Packable insulated jacket
« on: 08:47:12, 30/03/20 »
Hi,
I'm looking for a packable synthetic insulated jacket for the missus' birthday.

I have in mind Montane Pheonix and mountain equipment fuse jackets.
I've found both for around the £100 mark. The montane doesn't have a stuff sack, but looks maybe a bit nicer?
Any experience with these?

I have the craghoppers compresslite 3 which you can get very cheap, it's OK, but think I want to get her something better. It isn't really that amazingly warm and the outer material isnt the best.

This site has done a complete comparison test of synthetic jackets. you might find it useful?

Stuff sacks are not the be all and end all.  I am sure I am not the only one on this forum that rolls their jacket up into the hood.

Yeh I was thinking that. They help get it nice and compacted though. Can probs re use one from something else I guess

At a personal level, I've bought two synthetic jackets from Alpkit, both less than £50, one was dreadful because the inner lining material just seemed to hold onto my perspiration and I always felt damp after exertion. The other jacket is great, the inner liner does not do this but neither is or was particularly warm especially when the weather was windy. Easy to solve though, I just wear my windproof jacket over the top. This winter I've got away with, one base layer, one shirt, one Alpkit synthetic jacket, and one windproof jacket and have never been cold.

It's more to carry and shove on when we stop, not really an active layer as such. She has a warm jacket but it doesn't pack down, more of a ski type thing. It becomes a drag carrying it round.

I’m not familiar with the jackets you're talking about but I’ve just bought my daughter one of these https://www.macinasac.com/products/mac-in-a-sac-polar-womens-reversible-down-jacket?variant=12950367109143

This is the older model. The newer version is around £85. Reversible jacket. Drawback is no hood.

In the same situation and view on Craghopper jacket. I plumped for the Montane Flux jacket on an offer from Go Outdoors.

The only thing I dislike about modern jackets is that are they are often too short, personally I like the hem to finish below my bottom.

I’m not on commission but the Montane Flux is long and certainly on me covers my rear

Hi Ronin83 I think the Flux jacket is a lot warmer than the Craghopper jacket and does have a better shell than is shower proof

It doesn't cover the models rear in the video, that's why I made my comment. My Paramo Alta 2 covers my rear, that was good when I was using it.
