Do you think this is part of the WW1 celebrations. After all so many generals,seemingly , could not actually read a map. According to one book they were given a huge amount more training as young officers in etiquette and horsemanship than in tactics and planning.

TBH no.  Ask any NCO and he will tell you the most dangerous thing on the battlefield is an officer with a map.
