Brecon beacons transport query
« on: 21:45:12, 17/07/19 »
Hi All, I'm planning to visit Brecon Beacons next year and was wondering if anyone knows anything about airports, train stations, bus timetables and where to stay in this area? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Henry

If your able to drive, then my only suggestion is to arrange a hire car during your visit.
Due to the location of the Beacons, public transport is not ideal, with the nearest railway stations some way from the hills themselves, so if you do not have your own transport during your visit, it will require the use of expensive taxis.

As for airports, the nearest one is well over 50miles away, the other end of Cardiff, so its pointless even considering it.

The only real option, is to hire a car, and if you do not drive, then using public transport will not be easy.

The accommodation is very straight forward, as there are numerous Youth Hostels and B+Bs in and around the Brecon and Merthyr areas, but the only issues i can for see, is access to the hills.

It can be done, but your so reliant on the punctuality of the local buses, that its possible that you may miss  the bus through no fault of your own.

If you can drive, hire a car, it will make your visit a lot easier, and you will see so much more.

As DA said a car would be best, the bus service is ok though and stop at Storey Arms from where you can head up to the central Beacons or Fforest Fawr on the other side of the road. Try www.stagecoachbus.com for a bus timetable, alternatively there is a train station at Abergavenny if the Black Mountains area is to your taste, much quieter too.
Touching from a distance, further all the time.

Henry---- depends where you're coming from. Cardiff is the the closest airport, but not many flights

Otherwise, you've two railheads: Cardiff, or Abergavenny, which is on the Newport to Shrewsbury line.

You then depend on buses from Cardiff and Abergavenny to Brecon. Services are about hourly, but apt not to connect with the train. Abergavenny bus station is 10-15 minutes from the train station; in Cardiff the stop is near the station but finding it is a pain.

A classic crossing is train to Cardiff, bus (the one that goes to Brecon) to Storey Arms, which is the hostel on the top of the pass over to Brecon.  Up Pen Y Fan with the crowds ... who gradually thin out as you follow the ridge eastwards, always keeping to the height of the land ... then drop to Tal-y-bont, where you can catch the bus to Abergavenny, with connections to Newport and back to Cardiff.  It takes 5-6 hours at a decent pace and i've done it many times even a day trip from London.

If you're staying for several days, then Brecon or Abergavenny are the obvious bases, or Crickhowell, which is between them.   Brecon probably gives you more options --- e.g. bus to Talgarth, then go up onto the Black Mountains and follow the ridge down to Crickhowell, picking up the Abergavenny to Brecon bus.
