After the Fairfield walk last week I was thinking of starting a similar post.

I was the slowest walker and I think some others could have done that walk in one hour less, and the rest 30 minutes less, or maybe 90 minutes and 60 minutes. My problem was on the uphill sections (no hills near me at all). I didn't have muscle aches next day and was surprised my arms were OK despite using walking poles. When we left MadMax's Tea Rooms I had no problem walking fast with Radder and Pearsy to the pub! I accept I am 3 stone over ideal weight and was probably the oldest.

If we are grading the comfortable speed of walkers I would put Radder, Peakbagger and (since he got fitter) Cogstar as "grade 1" and all the rest grade 2. I would be grade 3, where you put youreslf A-J. I might have got some wrong there but I don't see this as a competition.

We started that walk at about 9.30 am and finished around 4.30 pm. I would have found it easier if we had started an hour earlier and taken an hour longer but I suspect that no-one else on that walk would have wanted to do that. I fully accept that it is up to me to get fitter. I note that on the upcoming Kentmere meet Pearsy wrote

"Its a tough one this folks, lots of ups and downs and a long way, you have been warned and it can be extremely boggy in places, there is a very steep climb up to Harter fell just after lunch and a tricky descent. Im not trying to put anybody off but if you havent been out since christmas it might be a bit much."

I think that is helpfull so newbies understand how hard the walk is and with Cogstar wanting to finish early then it is vital all going can walk at a very good place. Grade 2 walkers and above on our system.
Now I am sure A-J and I could get round this walk but it is not fair on those that want a quick walk for us to turn up and slow it down.

I would be very interested to find out how many of the other walkers on the Fairfield meet would have preferred to have walked at a slower pace.

Honestly Dellwalker , I just had a good day. I'm defo grade 2 and I promise i don't mind waiting in the slightest...I've had enough days at the back to know how it feels. I just wrap up warm and look around if I'm at the top first. As for Kentmere I'm probably going to do a shorter route to allow me to get back in time so no sprinting that day either.  For anyone who happens to be geeky and wants to get fitter for walking here's my tip. Write down everything you eat (its easier on a spreadsheet)and stick below 2500 cals per day on average. Then exercise a couple of times a week. It's each to their own but its working for me at the moment. Festival season will put a stop to that though in the summer.

I've written a 'MUST be more considerate' note on my hand for next time I have a good day. BUT did you see that Pete....I got a grade 1 haha

I can't have done any more walking than I've done this week.
I don't know how to get any fitter...

And I don't want to make myself ill by over doing it.

I've never had to think about how to keep fit before.

Can anyone give me any other tips?

Thanks for this...

And, let's put it this way.  I'm not going to put myself down for every meet up.. I'm going to try and work out which ones I think I can have a shot at.

[/quote]A big fat thumbs up on that from me too. I felt in the company of folks I'd never met before that I knew I could trust with my life - as I said on an earlier thread. That is something very valuable to me....I have often gone over that day, it is like a big dream... Might be my best walk of 2010!!!!  Thanks !

I'm a bit of a slowcoach. Last weekend we were going around 3.3 mph on the flat or downhill slopes but it's at least 1mph less going uphill. Average for the day was 2.7 and there were hardly any uphill bits but the going was very claggy in places which slowed us down. How far? My most ever is 16 miles and I'm hoping to biuld back up to that by the summer.

My colleagues and I regularly visit remote parts of India as part of fishing expeditions and to educate in these areas that have not been professionally fished by outsiders, sometimes we have to walk from lakes to lakes, as its almost impossible to take a car or motorbike, some walks are not long, id say about 6-10 miles max however, the terrain in these places can go from rocky mud mounds to suddenly all out swamp mud, it took us 7 hrs to cover 9 miles once to get from one village to another, there was also a jungle/forest between the two which made it worse. Ever since then we have learnt our lesson and are investing in better walking gear and training our fitness levels, i myself am in my 30's whereas my colleagues are pushing the 40 mark and above. i guess it can only get worse...  ;)

I wouldn't be too sure. Just look at Micky, when I first saw him on our Lakes meet I thought, hes a big bloke like me and he'll struggle, bet I'll have to pull him up the fells. But he is like a rocket and he has not been in his 30s for quite a while, I'm sure he wont mind me saying.

I guess there does come a time when we all start to tail off fitness wise but I think even into our 50s and maybe 60s we can still be up there or thereabouts. I did a walk up Buckden Pike in the Dales once and setting off with me was a guy on his 75th birthday  O0   I think chronological age is one of those false divisions that can fool us.....

Just keep going as long as you can. If I stopped to think that I wont have enough time to do all the Wainwrights or any of the Welsh mountains that I've seen on here, let alone get up to Scotland, I'd get depressed...

As I get older I get slower going up the fells  :P - more weight less speed. But in general I'm more interested in my surroundings than what speed I'm going at. Age is only relevant when you can't do it anymore - walking I mean O0 As for walking fitness - we all have to start somewhere.

On average I would say on decent ground where you can stride along 3mph would be a decent pace, 4 mph when you can really stride out. But in reality with stops to admire the views, take photo's, look at rocks, plants etc the actual average drops down to about 2.5mph.

Up slopes is another thing altogether - up the steepest slopes you can expect to average about 1mph where there is a bit of scrambling involved. About 2mph for most other slopes - but that depends how often you get to walk uphill. It takes a few walks to acquire some mountain legs, and it doesn't take long to lose them as well.

Distance wise - In the lakes with a lot of ascent I wouldn't want to be walking much further than 15miles - maybe 8 to 10 miles in the winter. Long distance paths wise - anywhere between 15 and 20 miles a day for most routes. Sometimes it's a bit further to reach accommodation and the nearest watering hole. :buck2:
