Part 2 of the solstice trail began at Steeple Langford, under grey skies, where we headed up quite sharply from the village via a green track and onto Salisbury Plain. The weather was pretty unpleasant, the fine rain blowing continually in the cold wind to soak us down one side only.  Bright yellow fields of Oil Seed Rape were at least cheering to see, even if they don’t smell too pleasant. Most of the first half of the walk was in these conditions - the occasional dip in the Plain, high hedge or small area of wood brought an occasional welcome relief from the cold and wet.

We came into the pretty village of Fonthill Bishop and thankfully the rain stopped, and although the sun never really came out, the sky at least brightened while we stopped for some lunch in the charming little churchyard.

Leaving the churchyard into a field behind, the rain stayed away as we continued along footpaths and lanes passing through Hindon

and onward to another church-stop at West Knoyle.

The last part of the walk joined the Monarch Way and was largely over farmland (with lots of stiles - just what you need after 15 miles walking ::) ). The little bluebell wood was stunning and the pictures don’t really do it justice. I was too slow with the camera to snap a startled deer that headed off as we were passing.

The walk finished in the small town of Mere.
