Using Pi puts me just 17mm out on the physical measurement...
is that on the height or pole length?

Measurement between balljoint centres is 17mm out.

Pi using height gives: 2576mm
Pole length is what we are after mathematically closest to physical length...
Pi is not really relevant as we aren't dealing with a semi circle though..?
This is the grandest weight-saving exercise I've ever attempted btw
Thanks for the chart - I couldn't find one like that online...  O0

re chart:  2354mm calc - 2359mm (7 sections of 337mm) is what I made upper calculation on physical length btw, but since realised that makes for a tight fit...

Because the arms would eventually become parallel.
If you keep 'bending' a parabola you end up with a circle.
Rubbish.  The ends of a parabola tend asymptotically to two parallel lines.  The ends of a hyperbola tend asymptotically to two intersecting lines IIRC.

(10 O-levels, 5 A-levels, 2 degrees, and a Wikipedia)

should have said semi-circle, but not really important as it is a parabola or a semi-circle. Not a hyperbola.
Not sure what people's qualifications have to do with basic geometry is.

Parabola and semi circle not the same thing.  Why should the natural shape of the flexed pole not be a hyperbola though?  Just asking.  As to quals, Mick started it so I added to it for humour's sake.
3 'O' Levels and 2 GCSE's clearly not enough lol...  ::)

Then again if its shape is defined purely by the pressure on the ends it could be a catenary
y = cosh(x) = (e^x + e^-x)/2
I'll go now  ;)

I slept in my cheapo gothic arch tunnel tent last night Mick. One thing that I noticed when I was pitching it was that the pole sleeve material was suffering some wear at the peak of the arch, noticeably more than elsewhere.

The design of the fabric sections won't allow modification for just a simple hoop I take it..?
One of the best tents I had design-wise was a Lodestone Solitude by Sunncamp about £40 i think - came with a v cheap groundsheet and fibre glass pole. I bought an alu pole set for it and was that taken with it, I replaced the groundsheet with sil-nylon, tell you that stuff ain't easy to sew as it's very slippery, but I persevered) - afair, I got the weight down to around 1.2k... It was very stable and you could sit up in it ( actually can as I still have it...) - very convenient for getting dressed. Doubt I'd be able to get dressed in this one...

Unfortunately not, the cut of the fabric is for a peak. I have managed to source replacement poles, including a section with the required bend, and it will do me for a while longer. Not that I am doing much right now!

Do you remember what weight fabric it was?
I have a cheap tent and it has the same problem, I also have a sewing machine and too much time.

Sadly not, but with my track record it would be the lightest..? (don't recall it being Ripstop though...)

I have also used Pennine Outdoor in the past, but don't think they stock it anymore...
