Wonder if it'll be a lot easier following in all the tracks than say the front few who are making the tracks, could well be some places made up over the cheviots!
"if in doubt, flat out"

On FB there's a suggestion about it being to do with snow goggles. But I think that is in comments rather than anything official...

I have wondered though, when looking at the small size packs some of the runners have, how on earth they manage to get all the required equipment into them. The mandatory list is quite comprehensive... I expect they will select the most lightweight compact stuff they can find, but even so, some of their packs are miles smaller than my day sack.

The simplest answer is they don't.  Full winter kit takes up quite a lot of pack space, not to mention the runners have support teams who will carry spares for them. I imagine being able to strip out 1-3kg represents a few percent weight reduction for many of these guys.  Over the course of several days that will be the difference between a top finish and being in the pack.

I am sure the rule is that they do carry it all although clearly they will be wearing a lot of it.

232 retiring by Cow Green Reservoir.

He took 50 minutes to get up Cauldron Snout, it must have been treacherous.

Now in a car progressing north at 19.00.  Well done, you have my and all the other settee watchers our admiration.

Pav still making heavy weather of the final stretch, the worse bit for me was getting down from Auchope Cairn to Hut 2 - really steep, I went down sideways!  If it is thick snow perhaps he will go down on his backside.

I see Pav is at the Auchope Hut now. I've been looking at his mileage since 11am, about 14 miles. That is approx. 1.8 mph. The snow must really be deep and hard going, at least the exertion will keep him warm the wind chill must be well below freezing.

Crikey, he didn't stop long, he is on his way again! Incredible endurance.

Pav is past the 2nd refuge hut, I didn't think he would finish before midnight but he might if the path from the border crossing to KY is "reasonable".

The 2nd and 3rd place individuals are going slower than Pav but he had a good nights sleep and food at Byrness!

I should imagine that is down to snow conditions being worse on the stretch to hut1 than they are on the ridge. Both those runners looked in good shape and good spirits earlier so it must be down to hard going rather than exhaustion or injury.Pav was very quick on the ridge.

That stretch to Hut 1 goes over quite a lot of broken, uneven land (esp if they went round the top of Chew Green). In deep snow that would be awkward ground to cover...ankle breaking stuff. Whilst the slopes are bigger on the ridge the path itself is more even pace for pace ( if that makes sense). Just had a look at the FB footage..looks tough......

From the top of the Schill it's pretty much down hill all the way, except that killer road up from the Halterburn.  Sure Pav will be at KY before bed time!
