Basic Campsite
« on: 23:08:54, 28/08/19 »
hi I’m pretty new to walking, but this weekend I’m heading to the Lake District. I’m trying to find a basic campsite to use as a base. However this is proving quite hard, in an ideal world it would be a pitch in a farmers field with the toilet and tap. Where would I find such a place? It seems that everybody on the Internet and is offering electric hook up for caravans And children’s play areas!

Any advice will be greatly received and appreciated, thanks Jim

First of all, welcome to the forum!

I've stayed at a number of sites over the years; here's a selection:

Wasdale Head - the field opposite the Inn, not the National Trust site amongst the trees. Not the quietest of spots but amongst some of the most dramatic mountains in the Lakes. It is still pretty cheap.

Turner Hall Farm, Dunnerdale (a mile north of Seathwaite) - there's a special atmosphere about Dunnerdale, and good walking from the site. Also - Newfield Inn is just a mile down the road.

Moss Howe Farm, Witherslack, in the South East Lakes -  stayed here for a week in July, a really chilled out site in a lovely spot. Camp fires allowed! Lower level walking in limestone country. Food and beer in nearby Derby Arms excellent.

Forgot one, the community pub in Ennerdale. I've stayed there twice, once by the river, 75 yds from the pub for £0 and the second time in their pub garden for £5, it might have been £3, just can't remember exactly.

Yes, Stonethwaite, I stayed at Chapel House Farm. The YHA in one direction and two pubs nearby, or is it three?

Depends on how much you had to drink and how far you walked  ;)

The site in Buttermere village is worth a mention too. A beautiful spot, and so many options for walks from the site, high and low level.
