Hi could any one say if this jacket is any good for light walks;

https://www.outdoorandcountry.co.uk/mens-barbour-linton-waterproof-jacket.html [nofollow]

It is 100% Polyester (PU Laminated). I dont know if its more for fashion. My limit is between £200-300

I like it to be a bit for fashion as i need it for a all round jacket for going for walks in town and small light mountain walks. Also needs to be good for summer and winter. Also needs to be breathble as i am a very warm blooded person and sweat easily. Hope this old noob makes sense.

Kind regards

Also may i add i dont want a wax barbour.

Given your spec...want to use it all year round..you sweat easily, etc...it's way too bulky and warm, logically it shouldn't be on your short list, i suspect.

It's more type of jacket somebody might use outside summer for country activities (e.g. birdwatching) that don't generate much heat. You'd roast in it, even walking up a gentle slope, even on a cool-isa day.

I suspect in summer it would be too warm even for birdwatching.

Most walkers go for a much lighter external shell, then add extra layers (such as a thin fleece) when weather gets colder. That's a far more flexible system than a one piece coat that's very warm by itself.

200 to 300 quid is a lot of dosh for a walking jacket, you could get something from any of the top walking brands for that. Best "strategy" is to find a specialist walking retailer you can get to, ask for advice, and try lots of stuff on till you find something you really like. Reputable top-end walking brands include Rab, Montane, Mountain Equipment, Paramo. And doubtless subsequent posters will add a few more.

Ok thank you for the quick reply. I phoned john lewis and they recommend me this jacket:

Its much lighter and i was told by the other seller that it would be a good choice since i over heat a lot. Does this seem a good choice, if not i may just pop in go outdoors

It's not one I'd consider.

But I'm far from expert on walking jackets...last one I bought was around 5 years ago, and my "spec" is a wee bit different to yours.

You could certainly do worse than pop over to "Go outdoors", they have a wide range of stuff to try on, and they are competitive on price. But quite often their staff expertise is pretty hit and miss.

I'd make two suggestions:-

Put something like "best walking jacket" in search box for this site...you'll find a lot of helpful past threads that way.

Post an idea of your location, there's a fair chance some member will be able to recommend a good local specialist retailer.

I'd agree with Paul.
Barbour are fashion jackets.
You'd melt into a puddle before getting up a hill in one of those. I'm not sure John Lewis would have skilled enough staff on walking to recommend anything for the activity?

I'd consider 2 jackets, one for each purpose to be honest.
you would get more help at Go Outdoors or other real outdoor activity shops.

No, I don't agree with youon one point pauldawes, Barbours can be fashion jackets, but their working range is excellent. Well made, robust and fit for the job. HOWEVER, that job is working out in the open, or even walking the dog or doing your 4 miles per day type of walking where you may stop to chat with your acquaintances. Good quality , very long lasting jackets.

But I do agree with you on the two jacket scenario, and going to a good shop like Go Outdoors for a good choice, suitable for long distance walking. Barbours are not meant for LDW.

Have to agree with most of what's been said so far.

Barbour originally made their name with their wax jackets but today a lot of their clothing range is vastly overpriced for what it is, not very technical and is now seen as much more of a "fashion" brand name mostly worn by the horsey country set, country show visitors and the hooray henry types who generally have more money than sense.

In the case of the Barbour Linton jacket you can probably find something very similar and of equal quality from the likes of Craghoppers, Regatta or other budget brands for a quarter of that price or even less - in effect you are paying £100-£150 for the Barbour badge and brand name. For your £200-£300 budget you should easily be able to buy separate summer and winter jackets.

Looking at your other thread Go Outdoors, Blacks and Cotswold Outdoors all have branches in Cardiff that you could visit in one hit and have a good look at what's available and try some on.

Don't be in a rush to buy - find what you like and what size you need it in and then check online for the best price before you splash the cash.

Go Outdoors will price match and beat any other UK VAT registered seller by 10% who has the same item in the same  size and colour in stock. http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/price-guarantee

I don't believe I could ever be described as part of the horsey set, or as a hooray Henry.  I may qualify as a country show visitor because I love tractors and steam traction engines.

Barbour wax jackets, not suitable for LDW, are well made non showy bits of clothing, unusually still made in the UK, unlike their fashion wear. The cost is probably reflected in the fact that they pay their British workers the going rate  and do not exploit Asian or Eastern European children in their factories. Mine has lasted winter wear for over a twenty years now. A local small shop rewaxes it as and when required.

Still have to say that I agree with everything else stated for long distance  walking jackets.

If anybody wants a really good wax jacket or coat at sensible value, consider the Australian Driza-bone range. Heavier cotton and much cheaper than Barbour. I've bought my wife various ¾ length and full length coats over the years. She loves them.

It has no hood. Can't see the point of a rainproof jacket without a hood.
