What Animal Did This?
« on: 16:11:09, 09/12/17 »
I was out walking in Nottinghamshire and I discovered a dead sheep at the side of the path. I have never seen anything like this before...everything had been devoured - such a neat and efficient job too. I'm wondering what animal, or animals, could have done this?

Badger or Fox.My money would be on a badger as others in the sett would most likely feed on the carcass and strip it bare.

Whatever killed it and fed on in it the first place, crows would clean off any remaining scraps, or birds of prey such as buzzards for example. I don't know if you have red kites in that area, they're scavengers.
Hope you weren't going to have roast lamb for Sunday dinner :D

Looking at the ribcage it reminded me of Barnsley chop.

Fox family I reckon.

The moral of the tale is not to peg out on the hills -  humans are equally good eating..

You're not speaking from experience, I hope.

No, but in the early Victoriuan days of hill walking quite a number of 'explorers' lost their lives in Cader Idris.

Invariably when found there was a limb missing.

Werewolf or velociraptor.

None of those about.   :)

Some blamed it on the legendary Green Man of Gwernan Lake who was reputedly rather fond of Englishmen - especially the plump well fed rosy cheeked variety.

Yum yum.  :D

....And, famously there was the artist, Gough, who expired following a fall on Striding Edge.  His faithful pooch, Foxie, sat by him, with the duo being found 3 month later, by which time Gough's corpse was a pile of bones

The romantics celebrated Foxie's loyalty.
Landseer painted the scene.
Cynics observed that Foxie, who'd had a pup,  was healthily plump and had almost certainly scoffed her master https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2003/mar/15/art.artsfeatures

Same for walking in an area with Griffin Vultures.

Said to strip a carcass in hours!

And the are in Europe, so be careful!

Saying that once dead, would you care?

But  if your alive but unable to move!

Think of the lambs and sheep with no eyes!
