/08/17 »
hi
Thanks to some guys on the forum I have found out that to go up the crinkle craggs bad step I need to go south to north. I have vertigo so strong preference for doing it this way round. But all route descriptions I can find describe going the other direction (stool farm/climbers traverse or the band/ bowfell /double back to crinkle crags/return home. Is there a reason for this? Is going down the band or climbers traverse unpleasant?im happy to follow a map rather than route directions but just wanted to check there wasn't a reason why people avoided doing this route clockwise thanks

Here is a route I did.  Crinlke Crag S to N as required, no Climbers Traverse or Slab, comes down the Band.

Hi - I did a very similar route to ninthace's a few weeks ago with a couple of friends, one of whom does not like exposed routes and all was fine - in fact hardly noticed the bad step.

You can bypass the bad step if you don't want to do it either up or down. There is a route that bypasses it on the west side of the fell, on the left if you are doing the ridge south to north or on the right if you are going north to south. It's in the AW Pictorial Guide for Crinkle Crags if you have access to it.

If you're going across the crinkles from red tarn direction the bad step is really obvious from the second peak and you can clearly see the path that goes round to the left of it. I only know myself because we went over the bad step yesterday. It wasn't too bad. Once we worked out the right way to get up it. I'm not sure I'd be as happy doing it in reverse but we watched someone come down it which was pretty impressive to me.

There are a number of Youtube videos showing the route such as this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9FHq2t8oNs and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7HsszR79W0
The route up is on the right hand side as you enter the cleft, in fact if you walk in too far, which is the natural thing to do, it's "behind you!"
Despite some of the videos making it look hard, it really isn't.

If you don't fancy it the by pass is to the left is visible at 0:36 in the first video above.

That's exactly what we tried to do at first. It looks much more natural to try and go over the chock stones but after a few moments of feeling around and thinking about it it was obvious we were barking up the wrong tree. Even though there looks to be little to hold on to its a fairly easy stretch and pull up over the route once confident you're in the right position to continue upwards.

There is a route that bypasses it on the west side ...

And also on the right - easy series of grass shelfs between outcrops. Ideal for dogs.
